Physical Assessment of Adults
PURPOSE:


To meet education requirements for billing for Medicaid services; and
To meet consolidated agreement and agreement addendum requirements.
ACCEPTANCE
CRITERIA:


Completion of agency orientation
BSN or completion of “Introduction to Principles and Practices of Public
Health and Public Health Nursing”
Completion/signing of Joint Planning Agreement.


COST:


The didactic portion of the course runs for eleven weeks and consists of four
modules, with two weeks scheduled between modules. The course starts with
a full-day of didactic instruction via webinar followed by a series of half-day
webinars covering the topics in each module. After each webinar, participants
work with clinical advisors to practice specific physical exam skills in their
individual health departments and document their experiences. The last 1 ½
day session is face-to-face in Chapel Hill. The didactic portion is followed by
a six-month clinical practicum.
Upon successful completion of the final examination on didactic portion of
course, participant is required to perform specified number of successful
complete physical exams, male exams and pelvic bimanual exams working
with Clinical Advisor(s)
Upon completion of this experience, a final independent clinical check-off of
skills is required.
A fee of $400.00 is charged for this course. Other costs are underwritten
by funding from the Division of Public Health.
Transportation, motel, and per diem expenses are the responsibility of the
individual agency.
HOW TO
APPLY:
Courses are offered twice each year, once in the fall and once in the spring,
provided there is sufficient demand. Brochures are sent to each local health
department prior to each course. Actual course registration is handled by the
NC Institute for Public Health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public

CREDIT:


Contact hours (through the Public Health Nursing and Professional
Development Unit) are awarded following successful completion of
course (with a score of 80% or better on exam), Clinical practicum, and
final clinical check-off.
Completion of course does NOT guarantee a change in job title or
classification.

CHALLENGE
PROCESS:
There is a challenge process for written component of course; to determine if
a nurse is eligible, contact your regional nurse consultant out of the Public
Health Nursing and Professional Development Unit. A fee of $250 is
charged to participants who challenge.
