J UN E 2010 39 PROUD YE ARS OF FISHING TRADITION PRESIDENT ~ ED MARR H ello Bassmasters, Welcome to Summer in San Diego!! It is a time for picnics, ball games, beach parties, enjoying family and friends and THE TOP SIX TOURNAMENT. On June 12th, our TOP SIX TEAM (KEITH CLOWARD, BUD BRANT, JIM DAVIS, JEFF CARPENTER, LARRY WARD AND ED BYRD) will represent us with honor and courage. I say courage because that is what they will need to go back out to Lake Hodges-not what I call a fun lake to fish these days. GREG GARDNER probably does not share that sentiment and I congratulate him on his first place win and to all others who were able to catch fish there last week. With our club running the TOP SIX TOURNAMENT this year, I am placing a "All hands on deck" call to support our club and to please volunteer to help out. We will need every able-bodied Bassmasters to be there so please mark your calendars. HAROLD STEPHENS is coordinating the event and has been busy with pre-organizing so all we will have to do is show up and do our assigned jobs. It is a good time too. We will have a sign up sheet at the June meeting and anyone that volunteers will be at the top of my new best friend list. See you at the meeting. VICE PRESIDENT ~ TERRY CHENOWTH W e are fishing this month’s tournament out of Fisher’s Landing on the Lower Colorado River. So I would like to begin with a few thoughts on safety. This will be our first tournament this year where the temperatures will most likely be over a hundred degrees. So make sure you keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty of liquids, water and Gatorade and less of soda and alcohol while on the water. Running the river no matter what the water level is can be dangerous. Keep an eye out for sand bars and rocks while running. The water level fluctuates the constantly, day by day and hour by hour. Just because you made it through an area the day before or even that morning doesn’t mean it’s clear to now. So keep an eye out. The program at Junes meeting will be a question and answer format. Since we are going to the river we have selected four of our more experienced river anglers to be the panel. They are Dave Mack, Ed Byrd, Randy Kreiser and Ed Marr. If you have questions on fishing the river this would be the perfect time to get them answered. We have two events to participate in this month. First the San Diego Council of Bass Clubs Top Six Tournament is June 12th. We are the host club. Some of us have already been volunteered to specific duties for the day, but the rest of us will need to be there to help with the set up and the clean up. Harold Stephens is heading this huge task up and I am sure will have some more to discuss at the meeting. Saturday June 26th is our annual picnic. Greg and Zoe Gardner passed around a sign up at last meeting and will have it going around at this meeting. Get on the list; pick a side dish to bring. The location this year is El Monte Park. There will be the casting contest, the washer toss game and kids activities. Bring out the family and friends. It’s a fun day. If you are a new to the club and have never been it’s time to start. Long time Bassmasters that haven’t been in a while, it’s time to get back out. Also prospective members are also welcome. See you on the water.. REMEMBER…HODGES IS OFF LIMITS JUNE 7 - 12 SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 2 JUNE 2010 TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN ~ Keith “Sandbar” Cloward hat the heck happen to Lake Hodges, That’s all I’m going to say about that. We had 42 anglers and 42 fish caught; unfortunately not every caught a fish. If you did, you got points. If you didn’t al least you got 2 points. The man on a mission Greg Gardner figured it out by jerking all of his fish to come up with another 1st place finish with 4 fish going 13.97 and a 4.18 for big fish. Another name we’re getting used to and new point leader Josh Rhodes had the only limit that went 12.22lbs and took second (and he culled a fish). One of the new members Spencer ‘Egg McMuffin” Davidson was on Josh’s’ boat and grabbed third with 4 fish going 6.57 (first piece of hardware). Great job guys. River, River, River... June 18,19. Launch out of fishers landing and weigh-ins at or near gazebo. Need to have river stamp (dugh!).Need to have lights on your boat actually on when we meet in Fishers. 5 fish, 13” limit, weight in at 3pm. Pretournament meeting is at Dave Mack’s rental house on Thursday June 17 at 530pm. We need a volunteer to head a BBQ there. Contact me. Results of tourney will be announced in front of MACs house on Sat around 4:30. I thought the weigh in went especially well at Hodges, considering. Results went fast, People used the and filled the JOSE RHODES (2ND ); GREG GARDNER (1ST); weigh in bags just as had hoped. If you have a large fish say at or SPENCER DAVIDSON (3RD) near 5 pounds you can use your own weigh in bag for only that one fish, you still need to have other fish in official weigh bag from the club. We have a new program on the club computer that will aid in the second day weigh in and tallying procedure. Top 6, June 12, Hodges, great another opportunity to fish that lake. OFF LIMITS JUNE 7 TO JUNE 12. No exceptions, if you fish it we get DQed. Ask me. I know from previous experience. W See You on the Water… FABULOUS FRANK A guy walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He gets into the taxi, and the Cabbie says, 'Perfect timing. You're just like Frank.' Passenger: 'Who?' Cabbie: 'Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank Feldman every single time.' Passenger: 'There are always a few clouds over everybody.' Cabbie: 'Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the tennis Grand-Slam. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone, danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.' Passenger: 'Sounds like he was something really special.' Cabbie: 'There's more... He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman, he could do everything right' Passenger: 'Wow, some guy then.' Cabbie: 'He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back, even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too - He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman.' Passenger: 'An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?' Cabbie: 'Well, I never actually met Frank.....he died. I married his widow.' SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 3 JUNE 2010 TREASURER ~ FRANK NEUGEBAUER I hope you are all taking care of your tired muscles from reeling in all those Hodges lunkers that were caught during our tournament. Lake Hodges used to be my favorite lake. Unfortunately for me and many others the Lake Hodges I knew was not the Lake Hodges we went to for our tournament. Difficult is not a strong enough word to describe the fishing when we were there. There is tough, and now there is Hodges Tough. Congratulations to Greg Gardner on the win. Greg is the personification of grit and determination. That is what it took to win the tournament and take the win away from Josh Rhodes who finished second with the only five fish limit. When you put forty-four anglers on the water with the talent that exists in the members of this club, you know fishing is Hodges Tough. Spencer Davison rounded out the top three. Congratulations to the top three and anyone that caught a fish. I would also like to recognize Marshall Martin who fished with me at Lake Hodges. Marshall was actually throwing the bait that seemed to be getting the fish for most people. Marshall threw that bait all day long without ever giving up or complaining. It was the first time I fished with Marshall and I really enjoyed the day. It could only have been better if we had at least had a bite. The excitement for the day was when Marshall must have hooked a carp and had it on for just a moment. It was hard to believe we had gone so long without a bite but the great big scale with a little touch of brown on the edge that came back on his hook confirmed we were still on our pattern. The club is doing well financially. The current checking account balance is $5,034.16. The club was cash flow positive in the month of May for $1,313.52. We are on track to add $1,694.16 to the 40th anniversary banquet. Lastly, please participate in the raffle and buy the San Diego Bassmaster gear we have. There are a lot of new guys coming into the club and I really hope they purchase some of the clothing we sell. You belong to the best bass club in San Diego. Be proud to show your colors. Stu Kenson was wearing his colors at Otay this weekend. Looking good Stu. Looking forward to seeing everybody at the river… SAN DIEGO BASSMASTER WEAR SHORT SLEEVE T-SHIRTS: Large and XL: $20 XXL: $22 LONG SLEEVE T-SHIRTS: Large and XL: $25 XXL: $27 XXXL: $28 JACKETS: XL: $62 XXL: $65 Alligators While sports fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft. Spotting an old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted, "Are there any gators around here?!" "Naw," the man hollered back, "they ain't been around for years!" "Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore. About halfway there, he asked the guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?" "We didn't do nothin'," the beachcomber said. "The sharks got 'em." SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 4 JUNE 2010 MEMBERSHIP ~ MIKE LUPO Hello San Diego Basmaster's; Welcome to the month of June's Membership News Letter. With our last month meeting now well behind us there are some new changes in our membership! We now have ten members at large & frothy- nine full members. In our last tournament the board voted to allow Sonney Hale to tournament pre-fish with an up or down vote to become a full member at our June meeting. The board also voted to allow Tim Hiliker to pre-fish our last tournament, & he'll be in the first procession to join our club when an opening occurs. Then with a pleasant surprise we a new prospective member by the name of Don Webber fill out our application to join our club. With our club membership news now covered, I'd like to introduce you to this month’s "Spot Light on a Member" Vicki Becker. Member Spotlight May's 2010 selected fishing fanatic is Vicki Becker. Hold on to your rods for this one kids!!! Vicki was born and raised in Waukegan Illinois to a Navy Family. (And all this time I thought Illinois was in the middle of the map!? Are you sure it's just not the government looking for prime real estate???) Vicki and her family moved to San Diego in 1972 and made their home in El Cajon. She would then flip-flop (like many of those things she catches which she claims to be fish) between Santee and El Cajon; and if you thought she was the only little minnow in the Navy family of Illinois you would be wrong. Vicki has a two guppy sisters and one big b-ass brother ;). Guess who was and still is the Boss? Now for the down and dirty of it all, the nitty gritty, the in depth Q & A, the answers to all of life's questions, the.... well, you get the picture... And the winning lotto numbers are ;) Oops, wrong answers! Let's get to know Vicki and what makes her rod crank! #1 Mike: Where is your favorite place to fish and why? Vicki: Lake Havasu, because of its diversity. It can't compare to any other fishery that we fish as a club or as a private member. I love the beauty, the views, and the fishing is tops. #2 Mike: What do you like to fish with and why? Vicki: Crank Baits- I just love it when you bump a twig, a rock pile or a log and then they just slam it! I'd compare it to top water fishing under water! #3 Mike: How do you feel about being the Back Seater? Vicki: I get to concentrate on my fishing without worrying about the boat & trying not to back seat the back seater. Plus I don't have the pressure of being the boater. Mike: Besides, I think most women belong in the back seat don't all of you.... Just kidding! Don't go getting those lines in a knot!!! #4 Mike: What's Bad about be the Back Seater? Vicki: Knowing where to fish after a good pre-fish & then not being able to relay this to my boater. Mike: Men, they never listen!!!! #5 Mike: Ok then, what do you do when this predicament show's it's ugly snakehead? Vicki: If I'm not getting bit I change up my technique until I find something that will put a fish in the boat. #6 Mike: What's difficult about fishing a two-day tournament? Vicki: On a two-day tournament I sometime just like to hang out with the girls and grab a day at the Spa! Another thing that tears my ass is when I haven't figure out why I haven't been able to put two good days together when we fish these tournaments! #7 Mike: Vicki how about a Safety Tip! Vicki: The thing I see the most is Boater's who forget or refuse to hook up the their Kill Switch... -Michael!!! #8 Mike: What drew you to fishing? Boy's?! Vicki: No! I use to have a couple of friends that would take me fishing, but we would never catch anything. After a long time of fishing with them I finally caught a fish and it was a six-pound large mouth! After that day I was hooked forever. Later, I was invited to join this club and I had to jump on it like a large mouthed bass on a shiny new crank bait!!! # 9 Mike: What's Best about being a member of this Club? Vicki: Being On Top (Sorry That's a Private Joke)! I love this club, I love the competition, but most of all the life long friends I've made; I love them all!!! #10 Mike: How many years have you been in our Club? Vicki: Over ten years & I'll be a Lifer for sure! I just wanted to say thank you for given me your time on Sunday, to answer these questions. So for those who don't know you that well... Read her damn answers!!! I think you are the Bomb Vicki Becker, and I know that EVERYONE will agree or you will kick their ASS!!! SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 5 JUNE 2010 San Diego Bassmasters General Meeting Minutes May 4, 2010 President Ed Marr called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Jim Davis moved, Joe DeSalvo seconded to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Membership Director Mike Lupo introduced the Board, pronouncing most, if not all, of the Board Members last names correctly. Mike also introduced prospective members Sonny Hale and Tim Hilliker and guests Bob Weber, Regina Seaberg, and Jen Rosner.Mike reported that Dave Seaberg has requested to change status to "Member at Large", opening up a position on the roster. Sonny Hale is first on the list to fill that position. Ed Marr will pre-fish Sonny; Mike Lupo will pre-fish Tim Hilliker, who is second on the list. Ed Marr congratulated Darryl Crippen on becoming a grandfather of an 8 pounder, a male, a keeper. Ed also provided letters & stamped envelopes to the Arizona State Parks, requesting Lake Alamo stay open, for each Club member to sign.Ed brought up the issue of dead fish at the docks on the Saturday morning of our Lake Havasu tournament. While the percentage of fish experiencing post-release mortality was within the usual boundaries (which is a very small percentage), because we caught so many fish there were between 15 & 20 dead ones. This was upsetting to various parties. The Club will take steps to reduce post-release fish mortality. Terry Chenowth reported the Donnalea Brandt won the Family Tournament. Mike Lupo's son Mark caught the big fish, a 7.0 pounder, right at the launch. Thanks to Lee Chapman and John Schwartz for heading up the event. Zoe Gardner spoke about the Picnic, set for June 26 at El Monte Park. It will start at 10am. The Club will provide main dish. Please bring a side dish and beverages. Jim Putney volunteered to ferry the Club BBQ grill to the Picnic. Dave Mack is coordinating a night at the Padres. It will be July 17, vs. the Diamondbacks, and will be ball cap night. Terry again requested more pictures, with locations and descriptions, for the end of the year Banquet photo show. Patrick Tryon announced that he and Spencer Davidson have started a business selling proprietary, specially formulated boat cleaning supplies. There are multiple products. One can even clean very old Squid blood off of a driveway. To promote the business, they are going to give away a $40-50,000 bass boat! Visit www.boatdacious.com (spell that one right, people!) or talk to Patrick or Spencer. By the way, Mike Lupo has tried the products and raves about them! Jim Putney, on behalf of the SD Bass Council, told about changes to the SD Bass Council tournaments. They plan to eliminate the night tournaments and replace them with a series of Sunday day tourneys with straight pay, straight weight, $150 entry fees. The schedule is still being worked out, pending approval of the City Lakes personnel. See the Bass Council website or www.SDFish.com for details and new news. Also, on May 22nd, the kids program at Lake Murray will happen. Murray staff is looking for volunteers to help kids learn how to fish. June 12 will be the Top Six tournament, headed up by Harold. Volunteers much appreciated. Tournament Director Keith Cloward passed out trophies for Havasu. Ed Marr took 3rd with 29.53 pounds. Ed & Janice fished together, including Ed's favorite reef, where no fish lived that day. They then pre-fished up river, but didn't catch much. Same thing lower, at Sand Point and the Billy Williams River. But, on Friday, Ed homed in a 4 pounder and offered temporary relocation services. The bass accepted. By this time, Ed's favorite reef had reloaded. Then they picked away at the "boxes". The two biggest fish came just south of Windsor in about 20 feet. On Saturday the reef was empty, but enough bass hit to put over 12 pounds in the bag. Second placer Terry Chenowth also got big fish, with a 4.92, despite boat troubles including a hole in the block. His warranty had expired in February. Terry and Vickie had Friday limits and were culling by 9am casting to the docks. (Continued Page 6) SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 6 JUNE 2010 General Meeting Minutes (Continued) On Saturday Terry had 5 bites and 5 fish by 9:30. On both days bed fish were everywhere. Greg Gardner was in second on the first day and first on the second with a 33.40. Greg and Zoé would normally burn all kinds of gas up and down river, but this time they stayed within a mile of the launch. His best smallie, a 4.19, came on a jerkbait off a point. Said Greg, "he jumped about [3 feet] high and just lit me up." Keith explained the new weigh-in procedure, including the use of Club weigh bags with a "minimum" water level line and the use of multiple bags when there are large fish. Bags will be given out first come, first serve, at the weigh in table. Anyone bringing fish to the weigh table that aren't in the official bags will have to go back and put their fish into the official bag. Each boater will get a boat number and that's the order they should weigh in. Boater and nonboater should weigh together. Joe & Bud are bringing desert next month. No new business was brought to the table. In old business, Doris repeated that she needs Fish Tales and Mystery fisherman pictures. Ed Marr adjourned the meeting at 8:50pm. Respectfully submitted, Curt Nelson, Secretary FISH TALES ~ DORIS COOK A SHOWER FOR THE EAST BABY BOY! Several of the Bassmaster women attended a baby shower for Joyce East on Saturday, May 22. It was lots of fun and you should have seen us sniffing disposable diapers to try to identify the baby food flavors in them. Thankfully it was real baby food, but guess some of us had been away from that for too long. Cheryl Byrd and I won the contest to unroll enough toilet paper to reach around Joyce’s stomach. That baby boy to be is going to be one best-dressed baby. He even has a bodysuit with the Bass Pro Shop emblem on it. This kid is doomed to be a fisherman! On the way to the shower in Imperial Beach in Vicki’s new car, we were stopped at a stoplight when the car was moving back and forth. We were wondering what was going on when someone noticed the beads hanging from Vicki’s rear view mirror shaking and said we were having an earthquake. Seconds later Vicki got an e-mail from Terry saying we just had an earthquake. More fun! THE TOP SIX! Harold Stephens is busy getting everything on order and in place for the Top 6 to be held at Lake Hodges on June 12th. He will need some volunteers to assist him, so be ready to step up and lend a hand when you are needed. HAPPY BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES! Cody Billock starts off the June birthdays on June 2 nd with Keith Cloward next on June 3rd. Stu Kenson on June 7th, followed by Ed Byrd on June 22nd. Greg and Zoé Gardner will be chairing the picnic on their 11 th wedding anniversary with Jim and Pam Davis reaching the 37 year mark on June 29 th. Congratulations and best wishes to all of you. (Continued Page 7) SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS 7 JUNE 2010 FISH TALES (CONTINUED) SDBC DAY TOURNAMENT #1 San Diego Council of Bass Clubs held their first tournament in the new Kevin Mineo Memorial Day Tournament Series on Sunday, May 23rd at Otay Lake. It was a blustery, cold, miserable day, but there were 11 brave teams and one lone fisherman who braved the elements. Our two SD Bassmasters teams who participated did very well. First place went to Josh Rhodes and his partner Ryan Escutia for a limit weighing 11.6 pounds to collect $360.00. Stu and Shirley Kenson had the heaviest stringer in the Guy/Gal category with three bass at 4.1 pounds. They took home the $100 guarantee for their efforts. It was great to see Dennis Kolendar and his partner take third place and big fish honors with a 4.4 pounder and total of 6.9 pounds for their two bass. It was nice to hear that he has moved back to San Diego. Jim and I were going to fish it, but Jim hadn’t been feeling well the past few days and we were afraid for him to get out in the cold, so we just donated our entry fee. We were hoping that we would have more participation from our club, but maybe next time on June 20th at Hodges MYSTERY FISHERMAN! This is the second month that I have not received a photo for the young Mystery Fisherman contest, which leads to believe there is no more interest in pursuing this. Should you care to contribute a photo or any news items send them to mscooker@cox.net. THE WINNERS AT HODGES
