LEARNING ACTIVITIES
INTROTask Students have completed work on the conditions in industrial cities and read the booklet on John Merrick in
previous lessons.






Students must write an obituary about the life of John Merrick and include details about how bad living conditions
are for the Working Class.
Define what is meant by obituary and explain what is needed to make a sympathetic obituary.
ACTIVITY - Give students 5 minutes to brainstorm ideas about what content they are going to include in
their obituary. Go over as a class discussion and write ideas on the board. A list is needed of the main
points of John Merrick’s life and the main features of living conditions of the Working Class.
Students Need pages 40-45 of ‘Minds and Machines’ book + Resource ‘The Elephant Man’.
Give students a target of what content they must have included in their piece of writing by the end of the
lesson.
Circulate and check what has been done.
CONCLUSION – Read over some of the students work to the class as exemplars of quality work
