I have previously conducted short papermaking and book making programs at the library and would love to do more. At this meeting, I hope to learn more about the book arts community in Alabama (see samples of work and learn about workshops) as well as learn about sources for funding book arts workshops in my community. Douglas Baulos University of Alabama at Birmingham machinewithnoname@hotmail.com Originally from Springfield, Illinois, I received a BFA from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990. In 1993, I received an MFA from the University of New Orleans. Besides being a professor at UAB, I am also the curriculum director at Studio by the Tracks, a non-profit organization. Books, because of their exterior/interior format, as well as their sequential ordering, have been of particular interest to me. The book as an object allows the viewer to be guided through a thought process as well as evoking time and journey/text and image in an intimate fashion. "Her first memorable event upon arriving on campus was a visit to the fifth floor typographic laboratory. Shortly thereafter, she became staff medical librarian at Bryce hospital and retired from that position after 25 years as a state employee. She then relocated her extensive animal collection and herself to Gordo where she was inducted into the extended Ma'Cille House family. To her well-developed photographic interests, Kathy has added letterpress printing and now owns a printing press. It is my life. Kristy Jane From-Brown Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment kristyjane@frombrown.com I have a BFA from the University of South Alabama with my primary concentration in Printmaking and secondary concentration in Photography. I am currently working as a painter, and have a studio at the Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment 3 floor. My subject matter is primarily abstract figurative, with emphasis on anatomy. I teach at my studio and at the Huntsville Museum of Art Museum Academy. I am a self-taught bookmaker, and have recently dabbled in altered books. I am a book lover in general and am looking forward to this conference to further my inspiration in this field. Kelly Garza Baldwin Arts & Aca. Magnet School kelly.garza@mps.k12.al.us I am Kelly Garza, a Visual Arts teacher at Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet School in Montgomery, Alabama. I have been teaching 6, 7, and 8 grades for the past seven years. I graduated with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from The Atlanta College of Art. After college I worked as a web and print designer for CNN, Landor Associates, and The Southern Poverty Law Center before deciding to switch careers and enter the education field. I love finding ways to introduce projects to my students that are outside standard expectations of an art classroom. I am excited to hear knowledgeable perspectives on teaching Book Arts. In past experiments with Book Art lessons my primary issues have been balancing time management with in-depth concepts and high expectations of use of materials. In other words, I have had a hard time getting quality results without using an excessive amount of class time. Billie F. Goodloe bgoodloe@comcast.net Kimberly Hart Greengate School krh566@gmail.com I am a teacher at Greengate school, a school for dyslexic children from 1st 8th grade, in Huntsville. I have been interested in book art for the last seven years; however, not until after I took a class at Penland did I start incorporating book arts into my curriculum. I've taught simple book making to my classes for the last two years. Sharron Hollice 1405 30th St. ENS Sha_Hol@yahoo.com Glenn House Sr. Studio 150 ghousesr@nctv.com Glenn House, Sr., was a high school cheerleader, a US Army paratrooper during the Korean "police action," a freelance commercial artist then a salaried commercial artist, and, finally, a teacher of book arts. He gave up gainful employment in 1991 and relocated his extensive animal collection and himself back to his beloved childhood environment in the backwoods of rural Gordo where he hoped to become a mobile-home dwelling redneck recluse. Fate, apparently, had other plans. Martha Huie mhdot@aol.com I am a retired art educator with longtime interest in handmade books, especially those incorporating text and/or literary (story) associations. Neither my teaching experience (primarily community college level) nor practical studio experience ever centered seriously on making books, and I have had no specific book arts training beyond one papermaking course (Memphis Art College) and a marbling class (John C. Campbell Folk School), both several years ago. Meanwhile, I have enjoyed experimenting with do-it-myself projects in a limited way and am looking forward to this workshop as my chance to learn more – and for inspiration. I will be teaching folded page book art at our Overdrive Digital Book Mobile program this Friday. I will report back to you with the response. I am working on a National Poetry Month Young Adult exhibit called Pics, Poetry & Paper. I acquired a degree in Art from the University of Alabama, while raising 3 children, and working as an Art Teacher at Holy Spirit Catholic School. Teaching over 300 K-12 students each year has helped me see the importance of mastering the fundamentals by breaking down the artistic process into line, shape, form, color and texture, then offer creative adventures for my students to express themselves using many diverse mediums and principles of design. Being an art teacher has allowed me to work in many mediums: drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpture, ceramics and photography. I would love to include book making among these.
