COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Course Disclosure Terri Sanders Phone: 586-2820 E-Mail: terri.sanders@ironmail.org COURSE DESCRIPTION Computer literacy is a foundational element of success in today’s technology-driven world. This course is intended to help students learn concepts associated with key application software, basic computing fundamentals, and ethics and appropriate behavior while using technology as a tool in the classroom and in life. This course is aligned with national and international standards and the Utah Core to prepare students across multiple levels of skills. OBJECTIVE/GVC (Guaranteed Viable Curriculum) 1. Students will be introduced to and be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of computer technology: what types of technology exist, how types of technology function, what component parts work with specific technologies. 2. Students will understand and effectively use the common program functions with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. 3. Students will understand and be able to effectively use and navigate networks and the internet. 4. Students will use multiple processes of communication. They will understand what appropriate means of communication is most beneficial for a given task’s purpose and audience. 5. Students will use their document processing, spreadsheet, and/or electronic presentation skills to complete a cross curricular project during the semester in which they are enrolled in the Computer Technology course. CREDIT/GRADING .25 Credits are earned each term for a maximum of .50 for the semester. REQUIREMENT / RESPONSIBILITIES – All Assignments are on my Class Website. I. Each student will be given access to the computers. Passwords are to be kept confidential in order to ensure that student’s work is not lost or tampered with. Inappropriate conduct or behavior on the computers will result in loss of computer privileges. II. No student will be given access to the INTERNET without having first completed the Acceptable Use Policy of the Iron County School District. III. Each student is expected to contribute to a quiet and productive classroom atmosphere, respect the property of others, participate in and listen to class discussions, turn in assigned work and tests on time, and show cooperation and understanding in working with his/her fellow students and the instructor. IV. Students are expected to be on task until all work is complete. Students should not be using the internet for activities that are not related to the assignment (playing games, messenger, chat rooms, etc), without permission of the instructor. First offense-warning, second offense-loss of privileges for a one-week period, third offense-internet privileges will be suspended for the remainder of the semester. V. Each student is expected to bring with him/her all materials necessary for class participation such as: pens, pencils, books, paper, etc. VI. No food or drinks, and/or candy will be allowed in classroom. VII. Cell phones are NOT to be used during class time. First offense-verbal warning, second offense-phone taken until end of school day, third offense-phone taken to the office. ASSIGNMENTS Assignments are to be handed in on the day they are due. If a student has a school excused or home excused absence, the assignment must be made up within one week. After the one-week make-up period, the student will not receive credit for the assignment. It is the student’s responsibility to get the necessary make-up work from the instructor. If the student has an unexcused absence, the assignment cannot be made up. Special arrangements can be made with the instructor for extra help during the lunch hour or after school. Assignments will be graded on both the Basic Point System and the Mastery Learning System. TESTS Tests will be given following each unit. The State Competency Exam and MOS Test (Microsoft Office Specialist Industry Certification) will be given at the end of the semester. Both exams will count towards the student’s final grade and failure to come to class and take the exams will result in zero points. BELLWORK/QUIZZES Bellwork and/or quizzes will be given each day as a review of previous work or introduction of new units. Students that are tardy will NOT be allowed to make up bellwork and/or quizzes. PARTICIPATION Students will be given weekly points for being in attendance and being on task during classroom time. FINES Any student found destroying or tampering with equipment of any kind in the classroom will be subject to paying repair or replacement costs.
