MRS.PRAG’S ALGEBRA II ***KEYS FOR SUCCESS*** WHAT IS SUCCESS? No matter your definition of success whether it is solid preparation for higher level math, getting credit for graduation or simply pleasing your folks, I will consider this year a success if we can surpass those expectations and open your mind to the realm of mathematical thinking and all the benefits it can offer. #1 – KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT Course Description: This course is designed for college-bound students who have successfully completed Algebra I & Geometry (recommended 75% grade or above). We will cover topics in preparation for College Algebra and/or Trigonometry. A successful student will be highly self-motivated, willing to seek help when needed and utilize the textbook to reinforce concepts discussed in class. #2 – GIVE YOUR BEST EFFORT- EVERY DAY! Come prepared! Bring to class: Textbook: Holt Algebra 2 Completed Assignments 1” Math Binder or some sort of binder Sharpened or mechanical Pencils Loose-Leaf Paper (no spiral fringe preferred) INSTEAD OF SAYING… “I can’t do this.” “None of this makes sense.” “I’m not a good test taker.” “I’ll never use this stuff in real life.” “I’ll ignore the difficult questions.” “I don’t have time for this.” Graph Paper (on occasion) Graphing Calculator – Recommended: TI-84 A Positive Attitude! CHOOSE TO… Pretend that you can. What would that look/feel like? How would my actions change? Give yourself credit! You probably know more than you think. Isolate specific questions or problems and ask for clarification in class or privately. Be prepared. Nothing eases test anxiety like preparation. Study a little each day. Follow my advice on memory work and make flashcards to reinforce the concept. Trust that I’ll teach you to appreciate the process and show you how to apply it outside the classroom. Math isn’t just about working problems. Leave no questions unanswered. Don’t let your doubts build. Your thoughts will shift to what you don’t understand instead of what you do know. Get help from me, a tutor or a friend as soon as possible. Fully utilize your time in class. Don’t procrastinate. Devise a study plan. Break down objectives into smaller tasks. Work a little each day. #2 – STAY ORGANIZED Maintain a 1”, 3-ring math binder with the following 4 tabs: 1. Class Notes 3. Quizzes 2. Homework 4. Tests Keeping your work organized is a great way to be prepared for homework quizzes and to have material to study for chapter tests, 9 week CRTs (Cumulative Review Tests) and final exams. Use proper headings on EVERY assignment: First and Last Name Class Hour Assignment: Section, Page Number & Problems Assigned #3 – REMEMBER: GRADES AREN’T EVERYTHING, BUT THEY ARE IMPORTANT Final grades will be determined by the following: 10% Final Exam 60% Tests/Quizzes 25% Homework 5% Class Participation Homework: Homework is typically given on a daily basis. Staying current on homework assignments is KEY to success in this course. Homework quizzes have problems found in the assignments and brand new questions. You may use your homework papers and notes but may not use the textbook when completing a homework quiz. You must always SHOW WORK to get credit on the quiz. Late Work Policy: If you miss class for any reason, you are required to makeup the work within the policies set forth in the student handbook. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements to makeup quizzes or tests. All students present on the day of a quiz or test will take the quiz/test unless absent 2 or more days immediately prior to the quiz/test day. Testing dates are posted several days in advance. Makeup quizzes & tests may be different and more difficult in form. Students are encouraged to take quizzes or tests early if they know in advance that they will be gone. Makeup tests/quizzes must be completed in the math lab before or after school. Very rarely will I let you makeup tests/quizzes in class because I do not want you to miss new material being taught. Feel free to visit: Mornings from 7:45-8:10 Afternoons until 3:45 Math Lab: check for times as they are posted Dear Student, I am honored and privileged to be your teacher this year! I look forward to getting to know you better and uncovering your full math potential! Let’s work together to have a great classroom experience!
