In case of a medical emergency, please go directly to the Emergency room. If you live on-campus, please call public safety to call an ambulance for you. Banking: Below is a list of some of the local banks in the area. Some banks may charge fees for opening a checking or savings account and require a minimum balance in the account at all times. Many banks offer an automatic teller machine (ATM) card, which allows you to withdraw money from an automated machine. There may be a fee for this service. International Student Reference Directory 3 Banks’ Customer Identification Programs (CIP): U.S. financial institutions are required to verify the identity of every individual who opens a bank account. In compliance with federal regulations, all banks operating in the U.S have established Customer Identification Programs (CIP) that they are to follow for anyone who seeks to open an account. The following is minimal information that the banks must obtain from you before allowing you to open an account: 1. Your name 2. Your date of birth 3. Your street address - - no P.O. Box 4. An identification number ** **The identification number can be one or more of the following: ∙a taxpayer identification number (see discussion below); ∙passport number and country of issuance; ∙alien identification card number; ∙or number and country of issuance of any other government-issued document evidencing nationality or residence and bearing a photograph or similar safeguard.” It is important to remember that banks establish their own customer identification programs and may ask for additional documentation than is described above because they are ultimately responsible for establishing the identity of their customers. International Student Reference Directory 4 Social Security Card: A Social Security card is needed in order to receive a paycheck from your employer. It is a number issued by the Federal Government that allows them to keep track of your earnings. The Social Security Administration will NOT allow F-1 Students to apply for a Social Security number unless you have documentation of valid employment. You will also need a letter from the Office of International Student Services verifying you are eligible for employment. Once you’ve registered for classes and have secured an on-campus job, you MUST come to The Office of International Student Services and request a letter to take to the Social Security office. The Office of International Student Services will provide you with all of the necessary information and documentation. The local Social Security Office is located at: 2200 Route 10 West 2nd Floor Parsippany, NJ 07054 Driver’s License: If you need a driver’s license, you must pass a written examination and receive a driving permit. You will then be required to take a road test to demonstrate your driving abilities, all before actually getting your license. You must bring: 1. Passport 2. I-20/DS-2019 3. Visa 4. I-94 card 5. Full-time status letter 6. Proof of address 7. FDU ID 8. Social Security Card or, 9. Social Security Exempt letter (if you do not have a SSN). Most Motor Vehicle Agencies are open from 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday. Note: International students can go to ANY N.J. Motor Vehicle Agency. International Student Reference Directory 5 Academic Integrity Policy: Students enrolled at FDU are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. Students have the responsibility to each other to make known the existence of academic dishonesty to their course instructor and then, if necessary, the department chair, school director or the academic dean of the College. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not necessarily limited to the following: 1. CHEATING – Giving or receiving unauthorized assistance in any academic exercise or examination. Using or attempting to use any unauthorized materials, information or study aids in an examination or academic exercise. 2. PLAGIARISM – Representing the ideas or language of others as one’s own. 3. FALSIFICATION – Falsifying or inventing any information, data or citation in an academic exercise. 4. MULTIPLE SUBMISSION - Submitting substantial portions of any academic exercise more than once for credit without prior authorization and approval of the current professor. 5. COMPLICITY – Facilitating any of the above actions or performing work that another student then presents as his or her assignment. 6. INTERFERENCE – Interfering with the ability of a student to perform his or her assignments. SANCTIONS: Any student found guilty of academic dishonesty will, for the first offense, receive one or a combination of the following penalties: 1. NO CREDIT (0) OR FAILURE FOR THE ACADEMIC EXERCISE. 2. REDUCED GRADE for the course. 3. A FAILURE IN THE COURSE that is identified on the student’s permanent record card as permanent and cannot be removed. 4. Recommendation for ACADEMIC PROBATION to the dean’s office. For a second offense of academic dishonesty, a student will be subject to any combination of the above sanctions and, with concurrence of the academic dean, one of the following: 1. SUSPENSION from the University for one year. Readmission will be contingent upon the approval of the academic dean. 2. The New York Times also has an international news section. The New York Times, The Record and USA Today, are available for free on-campus. The Library also has a variety of international newspapers available in print as well as on the Internet. 7 International Student Reference Directory Entertainment: Check with the information desk in the Student Center to find out what is happening on-campus. You should also look out for flyers on the various bulletin boards located around campus. The METRO, the campus newspaper, is also a good source of information for campus events. For off-campus entertainment in New Jersey and New York City, check local newspapers (The Daily Record.) The Friday edition and the Sunday Arts and Leisure section of the New York Times gives a listing of different events going on in New York City. The Thursday edition of the Star Ledger has a local community calendar and the Friday edition has a statewide weekend calendar. Movie Theaters: Many theaters have discount rates for “First Shows” or “Twilight Shows” which start around 4pm. Check the local paper or call the theater for the current listing of movies, times and cost. Some theaters offer discounts to students when you show a valid student ID card. Columns – Columns is the FDU Florham-Madison Campus yearbook. It presents a year of history through pictures, narrative and graphic arts. All full-time undergraduate seniors who have their senior portraits taken receive a complimentary copy of the book. Commuter Student Association (CSA) – The main objective of this association is to advocate for the needs and interests of the commuter student population. The association also serves as a means for commuters interested in getting involved in clubs and activities. It also provides commuters with opportunities for socializing and networking among fellow commuter students. Emerging Leaders – The purpose of Emerging Leaders is to: enhance leadership skills in students; foster leadership on campus; increase self-confidence levels in students; promote selfgrowth in students; and encourage the next generation to be involved on campus. Florham Programming Committee – The purpose of this board is to plan, organize and execute activities that meet the diverse needs and interests of the student body. The board encourages an atmosphere of cooperative programming among all student clubs and organizations. The office is located on the first floor of the Student Center. The Metropolitan – This is the campus newspaper published by students for students. The purposes of the publication are: provide accurate information to the campus community about events and issues; print articles by and for the students that are of significant interest to students; educate its members in the methods, privileges, and responsibilities of journalism; and allow students to gain experience in all areas of newspaper work. Resident Student Association (RSA) RSAFDU@yahoo.com – This association addresses resident student needs and also plans events and programs. Student Government Association (SGA) sgafdu@yahoo.com – This Student Government Association is under the auspices of the Dean of Students Office. SGA consists of an elected body of student leaders who are responsible for reviewing all student opinions and representing the student body by communicating with faculty and administration. Student Volunteer Association (SVA) – The purpose of this association is to promote citizenship by performing acts of community service for the Fairleigh Dickinson population, as well as the communities in the surrounding areas. International Student Reference Directory 15 WFDM Radio Station 91.9 & TV Channel 80 on Campus – WFDM is the student-run campus radio station. Members gain valuable experience in broadcasting as well as a technical background in radio production. The station is located in the Florence Twombly Residence Hall. Multi-Cultural Clubs & Organizations Association of Black Collegians (ABC) – The purposes of this organization are: institute an academic atmosphere for students of color and the student body; build a sense of pride and meaning for students of color and the student body; engage in wholesome community, cultural, academic and social activities; and become a prime force in the betterment of campus affairs. Gay and Straight Peers (GASP) – The purpose of the organization is to provide activities, events, and support human rights for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer community. Indian Sub-Continent Student Association – The main purpose of this organization is to educate and promote understanding of Indian culture through various activities. Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) & Member of Inter-Greek Council (IGC) – The purpose of this council is to set standards and procedures for the growth and development of Greek life on campus and to govern, within the limitations established by the Dean of Students Office, on all matters pertaining to fraternity life. Italian Club – The intent of this club is to advance cultural awareness of Italian-Americans on the campus. Japanese Club – The purpose of this organization is to promote awareness of the Japanese culture (celebrations, food, music, fashion, movies, etc.) through activities. Social Organizations Anime Club – The purpose of this club is to promote appreciation of anime and explore how aspects of different cultures are incorporated into anime. Chess Club – The mission of the club is to provide chess enthusiasts a forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas, strategies, and theory while applying the principles in games against one another. 16 Devils Dance Team – The purpose of this club is to provide an opportunity for dancers to showcase their dancing and choreographing abilities by performing at campus events. The club provides opportunities for students to improve their dance knowledge and skills as well as show pride for the school. Role Playing Gamers Society – The mission of the society is to form an organized forum for those students interested in role-playing games. Scribbler’s Literary Society – The purpose of the society is to put together a creative writing magazine, organize literary readings and to expose its members to outside sources of inspiration. Starshine Theatre Company – The purpose of this club is to enable students to pursue work in theatre outside of the main stage productions.
