CALL FOR SCULPTURE Downtowns and main streets all over the country have been rotating major artworks in and out of the public eye to attract visitors, energize streetscapes, and create great public gathering places. Commonly referred to as sculpture or art on the street programs, Havana's street sculpture project will bring the business community and the arts together for a common cause. About the Sculpture Exhibition & Competition - Second Year The City of Aurora Art in Public Places Program and the Havana Business Improvement District are looking for existing outdoor sculpture to be considered for a sculpture exhibition on Havana Street. The Exhibit Art Selection Panel has selected 10 potential sites to display sculpture for one year. The ideal installation timeline is October 2012. This exhibit is part of the collaboration between the City of Aurora Art in Public Places Program and the Havana Business Improvement District. "The Havana Business Improvement District is very excited to be partnering with the City of Aurora's Arts in Public Places Commission on this sculpture art street project. The business owners feel this project will go a long way to create a sense of place and serve as another important economic development tool for On Havana Street and the City of Aurora." – Gayle Jetchick, Executive Director - Havana Business Improvement District Sculpture Purchase, Artist Stipends and Cash Awards Exhibiting artists will be paid a $1,000 stipend for the transportation and installation of their artwork. The Aurora Art in Public Places Program may purchase sculpture from the exhibit that will be added to the City’s public art collection. The Havana Business Improvement District is providing funding for cash awards in the following amounts: People’s Choice: $1,000 1st Place: $750 2nd Place: $500 3rd Place: $250 Eligibility For ease of delivery, visual artists residing in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas are invited to apply. Sculpture must be able to be exhibited for the full length of the exhibit per the Exhibit Loan Agreement. Sculpture must be ready for exhibition and fulfill the selection and design criteria. 1 CALL FOR SCULPTURE Selection Criteria Quality of sculpture submitted Outdoor suitability and durability Size and subject matter -2 (6’x6x1’6” pedestals) with 14’ maximum sculpture height and 8 (3’x3’x2’ pedestals) with 8’ maximum sculpture height Public safety concerns Design Criteria Three dimensional freestanding sculpture of any medium suitable for outdoor placement No larger than 2 tons or 14’ high (6’x6’x1’6”pedestal) and 8’ high (3’x3’x2’ pedestal) For public safety reasons, the artwork should not have sharp objects or edges. The artwork will be outside and exposed to the elements. It must be able to withstand the changing weather conditions of Colorado. Materials used must be durable, require little maintenance, and be graffiti resistant. Installation Requirements Artists must transport and install their own artwork. A $1,000 stipend will be provided. All sculptures must be attached to a steel plate that will be bolted or welded to a concrete base or sidewalk, unless other design considerations are more appropriate. All selected artists must submit a plan (drawing) for the installation of their artwork, and if necessary, include any engineering and other significant factors affecting the installation. Digital images: You may submit up to 2 sculptures to be considered. You will be required to submit a minimum of 2 digital images (one front and one back) for each sculpture for a total of 4 digital images. Image list: The image list must correspond to the name of the jpeg, i.e., # - Last Name. Information must include title, media, dimensions, weight, and sale price. NO HARD COPY SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. More than 335,000 residents choose to live in Aurora making it the third largest city in Colorado and the 56th largest in the United States. 3 CALL FOR SCULPTURE Legal Comments The Exhibit Art Selection Panel and the City of Aurora Art in Public Places Commission reserve the right to reject any or all applications, proposals, applicants, or projects, and to modify or terminate the application process or the selection process for any reason and without prior notice. The City of Aurora shall provide insurance during the exhibition. City of Aurora shall not be liable for any loss incurred due to the failure of the connection between the steel plate and the artwork. Submission of entry constitutes agreement of conditions set forth. A lease agreement for exhibiting artwork will be executed after notification of acceptance has been made. 4
