During my internship with General Electric Transportation at their Grain Valley Missouri facility last summer, I developed a strong affection for the company. Although working with G.E. Transportation was a wonderful experience, I realize that my career goals are more business orientated than they are engineering manufacturing. Thus, my manager recommended that I look into getting an internship with G.E. Energy for this upcoming summer. My manager and I both believe that I would make an excellent addition to your team as I have a strong background in finance, and I have gained the necessary skills to work in a financial field during my last internship. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to move from a Cameroon to the United States of America. I take this opportunity to fulfill my dreams very seriously, and hope to one day be able to help other children from Third World countries have a similar opportunity as myself. Since my arrival to the United States, I have always strived to go beyond what is expected from me; from being a varsity soccer player during my freshman year, being named President of the National Society of Black Engineers my sophomore year, and currently, being the treasurer of the prestigious Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Inc., I have learned so much from every aspect of my life, which have made me the man I am today. Furthermore, my ability to learn fast quickly, and to exceed others’ expectations of me are the qualities which will make me a great addition to your team. Aside of my some of my personal attributes, my major requires me to take courses such as macroeconomics, public speaking, and technical writing and effective speech through which I enhanced my organizational, communicational, and writing skills. During my time at G.E. Transportation, I assisted my manager in making negotiations with customers from Australia and Canada to successfully get a project contract with them. I also helped my manager develop financial proposals for potential projects. This experience enabled me to become more than familiar with the G.E. financial negotiation methods. I was also a member of the ISO team, from which I learned G.E.’s rules, regulations, and procedures. This makes me an ideal candidate for the position, especially I will not need to be trained on ISO protocols. I am excited about the summer internship position and the ability to help your company succeed. More information regarding my education and experiences are included in the attached resume. I thank you in advance for your time. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I can be contacted anytime at (717) 659-8665 or email me at psn5019@psu.edu. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in further detail, and I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Patrick Nguepdo PATRICK S. After reading about the job’s duties and researching your company further, I was pleased to learn how dedicated the Military Aircraft branch of Boeing is to improving national security by working closely with the government in creating sophisticated military planes to help our soldiers keep this country safe. I am certain that the skills I have acquired during my two internships with General Electric (G.E.) and the education I received at The Pennsylvania State University make me very qualified for this position. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to move from a Cameroon to the United States of America. I take this opportunity to fulfill my dreams very seriously, and hope to one day be able to help other children from Third World countries have a similar opportunity as myself. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in further detail, and I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Patrick Nguepdo DATE: January 6th, 2012 TO: Paul Zajac FROM: Patrick Stephane Nguepdo SUBJECT: Job Application Package Purpose The purpose of this cover memo is to make it easier to understand, evaluate, and read the resumes and cover letters for each of the two jobs I chose: Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Engineer at Boeing Military Aircraft, and Summer Analyst Intern at General Electric (GE) Energy. Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Engineer at Boeing Military Aircraft – Saint Louis, MO The Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Design Integration team is seeking an experienced Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineer to perform analysis, concept development, requirements development, design implementation, and verification tasks on multiple programs. Since my area of study is more geared toward power system, circuitry and, magnetism, I was instantly drawn to this job opening and have created a resume and cover letter to apply for this position. Job Description According to the job posting, the primary responsibilities include E3 identification, analysis, allocation, coordination and verification for electrical and mechanical systems. Additionally, the E3 is looking for someone who works effectively in groups, by establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others that help them feel valued, appreciated, and included in discussions. The candidates are expected to have at least one year of E3 experience and process knowledge. Furthermore, the competencies section in the application states that ideal candidates must possess great communication skills. They must be able to follow a logical sequence when communicating, keep the audience engaged through use of techniques such as analogies, illustration, or humor. The relevant courses section of my resume highlight all the communication courses I have taken, showing the employers that my communication skills will match their expectations. Audience Analysis Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space, and security systems. As mentioned in my cover letter, the Military Aircraft branch of Boeing is dedicated to improving national security by working closely with the government in creating sophisticated military planes to help our soldiers keep this country safe. In addition to designing, producing, modifying, and supporting fighters, bombers, transports, rotorcraft, aerial refuelers, missiles, munitions, and spacecraft for military, civil, and commercial use, Boeing Defensive System (BDS) is developing enhanced capabilities through network-enabled solutions, communications and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance technologies. BDS supports the U.S. government as a system integrator on several programs of national significance, including NASA's International Space Station, and the Missile Defense Agency's Ground-based Midcourse Defense program. My primary career goal is to eventually work for the government, namely the CIA, and BDS is closely aligned with my future goals. Due to the size of the company, it is safe to assume that the job posting emphasizes a need for a candidate who works effectively in groups, is considerate of others’ opinions, and is accepting of the vast diversity of the company. My resume highlights that I am trilingual, which signifies that I am from a diverse background. Although the job posting does not mention the person responsible for hiring interns, it will likely be a representative of Human Resources (HR). I made this assumption because when I was working with G.E., which is as big of a company as Boeing is, HR were the people in charge of recruiting and hiring. Rhetorical Analysis Due to the fact that Boeing is as big of a company as G.E., I made sure to include my two internships at G.E. so the recruiters will know I have experience working in a big company. In addition to that, the job duties for each internship highlight some of the skills an ideal candidate for this E3 position must possess. “Worked with a team of engineers in designing propellers for commercial planes” tells the employers that I can effectively work with a group of people. “Received extensive training in electromagnetism” shows my expertise in electromagnetism. The candidate is required to possess good communication and presentation skills. My resume shows that I am proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint which are the most common software’s used to make a good presentation. In the third paragraph of my cover letter, I explain how I was able to creating an Excel file with useful information, which makes the employers aware of my creativity and my ability to think outside the box to increase the efficiency of the company. I chose to eliminate certain experiences I have such as working for Wal-Mart for three years because the job duties I performed while at Wal-Mart were not relevant to the job duties or skills required for this job posting. Although stating that I worked at Wal-Mart for three years may have showed the employers that I am not a quitter, I figured the two successive internships at G.E. were more relevant to the positions, and better highlighted my experience in the field. Summer Analyst Intern at General Electric (GE) Energy - Findlay, OH The energy investment arm of G.E. Energy is looking for an engineer student who would like to have a hands-on experience in their field of study by working as summer analysts for a ten week internship. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual interested in the energy sector. Since finding a new source of energy is one of the main priorities for engineers and researchers, I created a resume and cover letter to apply for this position. Job Description According to the job posting, the position’s responsibilities include: analyzing and developing financial models and projections, conducting industry and company research and analysis, perform asset analysis, primary and secondary account management of debt and equity transaction, and assisting in the underwriting of new transactions. In addition, the ideal candidate must be proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, be able to work as part of a diverse team, and have strong analytical skills. Audience Analysis General Electric is an American multinational corporation which operates in multiple segments including Energy, Transportation, Aviation, etc. Each segment behaves as a corporation of their own. G.E. Energy Finance Services experts invest globally across the capital spectrum in essential, long-lived, and capital-intensive energy assets that meets the world’s energy needs. It is because of G.E. Energy’s passion for helping the world meet its energy need that I want to be a member of this team. I was fortunate enough to have an internship with G.E. Transportation last summer, which is why I know that Human Resources are responsible of recruiting employees for all G.E. businesses. Rhetorical Analysis G.E. is one of the world’s top companies. Since I had the opportunity to work with them last summer, I made sure to include it in my resume to show the recruiter for this job posting that I have experience working for G.E. I mentioned that I was a “Member of the internal audit ISO team which acquainted me to ISO qualities, policies and procedures that all GE businesses are guided by” to show the recruiters that I am familiar with G.E.’s protocols and procedures, and by hiring me they will be saving money because I will not need additional training on the rules and regulations of the company. I also mentioned this in my cover letter because I know that typically, companies spend a lot of time and money training new employees. At the beginning of my cover letter, I mentioned my manager from G.E. Transportation because I want the recruiters to get in contact with him so he can tell them how wonderful of a job I did during my time in his facility last summer. I put his contact information on the reference page. The job advertisement says they are looking for individuals who are “highly motivated”. The portion of my cover letter which talks about me coming from a third world country and working hard to achieve my goals, shows that I am highly motivated to achieve my goals in life. It also shows how much of a hard worker I am. The requirements for this job position include good money management, good communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft software, and being able to work in a diverse background. My resume essentially shows how I possess those qualities. My efficiency in Microsoft software is mentioned under the computer skills section. My position as treasurer of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. shows that I have experience with managing financial transactions for an organization. The relevant courses show the recruiter that I have been taught about the basics of finance and effective communication. Lastly, the fact that I am trilingual again shows that I have a diverse background, and therefore I will have no problem working with people from other backgrounds. Aside of working at Wal-Mart, another experience I omitted to put on my resume are the research projects I have conducted while I was at school. This could have been good to show recruiters that I have experience doing research, since one of the responsibilities for this position is conducting researches. However, I omitted it because most of the research I conducted was during high school. Differences in the Jobs There was a very distinct difference amount these two jobs. One was for a full time position while the other one was just an internship. Although both jobs were meant for engineers, one was geared more towards manufacturing while the other was geared towards finance and business management. The job posting for Boeing was much more detailed than the one for G.E. However, the length and repetitiveness of the Boeing advertisement could be considered a poor form of communication or advertisement.
