The majority of the offences are against organisation’s intellectual property rights, and includes copyright offences, leaking of company information, and organisational sabotage. As an examiner I have conducted computer based investigations into Intellectual Property for Trade Associations including the British Phonographic Industry (music industry), Federation against Copyright Theft (film industry), ELSPA (software industry), and many other national and international companies including NTL, Walt Disney, Rolex, and Tiffany’s. Working closely on behalf of these companies and organisations I have liaised very closely with law enforcement including Police, Trading Standards, and their legal partners. I have conducted the largest investigation of its kind into a considerable conspiracy to defraud on behalf of the Trade Associations, in which prosecutions have been brought against twelve individuals. The case has recently been concluded with all defendants pleading guilty prior to trial. Dec 2001 to Nov 2004 Staffordshire Police, Economic Crime Unit - Hi-tech Crime Unit Detective Constable - Network Investigator As a part of the Economic Crime Unit I provided a point of contact, both internally and externally, for advice and training on hi-tech crime investigation and prevention, based on physical and logical security. The advice may have taken the form of presentations and by directly liaising with professional bodies and companies, often at board level. Internally I provided investigative support to other members of the Unit and Investigators across the Force. The support was to assist investigators with aspects of the investigation where the crime was committed either on a computer or a computer is used to store data which may be used as evidence. The types of investigations included major fraud, paedophilia and major incidents which require sensitive handling and results to specific time constraints, due to their serious and often complex nature. The support entailed forensic computing and the investigation of digital evidence, including large networks using, covert and overt, conventional and hi-tech techniques.
