June 2015 Jeanne Clore Happy Birthday Resident of the Month June 2015 Birthstone: Pearl Flower: Rose Jeanne was born in Albion, Michigan on November 29, 1918. Her parents were Harry and Elizabeth Richards. Her dad was an auto dealer first selling Oaklands and buggy whips prior to having a Ford, Mercury, Lincoln dealership for 56 years. Her mother was a pianist and vocalist traveling the country in a quartet on the Chautauqua circuit. Jeanne had two brothers and one sister. They called her Beanie, being the youngest in her family. Attending school in Albion and graduating in 1936 from high school, Jeanne went on to Michigan State and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in home economics. Moving to Ann Arbor, Jeanne worked in customer service for Michigan Bell Telephone and Telegraph. It was there she met her future husband, Robert Clore who was a technician at the same company. They were married and Robert volunteered for the U.S. Signal Corps and was sent to the South Pacific. The couple had three sons, Robert, Jr., Richard and Daniel. During that time, the family moved to Grand Rapids then Ionia where her husband became a partner in the manufacturing business with his brother and brother-in-law. Jeanne was very involved with her sons and school activities, volunteering, playing bridge and golf. Her passion has always been cooking and making homemade bread. She also has a good sense of humor and played many tricks on her family such as exchanging a Rock Cornish Hen for a turkey one Thanksgiving. Needless to say her family was shocked when she brought it out! In addition, by mistake she gave frozen liver for her son’s Boy Scout Camping trip instead of hamburger. After that, she laughed until she cried every time she opened the freezer. Not knowing that she was drying her hair in her electric oven, a neighbor boy saw her in this position, ran to her side, pulled her back and yelled, “Mrs. Clore, don’t do it!” He was sure she had a gas range like his mom did. Jeanne has been a resident of Meadow Brook since December 2011 and has fit right in making many friends and enjoying her household. She plays Bingo, Bunco, attends church services, reading the daily newspaper and puzzles. She states, "I've really enjoyed being here, it's been so much fun for me." Congratulations, Jeanne! People born in the month of June focus their energies on intelligence and communication. They have a great sense of humor while being emotional and nurturing. They have keen imaginations and display a deep empathy and sensitivity to those they love. The great game of summer, baseball, was invented on June 12, 1839, by Abner Doubleday, or so it is commonly believed. In 1905, there was a great debate raging. Was baseball an American invention? Or did it come from an Engish game called “rounders”? A commission, led by ex-pitcher, baseball club executive, and sporting goods magnate Albert Spalding, was created to find the real answer. With little proof, Spalding decided that the game was American and had been invented by Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York. Doubleday had invented the word “baseball,” drew a diamond, and made notes of all the positions and rules. Unfortunately, evidence shows that Doubleday had never in his life set foot in Cooperstown. Looks like Spalding committed an error. June 2015 Stick It to Him It is only fitting that Father’s Day (Sunday, June 21) falls on the same weekend as the annual Duct Tape Days. After all, what dad is ever without this most trusted tool? Duct tape was first invented by the Johnson & Johnson Company during World War II. The tape was made from a rubber-based adhesive mounted onto duck canvas, which made it both incredibly sticky and waterproof. The original name for this tape was, in fact, “duck tape.” It earned the name “duct tape” because it was used effectively to connect heating and air conditioning ducts. Duct tape now has hundreds of other uses. Special versions of this tape were known to be used during the Vietnam War to repair helicopter rotor blades. During the 1970 Apollo 13 mission, astronauts used duct tape to repair a carbon dioxide filter. Without this filter, the crew would have perished. Useful for the temporary repair of a broken car light or hole in your canoe, others have taken their love of duct tape even as far as adhering annoying friends to the wall. When it comes to duct tape, it seems that there is no end to its uses. They jump and grab it They think it's a treat. The children have a fishing day. They come with line and hook And put bait on the hook And just wait and Look. "A Big One" a child shouts! "Daddy, I have caught a trout!" So that's the story of the fishing pond. A beautiful sight to see So I say again Meadow Brook is a wonderful place to be. By: Florence Erdmann – May 2014 Meadow Brook Resident Reprinted with Permission June 22 is Judy Garland Day, a day honoring the woman who has been named one of the ten greatest female stars in the history of entertainment. For many, Judy Garland will always remain the sixteenyear-old Dorothy from the 1939 smash-hit The Wizard of Oz. Her rendition of the song “Over the Rainbow” will never be forgotten. The Wizard of Oz was only the beginning. Judy Garland went on to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, as well as Grammy Awards and even a Tony Award. Her talents launched her into the elite of performers and for that reason she will always be remembered as “Miss Show Business.” June 2015 4541 South M-88 Highway Bellaire, MI 49615 INDEPENDENT SENIOR LIVING ONE BEDROOM APARTMENTS Monthly rentals from $500.00-$585.00 Heat & water included Laundry Facilities Community Room Antrim County Transportation Available Close to Commission on Aging For more information, contact CHERYL HAVERSTOCK 231 533-8661 X 161 mbresidents@hotmail.com Stay connected! As directed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, each product used in nursing homes must be evaluated to determine if they are hazardous. Certain chemicals may present a health hazard if exposure could result in acute or chronic adverse health effects. These chemicals vary from dish soap, to laundry soap, to specific cleaners, cosmetics, and other substances used within the confines of our home. By law, each product must have an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) sheet outlining details of the product itself. Items which are seemingly harmless have the potential to make someone very ill, therefore each product is given a file number and revision number so that if any of these products are accidentally ingested, we would be able to administer first aid and provide appropriate toxicology and health information to emergency personnel. With that said, we must pay close attention to each resident’s personal inventory. This is merely to protect the residents. Whether it be personal items or cosmetics, the Household Coordinator or Clinical Care Coordinator of the household must be notified if items are coming in from outside the facility so an SDS sheet can be looked up and kept on file for that particular product. If the product is deemed unsafe, it may have to be removed or we may have to keep the item locked up in the office for your resident to use with supervision as opposed to having them keep it in their room. Please help keep all of our residents safe! June 2015 Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility 4543 S.
