THE DOOR: A door is a recurring image seen and referred to in each of the nights. Constructed as a wooden doorframe which can easily be brought out as part of the set, this doorway symbolizes Jesus. ("I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. John 10:9) NIGHT 1 PROPS: Apple or other fruit Flaming Swords SET: Black curtain covers set during creation scene. After creation, lower curtain to reveal backdrop painted as a beautiful garden: lush greens, brightly colored flowers, animals, a river. The Tree of Life could either be painted onto the backdrop, or use an actual tree, or a fake constructed tree. The Door can be placed to the side, or brought out by stagehands toward the end of the evening. COSTUMES: Narrator & Moses: Adam & Eve: Satan: Biblical robes Flesh-colored bathing suits and/or shorts/shirt Leaves Animal skins Option 1: sock puppet Option 2: actor with full body suit, hood for head ACTOR NOTES: Satan should be played by someone who has full range of movement, and can “slither.” SOUND EFFECTS: None. NIGHT 2 PROPS: Basket of fruit (Cain’s offering) Lamb or stuffed animal (Abel’s offering) Knife Building materials (hammer, boards, saw, etc.) Burlap bag with sticks (Isaac carries) SET: Cain and Able scene: Background flats painted as a countryside. Set change to… Noah’s Ark scene: Change backdrop to show part of the ark. (Could just bring out a partial layer painted and cut in the shape of the front of the ark and place in front of existing countryside backdrops.) The Door should be positioned as the door to the ark. COSTUMES: Narrator & Moses: Biblical robes Cain & Abel: Loin clothes with sash (similar to caveman clothes) Abraham, Sarai, Isaac: Traditional Biblical robes SOUND EFFECTS: Construction sounds (hammers, sawing, etc.) Rain, thunder (Lightning…light flashes) Sheep or ram sounds (baa-ing) NIGHT 3 PROPS: Basket large enough for a baby Baby (doll?) Staff Red removable “paint” for door post Hyssop/sage brush to paint with Bronze snake Stone tablets SET: Set #1: River’s edge with reeds and cattails, Egyptian buildings in the background, the doorframe off to the side. Set #2: Desert scene COSTUMES: Biblical robes for all except Princess and her servants. Princess should be dressed very finely, with white flowing draping dress, gold sash and trim, gold hair pieces. She should have black, straight hair in the Egyptian fashion, and heavy black eye make up. SOUND EFFECTS: Frogs Gnats buzzing Flies (louder buzzing) Livestock sounds (sheep, cows, etc.) Hail falling Wailing NIGHT 4 PROPS: Palm (or other) leaves to give to audience Donkey for Jesus to ride into town Pottery crock for water Baby (or doll) SET: Set #1: Front of temple, steps leading up Set #2: Outdoor scene, outskirts of town. Road leading into town, water well to one side COSTUMES: Biblical robes for all except John the Baptist, who is dressed in tattered loin cloth and sash, dirtier than the others, disheveled. SOUND EFFECTS: None. NIGHT 5 PROPS: None. SET: Set #1: Upper Room: simple room scene, windows, walls, a curtain Set #2: Garden of Gethsemane at night: olive trees, Wall of Jerusalem in the background. Set #3: Drop the backdrops to reveal the cross set into the ground behind the stage. (Optional: 3 crosses, with thieves) Crucifixion scene: Option 1: Act out the crucifixion, complete with nailing the nails. Lift up the cross with Jesus on it. Option 2: Begin the crucifixion scene with Jesus already up on the cross. COSTUMES: Disciples/All Else: Jesus: Roman Soldier: Biblical robes Biblical robes, loin cloth and crown of thorns for crucifixion Breastplate, leather short skirt-like bottom, helmet, strappy sandles ACTOR NOTE: Could have two actors play Jesus: one for the early scenes, and another for the crucifixion scene. This would help with timing and placement of actors. SOUND EFFECTS: Very loud hammer-on-nail sound during crucifixion Thunder crash NIGHT 6 PROPS: Scrolls (2) SET: Minimal backdrop.
