Setting: Nipa hut in the middle, Jungle trees at the left and right of the house, a boulder near the edge of the stage, (Jungle style) every one walks in and out of the stage while Pepito is in the middle of the hut. Introduction Narrator: A long long time ago, in the island of Mactan in Samar, there was once a tribe called Gabo. It is known for its aggressive, brave, and strong people who are protective of their customs and each other. They were all soldiers at heart and very muscular! But then there comes Pepito. (Pepito enters the stage and is being bumped by almost everyone he passes by. Pepito stays at the center of the stage, watching everyone passing by.) (Everyone walks and leaves the stage.) Narrator: He was a very different person from everyone because of his size and his inability to fight properly with a sword. (Pepito’s expression suddenly turns scared because he hears what the narrator says about him). Almost everyone in his tribe thought of him as a very weak boy. Pepito: Who’s there? (scared and looks around for the voice) That’s not true! I am not weak! Narrator: Of course you are! The name itself is very weak! Pepito? Are you kidding me? What about Abdul or Bruce? See, even your tribe mates think you’re weak, right guys? (Passers-by either give a nod in agreement or raise thumbs up.) Pepito: (moves forward the stage in confidence) I will show you! I will show ALL of you! (exits the stage) Narrator: Well, let us see in the future….(Have someone pass by the stage holding a sign that says: ‘One day…’ a-la round girl) *lights out* Pepito: Dad, dad! (comes running to the center stage, excited) Dad: (stops from planting crops and pays attention to Pepito) Yes son? Pepito: (heavily breathing) I…have decided… on what I want to be …in the future. Dad: Really? And what is that? Pepito: I… want to… be a soldier…… like you. Dad: (looking scared) ARE YOU CRAZY? Do you want to die like your grandpa and your uncles! I got lucky to survive battles I joined before to see you grow up now. I can’t lose you, son; you are the future to this farm we are handling. It is best if you be a farmer like me. Pepito: I want to be the strongest of them all! I’m going to prove it to you and to the people of our tribe that I can be a brave soldier! I want to be known throughout the WORLD! Dad: (head down, shaking his head, shoulders are down, looking disappointed) It’s horrible to be in the world of war, my son. Trust me, I saw everything when I joined a battle once – merciless killing, the deaths. That’s not the kind of life I wanted for you. (holds Pepito by the shoulder, shaking sense out of him) I want you to think about it, son. Don’t make me start planning for your funeral. *dim lights* Narrator: Hello! It’s me again. As we all know, Pepito’s dad doesn’t want Pepito to join the miserable world of war because of its utmost violence. What he didn’t tell his son is that a soldier can gain a personal enemy who can be worse than a cold-blooded killer. Tsk, tsk, tsk, so much for not telling everything, dad. Let’s skip a little to the future, so you’ll know what I mean… (Nipa hut at the left, Rice patty at the right, the dad farming at the right) Dad: *sigh* Why is there have to be so much rice to harvest?! (A man in a black robe comes in the scene, pulling a kris from his waist.) Dad: (hears footsteps) Who’s there? (turns around and feels shocked upon seeing the man in black robe) Who are you? Man: Someone from your past. I used to be your worst nightmare. (walks around the stage, kris in one hand, prepares to attack any time) Funny you’ve just decided to farm and live a peaceful life. I love the way you lie to your son. Does he know about your past? Do you remember how you took my high position from me when we were in the battle of Bulaya? Dad: (recognizes the man) Lumajon? Is that you? Man: You have guessed right! (attacks dad with a kris. But dad is able to grab a plower from somewhere and is able to evade the kris) Dad: The position was given to me! I didn’t steal it from you! The idea of this revenge is pointless! Man: It might be pointless to you, but your death in my hands is a moment I’ll remember forever! (Man tries to stab Dad with his Kris, Dad evades the Kris, Dad falls on the ground and then gets stab) Man: You took my position, I take your life. (leaves the stage) Pepito: (enters the stage running and panicking) DAD! What happened? Who did this? Dad: Who cares what happens to me (COUGH). It doesn’t matter. What matters is what happens to you since I know I will die eventually. Live a good life, son. Even if I’m not with you anymore, make me proud. Always. Pepito: I will make you proud (Dad smiles then dies peacefully; Pepito closes dad’s eyes) Pepito: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! *lights out* for the next scene End of intro Scene 2 Narrator: Tragic isn’t? Pepito did not see the immediate death of his father coming. A long period of time came when he was just quiet, reflecting on things, and deciding on what he really wants to be in the future. He later found out that the culprit for his father’s death was in fact his father’s jealous comrade from a war of the past. That made Pepito realize what his father was trying to tell him before. The danger, deaths, and treachery of war. From that moment on, Pepito has decided to follow the advice of his father. He made a complete 180 from wanting to become a soldier and faced his destiny of being a hardworking… well, farmer. For a long period of time, he did farming, and he did not even try to handle a sword… It wasn’t until the time came when his original desire of becoming a warrior was triggered by a sudden happening… *lights on* (Have someone pass by the stage with the sign ‘After 10 years…’ a-la round girl) (Pepito is found farming or plowing the soil at one side of the stage. All of a sudden, on the other side of the stage, a number of people gather around for something. They may do some blabbing or talk to each other. Excitement is in the air. Pepito sees the crowd and gets curious of what’s going on. He tries to come closer.) Pepito: (asks someone from the crowd who is closest to him) What’s the happening? Ondoy: You don’t know? - Wait a minute… Pepito is that you?! Ha-ha it’s been a long time since I saw you, do you remember me? (tries to give Pepito a hug because of excitement) Pepito: Maybe… Ondoy: I’m Ondoy! We met in a storm and I was wet and hungry and you even gave me the last of your food and some of your clothes. Pepito: Oh yeah I remember you, hi! What are you doing here? And what’s up with them? (gestures over the crowd) Ondoy: They just gave the news that the Gabo tribe leader is hiring soldiers. Pepito: Really?! That’s great news! Are you joining? Ondoy: Yeah! How about you? Pepito: (turns quiet, head down) Uh, I don’t know Ondoy… Ondoy: What - you’re not joining? Pepito: I said I don’t know, okay? (cue for the crowd to exit the stage) Ondoy: How can you not know? It’s your dream remember? You told me that when you welcomed me in your shelter during that terrible storm. It’s your DREAM, Pepito! Pepito: (considers what Ondoy said) I don’t know. I think I’ll think about it. Ondoy: Good. Maybe while you’re thinking, you can accompany me in my training. You might get inspiration from my battle moves (does some battle moves). Pepito: Sounds fine. Okay, I’ll accompany you (Pepito and Ondoy exits the stage) *lights out* for the preparation of the dummy *lights on* (Pepito and Ondoy train with the dummy. They talk while beating up the poor dummy) Pepito: So how are you these days? Ondoy: Pretty good, you? Pepito: Well, my dad died a few years back. I’m trying to recover from the happening since it might make me vulnerable. Ondoy: Well, letting go is a good sign of maturity. (two people enter the stage talking, Pepito and Ondoy overhear) Guy #1: I really need to get fit for the tribe soldier hiring. Guy #2: Yeah, me too. I have to be picked by the tribe leader so I can show people what I’m made of! (flaunts muscles) Guy #1: You bet! We don’t want to end up like Pepito who just decided to do farming after his dad’s death. He’s such a chicken. (two guys exit the stage while laughing) Ondoy: (sounds worried for Pepito) Uh, are you okay, Pepito? Pepito: (looking upset and determined) I’m going to prove them wrong! Ondoy, I’ll come with you in the hiring of soldiers! This is an opportunity for me to prove myself to others, to prove what I can do. (Ondoy just nods in agreement beside Pepito) (Pepito looks at the audience, addressing his late father) Dad, I’m really sorry for doing this, but I’m going after my dream of being a soldier… I’m still going to make you proud! (turns to Ondoy) Let’s go Ondoy! Let’s get hired as brave soldiers for our tribe! Ondoy: OK! Don’t run so fast! (Ondoy and Pepito run to the curtains) *lights out* Narrator: And so Ondoy and Pepito went to meet the leader of the Gabo tribe. Both are hoping to have the chance to prove themselves, and both are hoping to make the cut to be one of the brave soldiers. (clears throat) Let’s just hope and pray that they will make it alive. End scene Scene 3 *lights on* (Jungle place, rocks everywhere, trees everywhere, put vines hanging from place to place,) (3 guys stay in stage waiting for Agila, then Pepito and Ondoy ran into the place) Pepito: *whew* We made it! (Agila walks in the Stage with an intimidating look, gives a deadly stare at everyone and points to every single one of them) Agila: (tries to walk around as he delivers the lines) I am Agila; I am your leader in this army. I built this army to protect our tribe from invaders, and I hate weak people who think they can do so much. I have gathered all of you here today to give you a chance to be one of us. We are in need of more soldiers that we can acquire for future battles. Today, your skills are going to be tested. If you pass the test, we gladly welcome you to the Gabo Tribe Army! Now let’s get started. (Agila looks at the guys and battles each one of them while giving insults. Two or three people failed with their swordfight against Agila. When it’s Pepito’s turn, he holds the sword incompetently). Agila: Well, what do we have here? A little weakling I see? You’re a small fellow huh, do you see this stick? (gets stick from brief) This is you... (breaks the stick in half and throws to the crowd). That is what’s going to happen to you if you’re going to push through with this test. I’m now giving you the chance to live longer, boy! Don’t go digging your own grave yet! Pepito: I know what I’m doing, okay? I’m tough! Agila: Very well, then! Show me what you’ve got! (They start to battle, but Pepito fell out of balance. Agila and his army laugh.) Agila: Is that all, gummy bear? I didn’t even break a sweat! Pepito: (stands us again) I’m not through yet! YAAAH! (lunges forwards with his sword, Agila evades the attack and hits Pepito on the arm, Pepito falls again) Agila: You’re just going to get killed, and I don’t kill kids. (laughs again) (Pepito kept falling down yet he stood up) Pepito: I’m not a kid anymore! I can show you! I’ll be the greatest warrior you’ll ever have! Agila: Very impressive! I can see a lot of heart and potential in you. (helps Pepito in standing up) Very well then, welcome to the Gabo Tribe! (applause from the tribesmen is heard) (Agila tries to silence his tribesmen to accommodate the newcomers. Lapu-Lapu comes in with his two soldiers. Agila approaches Lapu-Lapu and they talk in private) Agila: (addresses his tribesmen) Today, Datu Lapu-Lapu comes to our tribe to deliver an announcement and an invitation at the same time. Let us listen to him, for this concerns our island – the island of Mactan. (steps aside to give the floor to Lapu-Lapu) Lapu-Lapu: My fellow people of Mactan, I have come here to inform you of what’s happening among the chieftains of the Visayan Islands. I’m also afraid to let you know that our most appreciated peaceful living is about to be taken from us if we’re not going to fight for it. Fleets of ships from Spain that are led by a certain Captain Ferdinand Magellan have come to our seas, and he has already made friends with Rajahs Kulambu, Siagu, and Humabon – even Datu Zula joined their gang. These Rajahs and Datu Zula agreed to turn their backs from our religion to become Christians, and they also want the people of the islands of Mactan to embrace Christianity. Agila: But, datu, that is no fair! That Spanish captain can’t just drop by our islands to make us embrace a new religion! Lapu-Lapu: That is also what I thought, Agila! I refused the offer, and now they’re going to convert me and the people of Mactan by force! I come here now to ask for the help of the Gabo tribe. Agila: Well then, (pulls out his sword and raises it) we are with you ‘till death in this fight for our rights! You have our swords! Lapu-Lapu: Thank you, my fellowmen! (pulls out his sword, too) The greatest battle of Mactan will come in two days! We must get our people prepared and ready. (battle cheer is heard from the people of Gabo tribe) *lights out* battle cheer is fading Narrator: And so the greatest battle between the people of Captain Ferdinand Magellan and Datu Lapu-Lapu is about to begin. Since Agila saw determination in the young boy, he trained Pepito until Pepito became fit for a battle. Agila also trained Pepito’s friend Ondoy. Datu Lapu-Lapu’s army also trained, until the morning came where they have to prepare for the battle itself… Good luck, soldiers. Scene 4 Jungle style Battle Horn Lapu-Lapu: The Spaniards! They are here, EVERYONE battle stations! Magellan: Well hello, Filipino monkeys, we are here to bring Christianity to the Philippines. Care to join? Lapu-Lapu: Ok, first of all, we are not monkeys, 2nd of all; we are not going to submit. At least we don’t look like dogs who don’t take a bath. (Insults being exchanged) Magellan: Well then, let’s fight to the death, shall we? Everyone fights until they die.4 people are left, Agila, Lapu-Lapu, Pepito, and Magellan. (Fight scene begins.) Pepito: Do you think you can beat me? Magellan: DUHH of course I can. (Push Pepito to the ground, Point the spear on him) Agila: CHARGE! (Agila charges to Magellan) (Magellan kills Agila) Lapu-Lapu: NOOOOO AGILA! (gets up on a rock, does battle cry) Lapu-Lapu: Lalalalalalalalala (Lapu-Lapu jumps to Magellan and kills Magellan.) Pepito: (Pepito reaches for the body of Agila) No, Agila please don’t die! Agila: It’s time for me to go, Pepito… You’ve been a very brave soldier, and I’ve witnessed it. I’m pretty sure your father is very proud of you. Lapu-Lapu: You are remembered, Agila. (closes Agila’s eyes) VICTORY is ours! (soldiers who survived yelled in reply) (Scene 6 Lapu-Lapu will throw a fiesta.) (Everyone dances around.) (Kesha “Tik Tok”) Pepito: LETS PARRRRRRRRRTYYYYYYYYYYYYY CAUSE WE WON! Scene 6 (Dim lights) (Change setting to bedroom) Pepito: Where is everyone? I killed Magellan right? You even died! Dad: What are you talking about? You are in the 21st century, kid. Do I look dead to you? Pepito: But… I remember the fights and the training and everything. Dad: Just go back to sleep, you are freaking me out. Let’s talk about this tomorrow. Pepito: Okay, Father. It was only a dream anyway. (Dim Lights, Nice music) (Morning, Rooster crows) Dad: So, tell me about your dream what you learned in your dream. Pepito: I am not weak and Pepito is not a weak name. Why did you name me Pepito? Dad: I named you after one of the greatest heroes in Philippine history, Jose Rizal our national hero. Pepito: Oh I thought it was Lapu- Lapu. Dad: But we got colonized anyway. Rizal helped stop Spanish colonization and revolted against the Spaniards through his writing. Pepito: I want to go back to sleep. I might have that dream again. Narrator: We are only given 20 minutes for this play, Pepito. You can’t have the dream again, so stop sleeping! That’s it for you, audience! Thank you for being with Pepito in one of his many adventures… in his dreams! =========================END OF PLAY==============================
