 Grades –


Academic grades are based on tests, homework and all passed in assignments.
“Sua Sponte” grades (SS, ME, NI, U) are based on Engagement, Preparation
and Conduct.
Revising work – This is an important way to learn. You may revise or re-take nearly
every assignment, quiz or test. I will average the revision with the original grade to
obtain a final grade. Any revision or retake must be completed within two weeks from
when it was passed back. The original must be passed in with the revision.
 Participating in class - Volunteering with a question or an answer regularly is a very good goal.
Participating also means listening, not only to me but also to your classmates.
 Group work – Sometimes you will work in small groups. I will change the groups regularly.
Learning to work effectively with others is an important “life skill” that we try to reinforce in
science class.
 Homework – You will have homework nearly every night. You should use your assignment
notebook. Often what we do in class involves the previous night’s homework. If you “lose” an
assignment, extras are available in the classroom. You should consider calling a classmate for the
assignment. Also, assignments will be posted on line. However, if you do not get the homework
done, you should let me know before class begins.

All homework assignments will be assessed. Some I will simply check see if they are
completed. For some I will use a 1 to 5 scoring system, which I will explain. Larger
assignments will receive a letter grade.
 Bathroom – If you need to “go”, catch my attention then go quietly.
 Being prepared for class – You must bring a pencil to class. Come to class with an open and
curious mind. Arrive on time, but if you are late come into class quietly and get settled. Be sure to
see me after class to see if you missed anything at the beginning.
 Tests and Quizzes – You will receive a review sheet that explains everything that will be on a test
or quiz. You may re-take any quiz or test. I will occasionally give a pop quiz, but they will not
count nearly as much as announced quizzes or tests. Tests will receive a letter grade.
 Notebook – You will receive a notebook in which you will keep all of your class notes and lab
notes. I will periodically check your notebooks and grade them based on completeness and
organization.
 Extra Help – If you are confused by an assignment, whether it is a homework assignment,
material covered in class, a major project, or preparation for a test; ask for clarification. I am
usually available at Help and Work. Also, just ask me and we can schedule a time that works for
both of us. Asking for help means you care about your learning and understanding.
 Remember that it is fine to call me at home if you have any questions, concerns or comments.
Calling me shows that you care. But please call before 9:00 pm. 978-256-5123.
Attached is the self-assessment you will be completing at the mid term. The checklist portion (without my
explanations) is identical to what you will receive on your end of term report card. The checklist is used to
determine your Sua Sponte grade.
