German 1 with Frau Gottschild Contact: Kim Gottschild kgottsch@ccs.k12.in.us Teacher web page: http://myccs.ccs.k12.in.us/teachers/kgottsch/ Homework: Homework assignments are a chance for the students to practice the language at home and give students an idea of what to expect on assessments. Direct feedback is critical when learning a language, however, which is why self-grading, online homework assignments are assigned. Homework keys are provided for non-self-grading assignments. Homework assignments are always listed on the bulletin board and on the teacher website. Homework completion is built in daily study time, and level of effort will be reflected in the weekly assessment grade. THERE IS NO HOMEWORK GRADE. Students who turn in their completed homework prior to the quiz and core below 73% will be permitted to retake the weekly quiz. Projects: 10-15% of Grade One or two individual projects, such as creating a family tree or a menu, will be assigned per quarter. Assessment: 85% - 90% of grade While students are formatively assessed on a daily basis, receiving ample feedback for their work in class, students will be summatively assessed weekly (generally FRIDAYS) in two ways: Standard Quizzes and Tests Multiple choice, matching, true false type tests will prepare the student for the high school placement exam. These types of tests are also good training for college placement exams. Performance-based Quizzes and Tests These will show teacher, parent, and the student exactly what the student is capable of producing on his/her own in the target language. Real world based activities and projects, both written and spoken, will engage the student and allow them the opportunity to think outside the box. Study Habits: Color coded flashcards should be made for each chapter and are an excellent study tool, allowing parents to share in the German learning experience and support their student. Notes taken in class, kept in the student’s binder, are an excellent study tool and allow parents direct insight as to what their student is learning in class. Notes should be used to study for quizzes and tests. Notes are also available on my teacher website. Foldables will be created during class to be used as study tools Daily study is invaluable, as well as consistent review during the nine week break! The journals and flashcards serve this purpose. Resources: Online dictionary: www.leo.org If your student is absent: All of the notes and homework activities, as well as many of the supplemental videos we do in class, can be found on my teacher website. Your student can get caught up by watching the videos, taking the notes, and completing the homework assignment within two days of your absence. It is best, however, to make up the work the day of the absence to make the return to class easier! Expectations: FISH! Vielen Dank for supporting your student’s language learning experience!
