Macintosh Active Directory & Windows Integration Course
Overview
This course has been written to give people a practical introduction to Macintosh Support and
Troubleshooting in a real-world commercial or educational setting in a cost-effective manner.
Aims
This course aims to give a thorough grounding in Apple technologies, with the aim of enabling the
delegate to return to their employer armed with practical knowledge to successfully Support and
troubleshoot Macintosh computers.
Teaching
The course utilises leader-led presentations covering theory, followed by practical work to help cement
this knowledge. With over half the time being spent with hands-on exercises, this leaves the delegate
with a solid understanding of Macintosh support.
This course is unique in that it covers Hardware, Software, Networking and Operating System in a
single integrated course, and has been written to teach people what they need to know, rather than
what a manufacturer wants them to know.
The Trainers
The course is run by practising engineers from the support arm of our company who bring along their
up-to-date experience of the best methods, hints, tips and tricks needed to successfully and efficiently
support Macs. They are approachable, frank and honest in passing on their experience in a refreshing
“warts-and-all” type approach that leaves the delegates better prepared to apply their skills.
Relevant
At the beginning of the course, Delegates will be encouraged to discuss any issues they currently have,
which forms the basis of an “Open Forum” at the end of the course where “off-topic” issues can be
researched by the trainer and discussed. This degree of customisation of the final part of the course is
what makes this course so popular and relevant.
Course Details
Day 1
The course starts with an overview of Apple Technologies and their differences and similarities
with current industry standards. This is followed by an explanation of Apple Hardware and a
take-apart and upgrade exercise.
We then explain the structure of OS X, versions and its functionality and compatibility with
hardware & software legacy products, (PPC, OS9 and Rosetta) followed by carrying out a clean
format of a drive and install of an OS. We explain the multi-user environment and permissions
control.
Day 2
We investigate the Boot sequence, common faults and diagnostic tools such as Verbose and
Single-User mode and explore System Logs and the Console.
Installing and removing Applications, the various Libraries and Preference management, Fonts
and viruses.
Introduction to the command-line, and low-level diagnostic tools.
Device drivers, Kexts, Shims and Printers and the issues they can cause.
CoreServices, SuperUser and “background” utilities.
Day 3
We look at Networking both a in a pure-Mac environment and how Mac’s integrate in a
Windows or enterprise network. This is followed by an explanation of Authentication,
permissions and authorisation and a demonstration of Active Directory integration.
We finish with an explanation of the built-in and external diagnostic tools available for Macs.
This is then followed by a series of practical troubleshooting exercises where the delegates can
pull together the knowledge of the previous 2.5 days and stretch their skills.
Each exercise is designed to highlight and reinforce the tools and techniques taught, and leaves
the delegate confident to tackle the most common issues found in a Macintosh environment
Who this Course is aimed at?
Any person who may be called upon to troubleshoot or support Apple Macintosh’s. It is particularly well
suited for Mac users, perhaps in a small media company or a School that have been asked to provide inhouse support, or a PC/Windows engineer that has been asked to look after a small estate of Mac’s.
Although some material is naturally quite technical, the pace of the course and the practical exercises
mean that the material remains within the grasp of an average Mac User, or WinTel engineer.
This helps build confidence in the subject matter.
It would also provide a cost-effective and solid grounding for someone considering becoming an Apple
Certified engineer; as they will be exposed to many of concepts covered in the certification courses in
an integrated environment.
Prerequisites
Delegates should have a reasonable grasp of computer technology and concepts, ideally they will have
used a Mac before, but this is not essential.
Who this course is not aimed at?
Someone who does not understand computer technology or only works in a pure Windows
environment. Someone who needs Apple Accreditation for their work.
Collateral and On-Going Support
We firmly believe that our courses should be a “Password to Learning”. For this reason, we will provide
3 months free eMail and Skype technical support to the delegates to assist in them applying their newlearnt skills.
If they come across an issue they need help with, they will be welcome to contact us for advice or help.
In addition each delegate will be given a CD containing Diagnostic tools and resources they have used
over the course of their attendance, along with a course manual to take away.
