proton- part of the nucleus of an atom that has a positive charge
neutron- part of the nucleus of an atom that has no charge; it is neutral
electron-part of the atom that orbits the nucleus that has a negative charge
nucleus-the center part of an atom that contains protons and neutrons
element-a substance made of one type of atom
atomic number-the number of protons in an atom
atomic mass- most of the mass of an atom is found in the nucleus; number
of protons and neutrons
10. atomic symbol- the letters that represent the name of an element on the
periodic table
11. molecule-two or more atoms combined; they can be the same type if atom
12. compound- two or more elements chemically bonded
13. mixture- two substances that are physically mixed together
14. chemical change- the process when 2 or more substances chemically
combine, a new substance
15. physical change- the process when a substance changes in state or size,
or when if is mixed but not changed
16. pure substance- a type of matter that is either all one element or all one
compound
17. solution- formed when one substance is dissolved in another substance
18. suspension- the particles of both substances do not mix evenly
throughout; they are easily separated
19. density- the mass per unit volume of a substance at a particular
temperature and pressure. Density measures how tightly packed the
particles of a substance are.
20. solid- the molecules are grouped tightly together; they keep their shape
21. liquid- the molecules are grouped together but have room to move(flow);
take the shape of the container
22. gas- the molecules are spread out and move at high speeds; they take the
shape of the container
23. freezing point- the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid
to a solid
24. melting point- the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid
to a liquid
25. boiling point- the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid
to a gas
26. condensation- when a gas changes onto a liquid
27. evaporation- when a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
