Dr. Njwen Anyangwe-Ngute's Brief Biography
Dr. Njwen Anyangwe-Ngute is an Interdisciplinary Scientist, with diverse background in Regulatory Toxicology,
Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Cancer biology, and Nutrition. She has substantial experience in the safety
assessment of food and dietary ingredients in regulatory submissions to the US Food and Drug Administration. She
is currently a Senior Scientist at Exponent, an Engineering and Science Consulting Firm, where she evaluates the
safety of food ingredients. She has over 13 years of university teaching experience. She has taught Biochemistry,
Organic Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, and Nutrition and Health courses at the University of Buea, Cameroon;
Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan; and Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Njwen Anyangwe-Ngute completed her post-doctoral research fellowship at Wayne State University School of
Medicine, Detroit, Michigan, with assistance from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney
Disorders (NIDDK) minority RO1 supplement. Her post-doctoral research focused on signaling pathways in
colorectal cancer, which earned her a poster of distinction for her poster titled 'Src kinase inhibition may inhibit
experimental cancer metastasis,' presented at the Digestive Disease Week (DDW) Annual meeting (May 2008).
Dr. Anyangwe-Ngute obtained her Doctorate Degree in Nutrition and Food Science, with a minor in Cancer Biology
(2005) from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Her Ph.D. research focused on the role of the tumor
suppressor gene p53 in DNA polymerase β-dependent base excision repair pathway. As a doctoral student, she was
a recipient of several awards, scholarships and fellowships including Graduate Student Professional Travel Award,
Summer Dissertation Fellowship, Department of Nutrition and Food Science Scholarship, Arthur J. Walker
Memorial Annual Scholarship, Parent Family Endowed Scholarship, Graduate- Professional Scholarship, and
Thomas Rumble Fellowship. She was inducted into Wayne State University’s Epsilon Beta Chapter of Phi Beta
Delta Honor Society for International Scholars in 2002.
She holds a M.S. degree in Medical Biochemistry (1995) from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Her M.S.
research focused on the efficacy of some antidiabetic herbs, Scoparia dulcis and Catharanthus roseus in the
management of Diabetes Mellitus.
Dr. Anyangwe-Ngute holds a B.S. degree (First Class Honors) in Biochemistry (1991) from the University of Port
Harcourt, Nigeria. Being the first student to ever obtain a First Class Honors degree (equivalent to summa cum
laude) in Biochemistry at the University of Port Harcourt, she was honored with numerous prizes at the graduation
ceremony including Best Graduating Female Student, Best Faculty of Science Student, Best Biochemistry Student,
Dr. Omogbai’s Memorial Prize for Best Biochemistry Student, and University of Port Harcourt’s Women Prize for
Best Graduating Female Student. Her B.S. research focused on the efficacy of different brands of chloroquine on
malaria parasites.
Dr. Anyangwe-Ngute has developed scientific presentations, presented at several scientific meetings, and coauthored some peer-reviewed publications. She is a member of several professional organizations including Society
of Toxicology, Food and Drug Law Institute, Genetic Toxicology Association, African Society of Toxicological
Sciences, and Association for Women in Science.
Dr. Anyangwe-Ngute has specific interest in cancer awareness, with a focus on early detection/screening and
nutrition as essential steps towards reducing the burden of cancer. She is a Certified Health Promotion Instructor
(volunteer) with the American Cancer Society (ACS), where she conducts new volunteer speaker training. She has
been an invited speaker during Cancer Awareness months and Annual Health Fairs at the Office of the
Commissioned Corp Force Management, Rockville, MD; National Wesleyan Church, Hyattsville, MD; Agape Life
Ministries, Laurel MD; and VEMCO launching. She has acted as moderator and/or panelist at several conferences
on cancer such as the ACS African-American Men Health Conference; Wisdom, Wealth and Wellness Conference;
and All Cameroonian Cultural and Development Foundation Cancer Awareness symposium.
Overall, Dr. Njwen Anyangwe-Ngute is passionate about Education, Science, and Health. Her other interests
include interior decoration, photography, and traveling. She is married to Dr. Franklin Muanja Ngute.
