ARCHIBALD DANCY
of
Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Archibald Dancy, the son of William Dancy and Mary Mason, was born September 28,
1751 in Sussex County, Virginia. The Albemarle Parish Register states that he was
baptized November 17, 1751 and his godparents were David Mason, Jos. Pennington and
Anne Stevens. His parents would have nine children before his father’s death in 1761.
The children named in his father’s will were: Ann, John, William, Elizabeth, Mary,
Benjamin, Archibald, Francis and Sarah.
Archibald would marry, according to one researcher, Hannah Sessums1 of Edgecombe
County who was the daughter of Jacob Sessums. Hannah Sessums was not mentioned in
Jacob’s will as one of his children, nor was she mentioned in Archibald’s will. Jacob’s
will was indeed witnessed by Archibald and Edwin Dancy and proven during the
Edgecombe County May Court of 1792. During the February Court of 1796 legacies
were paid to Archibald Dancy and Rebekah Sessums. I find it inconceivable that
Hannah’s brother, Robert Sessums, would marry his niece Betsy. As such, I leave the
wife of Archibald open for much more needed research. Also at this point I have no idea
where the name of Hannah could have been derived from or if she was even a real
person.
The Dancy family moved to Edgecombe County in the early 1770s. His brother William
Dancy was first mentioned as a witness in the land transaction between James and
Thomas Hall in 1773. He, along with Benjamin Dicken and Ephraim Dicken were listed
as witnesses in the land transaction between Richard Ship and wife Frances to William
Dancy in 1786. The transaction involved 445 acres on the south side of Fishing Creek for
2000 silver dollars and was next to Jacob Sessums.
Archibald is not shown conducting any business affairs in his own name until January 9,
1786 when he sold two Negro boys named Abraham and York to Josiah Pender. In the
Edgecombe County February Court of 1789 a suit was settled involving a bastard child
that Delilah Dorman, daughter of Mitchell Dorman, claimed was Archibald’s. In this
scandal he agreed to give her two slaves and pay for the cost of the suit. In return, she and
her brother John, also her guardian, would raise the child at no expense to Archibald.
Mitchell Dorman had died in1784 in Edgecombe Co., NC, and left a will which was
contested and later thrown out. Archibald Dancy, the father of two illegitimate children
by Delilah, submitted a paper to the court "purporting to be the will of Mitchell Dorman
..." which left Mitchell's entire estate to Archibald and nothing to his widow and children.
The witnesses to the will stated that it had been made under duress and the court declared
it null and void. Mitchell's widow, Mary Dorman, was granted administration of his
estate 9 Feb. 1785.

(accessed Sept. 10, 2006). His research states that Hannah was Jacob Sessums’ daughter.

In the 1790 Federal Census for Edgecombe County he had listed for his household two
white males sixteen and upward, one white male under sixteen, six white females and
seventeen slaves. On October 1, 1790 he purchased 20 acres from George Cotton that
joined the Sessums, Savage, Bradley, Carlisle, Philips and Jelk families. Three weeks
later on October 23rd he increased his holding once again and purchased 286 acres on the
north side of Swift Creek from William Carlisle for 500 silver dollars. Archibald bought
100 acres on the north side of Swift Creek from Nathaniel Pope and his wife Mary on
March 4, 1793. This had increased his holdings to 406 acres.
Archibald wrote his will on September 24, 1798. He apparently was suffering from some
illness in which he knew that death was imminent. The will was witnessed by his brother
John, Stephen Coleman and Patience Taylor. The will named his children Rebekah,
Nancy, Betsey, Salley and Samuel, but did not mention his wife by name. At that time all
the children were under the age of twenty-one. The will was proven in the November
Court of 1800 by Stephen Coleman who was one of the subscribing witnesses.
Archibald’s brother William would write his will in March 1805 and it would also be
proven by Stephen Coleman.
Only three children were recorded during the division of Archibald’s estate from 1806 to
1808. “John Coleman and wife Rebekah sold their interest in two-fifths of the land which
was formerly the property of Archibald Dancy, dec’d” [Edge. Co. NC. DB 11, page 4],
“William Hodges and wife, Nancy Hodges of Livingston Co., Kentucky sold one-fifth
interest in the lands of Archibald Dancy, decd” [Edge. Co. NC. DB 11, page 547; Dated
24 Feb 1806], and “Robert Sessums and wife Elizabeth sold their one-fifth interest in the
lands received from the estate of Archibald Dancy, dec’d” [Edge. Co. NC. DB 12, page
426; dated 23 Aug 1808]. No record mentions his son Samuel, his daughter Salley, or his
widow in the division of his estate. Archibald’s widow may have remarried or she could
have died before 1806, but no record has been found to substantiate this idea. He did state
in his will that his estate was to be divided amongst his children at her death or when they
turned twenty-one, but at this point no proof of either has been found. A Sarah Dancey is
listed in the early marriage records of Livingston County, Kentucky. She married
Benjamin Coffield on July 10, 1806 and the relationship with the Coleman and Hodge
family seems to prove that she was the daughter mentioned in Archibald’s will. Benjamin
Coffield died in 1815 and one of the buyers of his estate was John E. Coleman. The estate
record also mentions William Hodge for receiving $39 for taking care of his widow Sarah
in 1817. Her children Archibald Dancy, West D., Stephen and Elizabeth were raised by
her brother-in-law Isaac S. Coffield and the records indicate they were in his household
in the 1820 census at Salem.

Letter to Maj. David Coffield,
North Carolina, Halifax County, Enfield.
Kentucky Livingston County Sept 9th 1816
Dear Cousin,
I recd cousin S. W. Coffield letter the 7th of June and you wrote that when I had any notion of marriage
that you wood be glad that I wood lett you no of it. You no my situation that is wheather I could do better if
I had a companion. I want you to write what I had best do. I wood been looking out before now but I will
wait for you anyway. To come to your country it is more than I can do. Though I could do better but I
could not get any person to take care of my business.
I wrote cousin S. W. Coffield a letter when I was at Frankford and I wrote in that letter concern
the same but now I write one to you on the same and concern the widow Coffield. She will make you all
think that I am the meanest man in Kentucky and I will in form you the hole. She bid for a Negro at one of
the hirin days of the Negro of Spear Coffield dec. and she dib til she got a shame and father bid of the
Negro and told her to take the Negro. She said that she thought that it was two much. Father say take her
and I will reduce as much of your account that I have got against you as to lett the Negro come at your own
bid. She took the Negro on them terms. Now she says that father gave the hire and all of the account to
her free gratis which is not the truth.
I call on her one day for the money as father was bound for the money and not her. She told me
that she wood pay the money as soon as she could get any and in a few day after. She sent me word to
warrant her that she wood not pay any. I acomidation her and I paid the cost. She denies ever having any
such conversation with me. The account I had against her was $36 and the Negro hire was $36. I then told
her that if she wood pay the hire of the Negro that I wood through away my account. She refused to close.
Now you can judge whether I meant anything was wrong or not. I told her this before the warrant was
tried. She refuse paying one cent. I then went on tryal.
It is common when a young man has any property in this county there is many sceams lade to
brake him as she was told to do what she did. I am by my self but I hope that I will come out yet. They are
bringing notes against my father that has been due six or seven years which I know that is not just. Mr.
Christopher Haynes and Robt Hodge is very friendly to in form me what is best to do. Nothing more only I
hope that these few lines may find you all well as it leaves me and my family.
I am your loving cousin until death.
