Federation of Students Student Leadership Award Nomination Reference for Kieng Iv February 24, 2009 Please explain to the committee why you feel this person is deserving of the Federation of Students’ Student Leadership Award. I have known Kieng since he entered the AFM program in 2006. He has made is presence known to me through his enthusiasm for his program and his willingness to take on volunteer opportunities. The AFM program is a very challenging program and requires a lot of dedication on the student’s part and for a student to find the time to volunteer and take on leadership roles to demonstrate to his fellow peers that a student can be successful in both academics and extra-curriculars should definitely be commended. Kieng has assisted me with a number of recruitment initiatives and has represented the School of Accounting and Finance as an Ambassador in a number of capacities. I had made Kieng one of my Team Leaders because of how mature and cooperative he always attempts to be. As one of my Team Leaders, Kieng has demonstrated to me that he has the confidence and leadership skills to work well in a stressful situation as well as working with others - supervisors, peers and subordinates. Kieng treats everyone with the utmost respect and treats everyone as an equal. Kieng’s involvement as a recruitment volunteer and speaker has been to help answer questions from prospective students, parents, teachers and guidance counsellors about admission issues, the AFM program, and student life experiences. Kieng is a natural presenter with an easy style which demonstrates his natural leadership abilities. Kieng has also represented the University of Waterloo and the School of Accounting and Finance at the Ontario Universities Fair. As a volunteer at the OUF, Kieng had to cooporate with a large number of other volunteers and is always helpful, mindful and considerate. Volunteering at the OUF can be stressful to which I feel Kieng was able to handle himself successfully and naturally took on a leadership role in guiding the younger students on my team. In answering questions from parents and students, Kieng always listened intently and answered their questions courteously and quickly. His maturity level and communication skills are exceptional. As a Peer Leader, Director of the Working Paper, Co-Chair of the Accounting Orientation Committee, to name just a few of Kieng’s involvements, Kieng has had to work with administrative staff at all levels and has always been open and considerate of others. I absolutely do not hesitate to recommend Kieng for the FEDs Student Leadership Award. You may receive many nominations, but if you take the time to get to know Kieng, you’ll feel as I do, that he is the epitome of a leader who genuinely cares and is enthusiastic about everything he does.
