Achievement Week Committee Psi Alpha Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. “Achievement Week Awards and Criteria” September 1, 2011 Achievement Week Committee The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Psi Alpha Chapter Achievement Week Committee is composed of a committee chair plus appointed Chapter Brothers. The focus and concentration is on the following four primary areas: I. Purpose of Achievement Week II. Achievement Week Awards III. National Essay Contest IV. Committee Setup and Rules I. Purpose of Achievement Week Achievement Week was established to celebrate the birth of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, to honor its founders', and to recognize those brothers and citizens who best exemplify our four cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. To that end we in Psi Alpha Chapter host a week of diverse activities which deal with Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift, culminating with a Founders' Banquet. II. Achievement Week Awards The following award categories have been identified in accordance with *National, District, and Local Chapter requirements: *Omega Man of the Year *Founders’ Award *Superior Service Award *Citizen of the Year * Colonel Charles Young Award • Lifetime Achievement • Purple and Gold Award • Unsung Hero • Special Recognition The committee’s charge is to administer uniform Chapter-wide minimum criteria for these awards. This includes the nomination, selection and documentation required for these awards to be consistently administered at the chapter, district and international levels. The ultimate objective is to produce nominees of the highest qualifications that support the award criteria and ideals of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The criteria for the awards are listed below for Psi Alpha Chapter: Nominations must be made by Financial Members of Psi Alpha Chapter. 2 A Brother making nominations must select a single category that based on the criteria best describes their nominee’s efforts. A Brother can make nominations in multiple categories, but only one nominee per category. Self-nominations are permitted but limited to one category of the nominees’ choice. Omega Man of the Year Award. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Brother who is financial at all levels of the fraternity during the current year and one year prior to the year he is nominated. Be a Brother who has made significant contributions to his Chapter, his District and the National level of the Fraternity. Exhibit the highest ideals of the Four Cardinal Principles. Be involved in the majority of activities undertaken by the Chapter. Be one who has made significant contributions to his community. Exhibit vision, leadership, and responsibility from a planning and execution point of reference. Support all Mandated Fraternity Programs. Founders’ Award. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Brother who is financial at all levels of the fraternity during the current nominated. Exhibit the highest ideals of the Four Cardinal Principles. Should be recognized for his contributions to society that have enhanced the welfare of mankind, both locally and nationally. Have shown sustained contributions and achievements over several years to reflect lifelong service to the Fraternity. Support all Mandated Fraternity Programs. Superior Service Award. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Brother who is financial at all levels of the fraternity during the current year he is nominated. Be a Brother who has demonstrated outstanding contributions and shown sustained concern for the activities of his chapter, District and to the Fraternity. Served in a manner above and beyond the ordinary participation levels necessary to implement programs and should be involved with the organizations, planning and implementation of programs and projects. Support all Mandated Fraternity Programs. 3 Citizen of the Year. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Brother from the Chapter or Citizen from the local area. If a Brother, he does not have to be financial but must not be expelled, suspended, or on probation. Should be a person of local / regional / national recognition acclaimed by a significant segment of the community for outstanding contributions to the welfare of mankind. Should be recognized as a leader in his field of endeavor, who has made a significant advance(s) or changes resulting in a major improvement in that particular discipline, project, program, or entity. Colonel Charles Young Military Leadership Award Colonel (Bro) Charles Denton Young was elected the second honorary member of the Fraternity on March 8, 1912. Colonel Young, the ranking African-American officer in the military at the time of his death, died in Africa on January 2, 1922. To commemorate the great works of this Omega Man, the Omega Memorial Day and the ritual were both revised by the 1922 Grand Conclave held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Colonel Young was highly respected by the brothers and today is still regarded as a great military leader and a role model for all Omega Men. Nominee must be financial on the Chapter, District and National Levels. The nominee must be considered “on active duty” with any branch of the US armed forces during the period in which he is nominated. The nominee’s rank is not a consideration for this award (can be enlisted or a commissioned officer). Nominees must have served in a manner above and beyond the ordinary participation levels necessary to implement programs and projects. Nominees should be involved with the organization, planning and implementation of programs and projects. Lifetime Achievement. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Brother from the Chapter, he does not have to be financial but must not be expelled, suspended, or on probation. Have a combination of a minimum of 25 years in the fraternity and 50 years of age to be considered for this award. Have shown sustained contributions and achievements over several years to reflect lifelong service to the Fraternity. Should be recognized on the sum total of his efforts and activities in and outside of the fraternity, along with exhibiting a willingness to serve his fraternity, community, and mankind. 4 Purple and Gold Award. Nominee must meet the following criteria: Be a Citizen from the local area. (not a brother) Have made outstanding contributions to the community at large and/or some particular organization, cause, or event in the current fraternal year that he/she is being considered. Should make a difference to the community on a daily basis. Demonstrated ability must be expressed in write up. Unsung Hero. Nominee is a Brother or Quette who has shown dedication through a support role in fraternity activities and has exemplified perseverance in their endeavors. Special Recognition. Brothers who have received some type of extraordinary recognition which will not otherwise be recognized under the established award criteria as set forth by the Chapter can be recognized. Recognition will bring additional favor upon our Brother and upon the Psi Alpha Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. III. National Essay Contest. Although the submission of essays are not due to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. International Headquarters until well after the Achievement Week activities, it shall be made clear that the National Essay Contest is a key part of Achievement Week as designed by the fraternity. Brothers are encouraged to identify High School Seniors to write an essay and submit it to Psi Alpha Chapter. This process can help the Chapter in two categories of fraternity business; 1. For the essay contest and 2. For future scholarship applicants. The form is provided as part of this document at Enclosure 3. Instructions for completion, submission, and evaluation of the form are provided on the form. IV. Committee Setup and Rules Achievement Week Committee will consist of a Committee Chairman or CoChairman as appointed by the Basileus of Psi Alpha Chapter. Psi Alpha Chapter members can volunteer to serve on the committee but must be in good standing with the Chapter. 5 The awards selection sub-committee will be appointed by the Committee Chairman with concurrence from the Basileus of Psi Alpha Chapter. The awards selection sub-committee will be composed of a selection subcommittee chairman, with no more than 7 members with no less than 3 in order to provide an odd number of members in the voting process. Awards selection sub-committee members must attend a mandatory nomination packet evaluation training session (as an entire team). All members will review all packets submitted. Awards selection sub-committee members who are nominated for awards cannot evaluate and/or score their own packet. A scoring system of 1 to 5 will be utilized with 1 being the top score and 5 being the low score. If there is more than a 2 point evaluation difference between two award selection sub-committee members concerning a particular packet in a given category, that packet must be discussed further. The awards selection sub-committee will evaluate nominee packets based on the criteria associated with the category that the nominee is submitted in. Final selection tabulations with the exception of Man of the Year will be made by the awards selection sub-committee and names submitted to the subcommittee chairman and he will in turn provide the names to the Achievement Committee Chairman. Final selection tabulation for Man of the Year will be recorded by the awards sub-committee chairman and provided to the Achievement Week Committee Chairman. All non chapter member awardees will be notified by letter, as prepared by the Achievement Week Committee Chairman and invited to join us and be recognized at the Achievement Week Founders’ Banquet. A copy of the letter will be maintained by the Keeper of Records and Seal. A ticket will be provided for citizen awardees only (not brothers). Nomination Form The form is provided as part of this document at Enclosure 1. Instructions for completion and submission of the form are provided on the form. General rules for completing the form: The application must be typed with responses that are clear, concise, specific, and fully address the topic area. Please carefully read each question before responding. Do not include activities more than once. Enter the activity into the area that it most appropriately supports. Credit will only be given for one entry of an event or activity. All events and or activities listed must be dated reflecting the year of the event or activity. Events or activities that are not dated will not be considered in the evaluation. 6 Specific and clearly marked supporting data may be attached to support any section. The total of all supporting data for the nomination is limited to four (4) pages (single-sided). Attached documentation must address a specific section and should be clearly labeled to indicate the section that this material supports. If it cannot be clearly determined, this information will not be considered. Applications will not be accepted without the submitters name, signature, and phone number provided at Enclosure 2. This excludes nonmembers who should be in good standing in their community. Brothers nominated must be in good standing with the Fraternity. Check the category for award consideration.
