EE101 Skeleton Lab Outline (Revised 2)
Lab #1: Batteries, Power Supplies, and Resistors
Platform: breadboard, resistors, batteries
 Resistor color code
 Dry cell batteries and bench power supply
 Using DMM to measure voltage and resistance
 Nominal values vs. actual measured values
 Parallel and series resistor combinations
 Using DMM to analyze voltage divider circuits
Lab #2: Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s Circuit Laws
Platform: breadboard, potentiometer from parts kit
 KVL and KCL
 Measuring current
 Potentiometers
 Start talking about circuit board assembly methods: practice component placement and
hand soldering; INSTALL Solder steps 1 and 2 (socket and power system)
Lab #3: AC Signals and the Oscilloscope
Platform: breadboards, resistors, capacitors
 Using the oscilloscope: voltage vs. time graph
 Comparing scope and DMM for DC voltage measurements (or some other introductory
step)
 Function generator: various AC signal types
 Capacitors; terminal characteristics and types
 Making a simple RC circuit measurement (compare input and output)
 Intro to frequency response
 INSTALL Solder steps 3 and 4 (resistor packs, transistors, buttons, pot, headers)
Lab #4: Digital Signals
Platform: breadboards, begin using robot kits
 Using the oscilloscope: practice and reinforcement of skills
 Pulse waveform, frequency and duty cycle
 LEDs: flashing
 4-digit 7-segment display
 INSTALL Solder steps 5 and 6 (display resistors, display, dip switches, LEDs)
Lab #5: Robot Board Sub-System Testing
 Finish circuit soldering (mostly do during open lab time)
 Continuity testing, solder joint evaluation
 Voltage regulator
 Transistors as electronic switches; terminal voltages and currents
 Pushbuttons and LEDs
 Start chassis assembly (Part Two)

Lab #6: Introduction to MATLAB
(Similar to existing EE101 lab #6)
 Also, do basic chassis assembly at home or during open lab time
Lab #7: Microcontroller and Motor Testing
 Install and boot pre-programmed microcontroller
 Observe signals with the oscilloscope, measure frequency and duty cycle
 LED flash
 Arrange motor rotation and verify behavior
Lab Exam
Lab #8: A/D Converter and ECEbot Bumpers
 A/D converter
 Build contact switches (bumpers)
 System demos
Lab #9: Matlab for problem solving
 Solving simultaneous equations
 Representing circuits and symbols
Lab #10: Control and Motion Sequencing
 Contact switches (bumpers) to change direction
 Motion sequencing
Lab #11: Controls and sequence programming (cont.)
 Motion sequencing contest
