The Iowa Department of Correctional Services, 5th Judicial District is currently accepting
applications for a post-doctoral psychology position for the 2013-2014 year.
The 5th Judicial District is a community-based corrections agency that provides supervision and
treatment for adults on probation or parole. The 5th District serves probationers or parolees
residing in 15 counties surrounding Polk County, Iowa.
This post-doctoral position will provide psychological services for the 5th Judicial District’s Drug
Court program. Drug Court utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach, comprised of probation
officers, therapists, prosecuting and defense attorneys, and a Polk County Judge in order to
provide supervision, substance abuse treatment and family reunification to individuals selected
into the program. Participants selected into the program consist of adult males and females with
substantial substance abuse and criminal histories. Drug Court is expanding the type and level of
services offered with this post-doctoral position, wherein the post-doctorate chosen for this
position will provide psychological evaluations, risk assessments, and intellectual assessments,
as well as facilitate individual, group, and family/couples therapy as needed. Since Drug Court
works collaboratively with the Court the person in this post-doctoral position will have frequent
interactions with Court proceedings, will be asked to testify as a fact and/or expert witness, and
therefore will gain valuable experience in the field of forensic psychology. Certification and/or
experience with substance abuse or addiction treatment is preferred, but is not required.
This one-year position would begin in July or August 2013, depending on the applicant’s
timeline for completing the pre-doctoral internship. The stipend is $45,000 without benefits.
Clinical supervision will be provided by a Licensed Psychologist and is provided at no cost to the
post-doctorate.
