After many many years of hard work and dedication, the backbone of the merrylands rugby club Jen and Skids had decided to move on to greener pastures. I was kind of forced into taking up the role of club president. This seemed a bit daunting at first as the club has had many successful years and I wasn't sure where we were headed. I would personally like to thank both Jen and skids for their outstanding contribution towards this club, and remember although you may be 3.5hrs away from us you are and always will be welcome back to merrylands. Rugby: season 2014 we were forced into division 6 which was unfamiliar territory for all of us and we didn't know what to expect. We were playing against teams that we had never played against before and we enjoyed the various bus trips across to the north side. To go through the rounds and only managing to lose 1 game was an exceptional achievement in itself. To then cruise through the 2 semis was really pretty impressive and progress to the grand final was what we set out to do. To win the MELDRUM cup in horrendous conditions was another fantastic achievement for the WOLFPACK. The core French,Todd,Davis,Jim,Nash,Parker,Joe,Luke,Josh,Arana,Drew,Fly The drifters Briggs,Richie,Franky,Vili,Bicks,Irish,Jade The newbies Simon,Mike,Blair,Ray,Eddie, And anybody else who donned on a jersey this season I thank you all. Miss P's day: By far my favorite day of the season. Once again the club rallied together to honor the queen of our club in its annual cancer fundraiser. We managed to raise over $3000 for the cancer council ( something we don't have to do but as a club choose to ) Congratulations to all involved especially Nash who absolutely thrives on it. Raffles: as you all know the club relies on the money we take from Thursday and Saturday night 50 weeks a year. Benny's summer roster system worked a treat and to French, Josh, Irish, James, Jose, Nash, Parker and all those who helped Pete, Lukey, Sandy and myself I thank you. After all, doing the raffles is an easy job after a couple of schooners. Canteen: without a doubt we run the best canteen in subbies rugby. Rob and Anne have been with the club ( no ties ) for decades now and I still don't know why they keep coming back but they do. Then you throw in Sandy and they make an awesome team with everything running to clockwork. A special mention goes to Irene for chipping in whenever help is needed. Here's hoping you all are back next season to continue your fantastic efforts. Sponsors: it's extremely difficult to run a sporting club without the support of sponsors. Thanks to Neal's driving school for their continued support over the years. Our major sponsor the COOLIBAH hotel, Gary and the staff thank you for your wonderful hospitality and we look forward to your continuing support for many years to come. Bus drivers: to Pete Mac, Wayne, Levi, Pete schofield you would not believe how much I appreciated your efforts this year carting these grubs to and from the games. Supporters: I would like to thanks all our supporters, wifes, girlfriends, partners and friends in supporting us on all our away and home games it is much appreciated. Coaches: Kev and Benny congratulations on a successful season and taking us all the way to grand final victory.A job well done. Committee members: Thanks to all our committee members this year it has been a tuff year as we were all learning on how to run it,but i think we bluffed our way through and came out of it ok. Hope to see yous all on the committee doing the same roles as we all done a great job. I would like to say a big thank you to Wayne and Irene for taking home the jerseys every week without complaining, also doing all the little jobs around the club that nobody else likes doing, taking home some of the drunks after some of our fundraising nights and always being the last to leave the club house after the games and events.Much appreciated. Peter Mac the back bone of the club teaching us the ropes on how to run a rugby club.Being there week in and week out running the water for all the grubs playing rugby, strapping the guys ,Putting up with all my phone calls throughout the season.Doing the raffles every fortnight. Benny: definitely the heart and soul of the club.Your efforts and enthusiasm in everything you do,such as match reports, web site, bus hire, all the behind the scenes jobs, organising the end of season trips and of cause playing rugby like the machine that you are. Finally i would like to thank Sandy and my 3 kids for putting up with taking me to rugby every week and putting up with the late nights, doing the raffles every fortnight. The hard work you put into the canteen and the fundraising night and also being the last to leave. Wolf pack for life FULLY Secretary’s Report Well what a year this has been, being given the opportunity to request playing in a 2 team competition and not being accepted and having to play in the one team Meldrum Cup competition It was clear from the outset that we were going to go well given some of the teams we played were not at our standard. It was particularly obvious that we went almost undefeated except for Terry Hills who caught us on the hop I really want to take my hat off to Ben who did his best to secure Halligan Cup games but it was disappointing that we couldn’t get more games for our 2nds. I am really glad that our 2nds players to a great extent stuck around and supported us even though they didn’t get many games, Drew, Jose, Irish and others are true club men and we are looking forward to a two team competition next year where you will all get a run every week We had a sad moment with the passing of Nicko, he was an occasional player with us who also struggled to stay out of trouble but when he was on the field ran hard and tried his best. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family I also enjoyed the social side of the competition this year and I think you all have enjoyed our bus trips, particularly seeing Todd and me in tights! This has been my first year as Secretary and I hope you all appreciate the extra effort I put into making sure that all the minutes of every meeting were done, that all communications with subbies was coordinated, actually like a true manager I delegated most of these duties to my father, keep up the good work dad! I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the supporters of our club this year, particularly the Ditfort family for being there every week, for Kevin providing us inspiration and direction and all the other supporters and friends that helped us this year This may be my last year with the club because as you may know I have been made an offer from another club in the eastern suburbs and this time the offer is too good to refuse Yours in rugby James Macklin Secretary 1st Grade Coaches Report 2013 Season I would like to thank the committee for giving me the opportunity to co-coach the Wolves with Ben this year. The year started off with a bus trip to Jen and Skid’s motel down in Jugiong where we took part in a seven tournament. We didn’t do too badly with only a handful of players. We made the semis but got knocked out. We also drank plenty of grog and got to know a lot more about each other. Over all a good bonding trip. Thanks Pete for driving the bus and thanks Jen and Skids for their hospitality. It was a great way to kick off the season. This year we had our good times and our bad times and on more than one occasion we failed to field a full strength side. But in the true spirit of the Wolves the boys never shirked their responsibilities. The game at Terry Hills comes to mind as one we could have taken an easy route but we did what was right by our opposition. Ben and I would like to thank each and every player involved in the side this year, especially the senior players who led from the front showing skill, toughness and composure under pressure. Thanks fellas It’s been an amazing year for Ben and I and one we’ll never forget. The training was tough and sometimes a bit too long but it paid off in the long run. First winning the minor premiership, then knocking out rivals Fairvale to make the Grand Final and ultimately beating Clovelly in atrocious conditions to claim the major prize. This will stay with us forever. Thanks again fellas. I’d also like to take the time to thank everyone involved in the club, not just the committee but the ladies and gents who looked after the canteen, the BBQ, the grounds and those that ran raffles. Without the likes of Sandy, the Ditfords and the Sherwood’s there would be no club. Also a big thank you to our sponsors, in particular the Coolibah Hotel. In finishing, I believe we need to be in a 2 or 3 team comp next year so please, everyone, keep an eye out for potential recruits - get behind the Wolves! The term “legend” gets thrown around pretty easily these days but there really is no better word to describe Mick Parker than legend. Lots of people use lots of other words to describe him like prick, grub, machine, maggot, maniac, twit, weapon, goose, clown and c@#t but most would agree, love him or hate him, he is a legend. An absolute one of a kind. Mick Parker came to the club back in 1996 when he was about 12 years old. He’s old man played at the Wolves as did one of his school teachers, fellow 300 gamer Kenny “No Mistakes” Bladwell. Back then Mick was a quiet, fat, little ball boy that nobody thought much of. If you know him now it’s pretty hard to imagine but he was a real porker back then, full of baby fat. A real rolly polly kid. Around 2001, when Mick was only 15 years old (and still very much sober) he decided he would play a few games for the Wolves. Stop and consider that for a moment. It is one thing to play senior rugby at 15 if you’re a bit of a monster for your age. To play senior rugby at 15 when you’re only Parkers size is incredible. Unheard of. That said he didn’t really set the place on fire. He banged around in the lower grades for a couple of years and also played junior league for Guilford which, in the words of his long-time partner in crime Nash Steward “he wasn’t much good at” Then, in 2005 Mick had a few friends come play for the Wolves like Nash Steward and the Parsons boys, so Mick decided it was time to give rugby a proper run. Mick started losing weight and getting fit. Really fit. Super fit. In fact in fact I recall at the start of the 2006 season our coach Cole Newman had us do the famous beep test so we could all get a gauge on how far along we were. Slowly each player dropped off. The last person that had kept up with Mick gave up half way through level 11. Mick kept going and barely looked to have raised a sweat. Mick finally decided he had had enough half way through level 17. He then started hassling everyone for a game of touch. In the space of about a season Mick went from a tubby little try hard to one of the most hated, feared, respected, aggressive and above all super effective open side flankers Merrylands and Subbies rugby had ever seen. Several long serving players and officials including myself, James Macklin, Michael Pinkerton and Mark “Skids” Milner all wish to be put on record as saying Mick was/is THE best open side flanker they had every played with or against. It was around this period that Mick really started racking up the number of games he played. From 2005 to 2008 the Wolves were in the 3 team comp and, as is Merrylands tradition, we were always a little short of players for away games. Mick would regularly walk onto the pitch for the start of 3rd grade and not leave the playing field till the full time whistle was blown in 1 st grade. And he didn’t just make up the numbers. On dozens of occasions Mick would play in the centres or fullback in 3rds, get man of the match then play 2nd grade. He would finish 2nds and just stay on the field for firsts and he would win the players player award in first grade. Easily. He was a machine. In one 20 round season (2007 I think) Mick played more than 50 games! And he pretty much never got injured. Whether the Wolves were playing a pack of Tongan goons like Liverpool or a smart, tough school side like UWSH, Mick would be in their faces, stealing ball, making cover tackles or linking up with the backs and scoring tries in the corner, all the while yelling and spitting a level of anger and fury at the opposition that both frightened and infuriated any team the Wolves played. He was universally hated and respected by every side he has ever played against. In the words of Nash Steward “he is like a pitbull on heat. An absolute f@#kn machine” On one occasion, after the Wolves had earned an upset win against the top of the table UWSH, Pete Macklin and myself walked into the packed Uni bar to get a drink. We happened to be standing next to the UWSH captain, coach and several senior players. Talk amongst the UWSH boys was centred on why they had lost that day. Several theories were being thrown about before the UWSH number 8 and captain (Brad I think his name was) abruptly said “it was that f@#kn open side flanker. He’s a c@#t. He’s an annoying little c@#t. I hate him. He gets under my skin. I wanna kill that little prick” On another occasion in about 2011, Merrylands travelled over to the east to play Waverly. Once again the Wolves were short a few players and so Mick ended up paying all 4 grades that day. At the post match function at a very packed Waverly bowling club, Mick was called up to accept his award for man of the match in 2nd grade. The entire place erupted into cacophony of boos and hisses. Mick had a huge smile stretched across his face. He climbed up onto the stage, skulled his beer, showed the crowd his middle figure, grabbed the microphone and told the assembled masses “you can all f@#k off” As me made his way back through the crowd several Waverly players patted him on the back. Classic Micky P stuff. So far in his Merrylands career Mick has won just about every award the Wolves can give. He has won players player on about a billion occasions. He has won player of the year and forward of the year. I think he has also holds the record for the most number of yellow cards in a season. Probably Micks greatest achievement on the rugby pitch so far was the 2008 and 2009 seasons. In 2008 the Wolves won all 3 grades and Mick was THE best forward in the club. He was probably the best forward in the comp. In 2009 Mick was a member of the greatest mongrel back row I’ve ever seen. Anywhere. Mick played openside with Levi Sciascia playing #8 (yes Levi used to be a loosy) and Nate NgmetuaSmith. The three of them were like peas in a pod and got to calling each other “maggot”. There is no doubt in my mind that without Mick and his two fellow “maggots” the Wolves would not have won the title that year. To do Mick justice I must speak about a few things other than just playing rugby. When it comes to letting his hair down, no body (other than maybe Nash) does it quite like Micky P. When he first turned 18 Mick didn’t drink. He would come to the pub and sit around talking shit all night (still in his playing gear, still with his strapping on and still covered in mud) but he refused to drink. But it was long before he forgot the sober nonsense and got to drinking. I have been on a few end of season trips with Mick and the guy drinks the way he plays rugby. Like a machine. On the trip up to Byron Bay Mick pretty much didn’t stop, he basically didn’t sleep. And when he did he would get up, down a “breakfast of champions” and get straight back in to it. And he somehow managed to look fresh as a daisy. I’m not sure how P.J’s and the Coolibah feel about Parker. On one hand he is great for business, on the other he is a headache for bar and security staff. I have seen Mick ball slap a bouncer without getting kicked out. I have seen him stand at the top of the stairs and yell out to some random guy that just walked in “hey nice shoes faggot” and not get kicked out. According to Nash Steward “he is my Mona Lisa. My protégé. I have endless memories of nights out with the guy that will scar me for life” The last thing I need to talk about is Mick as a friend. All we all have plenty of people we can call friend, most of us have very few friends that we know, without fail, we can rely on. If Mick can help, he will. If I call mick and ask him for a favour he never whinges, never complains. He just says “no probs mate for sure” Nobody quite understands how deep Micks heart is the way Nash Steward knows so I will leave the rest up to Nash…. ”Parker is a truly great mate who I hold very close to my heart. Best friend for life. He has bailed me out of jail a few times, he has let me live with him when I was stuck. It is truly a pleasure to share my life with him. He is an absolute champion” Mick Parker you’re a legend Benjamin Davis – Merrylands Rugby Vice President The Helen Fraser Memorial Award Helen “Mrs P” Fraser embodied the true definition of a Merrylands Rugby Club stalwart. From her first days at the club supporting her husband Steve Parker, through to Michael playing when he was just 16, Helen’s commitment has been unwavering. She could always be relied on to organise or assist in functions, and was definitely the biggest supporter at all games – taking on the arduous task of managing scoresheets on the sideline, and also becoming Vice-President. Sadly taken from us at far too young an age, Helen has left behind a spirit that it is important for our club to carry into every game. This award recognizes someone from the club that not only plays on the field, but contributes to the running of the club and supporting it fully. The 2014 Helen Fraser Memorial Award goes to Luke Schofield. Luke does loads of work for the club behind the scenes, looking after the financial running of the club. Rodney "Ossie" Osborne had progressed through the ranks of Merrylands Juniors before joining the senior side in 1970. The Rodney Osborne Memorial Trophy is awarded to the First Grade Team. Bob Henderson joined the Club in the latter stages of it's initial year in the Suburban Rugby competition and later coached the side for several seasons. The Bob Henderson Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Second grade team. The Osborne Trophy has been in the Club since it's inception when Merrylands had just one team. The Henderson Trophy, however, was originally awarded by the Apex Batteries Business Houses team for which Bob had also played. With their demise at the end of 1974 coinciding with the expansion of Merrylands to two teams the following year, the trophy was incorporated into our Club. In 1995 the Club was elevated the Fourth Division with a third grade team and the Junior Club presented us with a Shield to allow a similar award to be made to our lowest grade team. Since 1995 it has been awarded to the Third Grade team. These trophies are most definitely not awarded for star performance. Their intention is to honour the players who strive to give that extra bit, over and above themselves, for the team. One point is awarded in each game and tallied at the end of the season for the presentation. RODNEY OSBORNE MEMORIAL TROPHY 1st XV 1973 R. Ridley 1975 J. It was to be an annual award given to the person deemed by the members to have made the greatest contribution to the effective operation of the Club during that year. Selection was to be by a secret ballot of the members at the end of each Rugby season by nominating on a 3-2-1 basis, the person they felt was most deserving of this award. Votes were then to be collated by a scrutineer, appointed by the Committee, and the announcement and presentation made at the Annual Presentation Night. At an Extra-ordinary General meeting of the Club in early 1994, following the tragic passing of the Secretary of the Club, Mr Maurie Whittaker. The Clubman Trophy was to be inscribed and dedicated to the memory of Maurie Whittaker in recognition of his enormous contribution to the Merrylands Club during his 23 year association. He went up to PJ’s more than anyone else and was always on the piss when we weren’t playing. Special Mentions Parker – The angry kid put in another great effort this year, most notably at the away game against Manly Savers. Despite being picked in the side Parker took one for the team and got blind drunk and stayed on the sideline where he added his considerable talents to the icy atmosphere on the sidelines. Luke Schofield – He isn’t showy, he isn’t loud, but he is always there. Coach Kevi – Kevi did his best on the pre-season tour to Jugiong to keep up with the lads. But alas the Wolves coach took off too early and fell asleep at 7.30. Lauri O’Neil – Misses James Macklin is becoming such a regular down the Cooli on a Saturday night that even Kevi thinks she may have a problem Gut of the Year This is a tough one this year. As far as increase in size is concerned then it’s a toss up between Parker and Irish. It’s hard to go passed Parker’s massive tits. Irish does pretty well hiding his girth it but most of us can see what’s happening. Best Supporter Irene Ditford and Marry Ngawini - Just about every week these two lovely ladies are there cheering the lads on and never miss a bus trip. Special mention must go to Brian Davis, Reece Davis and Alan Davis as well as Ex Brown, Con Brown and Tony Tuara for their incredible effort on grand final day. It probably isn’t going too far to say the Wolves may not have won so comfortably if it wasn’t for their collective, relentless hassling and name calling of every Clovelly player that came within ear shot, especially that pork chop #16 hooker of theirs. Injury of the Year Benjamin Davis and his broken arm. The big guy claims he did it trying to swinging arm someone but rumour has it he tried to steal one of Luke Schofield’s chips and suffered the consequences. Trainer of the Year Tim French - When Coach Ben posted on facebook that training was cancelled due to heavy rain, Mr French “liked” the comment. Mystery of the Year What really is Rey’s name and how do you spell it? Did Blare really go on holidays for the GF or was he a little scared? Will Richie Ngawini ever actually admit that he plays rugby? What did that clown Clovelly #16 actually say to Levi? There is a rumour it may have been an invite to play for a certain eastern suburbs team next year. Quotes “No one in my family has red hair” Matthew Briggs “Bra, I’m the Aboriginal Rhino” Todd Parsons after scoring in the GF “Bro, I folded him like a deck chair” Nash Steward “Is training over yet? I’ve got a dick to pull” Tim French “That Harry guy from Subbies is a f@#kwit. So is that Tim guy from Subbies. They’re all a pack of f@#kwits” Jason Fulwood sounding more and more like a Merrylands president. “Coach, I’ll be running late. I’ve got to clean my girlfriend’s house” James Macklin “It’s 14 points to 10. You’re only just up!” Kevin Corbet at the Harden 7’s. The score was actually 24 to 10. “Actually my name is Rey” Rey Akbhar after spending he’s first few weeks at the club being called Ryan, Brian, Steve, Clint and Geoff by various people including Kevin, Benjamin and Nash. “Bro that was just the piss talking!” Villi to Benjamin after Jason told Ben was Villi serious about coaching next year. “C@#t, the only thing you can fold is washing” Micky P to James after Nash congratulated James on folding the Clovelly fly half “That c@#t couldn’t catch a cold” Micky P about Ben Davis “You’re mentally weak” Micky P to Ben Davis “You’re a f@#king dog Davis” Micky P to Ben Davis “S@#t dick” Micky P to Ben Davis “S@#t tits!” Jason Fulwood to Micky P “Sorry George Pell, but I wont get down on my knees for you” Micky P to ref after ref asked to check his boots “He is funny for a fat chick” Tim French about Micky P
