Description
The Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Storage Array 12000 (ESA12000) is a fully integrated UltraSCSI
RAID system, providing the proven reliability, performance, and connectivity benefits of UltraSCSI. It is
supported on Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS, and IBM AIX. The ESA12000 is a price/performance leader with
fully configured arrays at a very low cost per MB.
ESA storage systems can be built for unlimited capacity from a set of basic building blocks. ESA building
blocks consist of preconfigured cabinets/racks including array controllers, power supplies, cooling and
environmental monitors.
The product set includes all necessary components, including optical Fibre Channel hubs and disk devices.
Preconfigured base models are optimized for use in a specific application workload. Base models can be
configured for high-capacity, general business, or optimal high performance operation.
The ESA12000 system can be configured for the general business demands of transaction-oriented
applications, providing economical high-capacity storage for data mining operations or providing the highbandwidth required by decision support applications. Preconfigured expansion units are available for each
model type for simple integration of additional capacity and/or performance. Users have the flexibility of
configuring their ESA12000 system to match their own unique application performance and capacity needs.
The ESA12000 system is also available in high performance Fibre Channel models.
For users who require midrange departmental solutions, Compaq offers the RAID Array 8000 (RA8000)
UltraSCSI and RA8000 Fibre Channel models. The RA8000 provides the same performance level as the
comparable UltraSCSI or Fibre Channel ESA12000 models, but is packaged in departmental pedestal
models and rackable models for use in RETMA or metric racks. The RA8000 provides 24-disk base
capability and can expand to 48 or 72 disks using expansion cabinets.
The ESA12000 storage controllers provide two host ports in each controller for available host bandwidth of
80 MB/s. The ESA12000 storage controller is the Compaq HSZ80 running Array Controller Software
(ACS) V8.3. The HSZ80 is the latest UltraSCSI controller in a line of StorageWorks controllers. It is a
follow-on to the HSZ70 controller used in RA7000 and ESA10000 storage systems.
The ACS software is designed to support multiple platforms providing features that include: dual-controller
operation, controller failover, mirrored write-back cache, read-ahead cache, RAID implementation, disk
mirroring, and disk partitioning capabilities. In addition, ACS manages host interconnect and protocol
services to provide data for event notification and status as displayed by the StorageWorks Command
Console.
Disk drives are connected to controllers through six UltraSCSI (40 MB/s) channels. Storage controller pairs
can connect up to 72 disks. ESA12000 data center cabinets provide capacity for 48 disks using a pair of 24slot enclosures. Expansion is provided with additional cabinetry or as selected using the ESA12000
building blocks. With 18 GB UltraSCSI wide disks, a single ESA12000 system provides disk capacity from
432 GB to 1.3 TB using ½ to 1½ cabinets of space. Servers can be connected to multiple ESA12000
systems for unlimited storage capacity. Space is provided in the new ESA12000 cabinet for the necessary
cache batteries, UltraSCSI hubs, and UPS options as needed.
The Compaq Enterprise Storage Array 12000 offers RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, and 3/5 and is ideal for
capacity requirements from 300 GB at the entry level, through multiple terabytes and beyond, limited only
by host connectivity. ESA12000 solutions offer the highest availability with fully redundant components,
including power supplies and fans. The architecture incorporates the latest in StorageWorks UltraSCSI
RAID controller technology, as well as the StorageWorks Command Console, an easy-to-use centralized
configuration and management tool.
ESA12000 controllers include 256 MB of cache standard. Upgrades to 1 GB cache per controller pair are
available. Cache features include mirrored write-back cache for use in optimizing performance where
redundant capabilities are required for high availability system configurations. In the rare event that a
storage controller fails, the mirrored data is immediately available to the remaining controller for continuing
operation.
ESA12000 supports high availability in cluster configurations including Compaq OpenVMS Clusters,
Compaq TruCluster V1.5 with Tru64 UNIX, and HACMP with IBM RS/6000 AIX.

Compaq StorageWorks Command Console (SWCC)
The Compaq StorageWorks Command Console V2.1 is a full-featured, multiplatform configuration and
monitoring tool for Compaq Enterprise Storage Arrays. It allows relatively simple configuration of the
storage array, and also provides an at-a-glance summary status through a user-friendly graphical interface.
The console supports industry-standard protocols such as the Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP). In addition, enhanced security and protection capabilities are built in. The extensibility of the
StorageWorks Command Console is virtually limitless, as it can manage multiple arrays across the
enterprise.
SWCC is included in the HSZ80 Software Solutions Platform kit. The use of this client/server tool allows
users to configure RAID sets locally or over a TCP/IP network. It can be used to monitor RAID subsystems
and notify users of events by updating a video display, sending electronic mail, or alerting via a pager.
The Command Console client is available on Windows 95 and on platforms running Windows NT. A new
Storage Window for the HSZ80 controller supports Array Controller Software (ACS) V8.3.
