Half month in Tibet, I took 24 hours’ train in hard-seat through the Hoh Xil, and watched the sunset of Mount Everest. In Sichuan Yading, I hiked 9 hours above the altitude of 4500m, and saw the Last Shangri-La. In Cambodia, I ate the traditional snack

— a spider in diameter of 6cm! …This is my life, instead of insipid daily repetition, but full of fresh things and different feelings.

Used to decide my own life from the childhood, I followed my heart to choose the major of

Tourist Management. As the top 5 student in the college, I expected my future career as working and living in different places, experiencing different challenges every day, regardless of money or reputation. So after a conversation with three professionals, when I was surprised to find the job in hotel industry matched all my longings for future career, I believed it was the one!

I put 100% commitment for my love, tried my best to keep efficient in the first internship in

Accor, Great-China Regional Office. In the marketing department which mainly supported

Ibis brand, I prepared the data of over 40 hotels for the performance review, self-studied different kinds of distribution reports and even argued with the global IT department, insisting on changing the wrong data they provided after a system upgrade. I enjoyed such crazy devotion!

I grasped every chance to make difference in my beloved industry. While my colleagues suggested lower rate on brand web to stimulate CRS production, I re-activated our

In 4 months, the regional total CRS contribution really improved 4%! The great sense of achievement, that my idea could influence the hotel performance directly, made me more determined in the hospitality industry, especially focusing on improving business strategies by the revenue management.

However, when I reviewed this internship, I found that the strategies from regional office were often challenged by the individual hotels for wrongly estimating their capital and human resource. In order to design a feasible strategy, I realized the importance of familiarizing myself with the hotel running process. Therefore I rejected the decent job offer from Accor, which was the highest praise for my 4-month excellent performance, and started my work in Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, even as a reservations trainee.

I had my own belief to the perfect service — delivering initiative care. I took the active connection with guests before their arrivals, asking their room preferences and transportation arrangements. Even after 14 hours' work, I still kept warm smile while coordinating guests' various requests. My efforts earned a lot of compliment from my guests. And meanwhile, I did get to know the divisions and responsibilities of hotel operation teams by this experience.

I cherished the opportunity to closely cooperate with the revenue manager, and work for practical revenue management in a property. So I accepted the official offer from Waldorf and became a reservation agent after graduation, different from most of my peers expecting high-paid, prestigious positions.

One year at the new position, I found the virulent price competition was very serious in local market. Our luxury hotel was also involved, under the pressure of owners, to match the competitors ’ lower and lower price during low seasons. But such declining ADR destroyed the hotel brand image directly. The cause of this phenomenon, according to my analysis, was that the hotel lacked a revenue strategy for overall development, neglecting the brand position, and therefore hadn ’t strong reasons to persuade owners to keep room rate. So as for me, I would like to be a revenue manager with comprehensive consideration for hotel long-term development. And meanwhile, I will communicate with others to implement these right strategies. Then in the future, I expect to bring my idea of integrated revenue management to larger areas, seeing my value on designing more influential strategies as a regional revenue director.

According to my career plan, for good strategies, I need expand my industry network to get more practical ideas from ‘working-world’, and make up the professional knowledge. For strategy implementation, I want to train my multicultural communication skills. That

’s why I apply NYU M.S. in Hospitality Industry Studies program. Because it can just meet these three needs.

I could lay more reliable knowledge foundation to plan detail actions of a revenue strategy in the future.
