Course Overview
To understand the basic structures and functions of the human body and to build a foundation for your more advanced future work. In addition, this course is to give students an idea of how to study for biology at the college level. This class is a 4 unit class that meets for 6 hours per week. Therefore, you should expect to spend 6 –8 hours per week outside of class studying.
Student Learning Objectives from course outline

Define and correctly use terminology in regard to structure and function of the human body.

Assess personal needs in regard to study time and methods, and accept responsibility for the learning process.

Work well independently and in small groups, demonstrating both self-direction and motivation, and contributing to group work.

Safely and efficiently set up and operate laboratory equipment.

Maintain organized lab materials with important information from class.
Format & General Information
The class is a lecture and lab format. The first 75 minutes will be lecture, followed by a 15 minute break, which is then followed by a lab. Though the lab is supposed to be hands-on, there will be some “background” information given for the lab.
Lecture examines anatomical structures and physiological processes. Lab will examine those structures and processes in the time allowed.
Come to class prepared. It is expected that you pre-read the laboratory exercises. This will give you a better understanding of what you will be doing. Also, attempt to keep up on the text readings. If you read before class, you will be better prepared to ask questions during class. Questions are encouraged, especially during lab time ! Also feel free to contact me with questions/concerns. If you are having a problem with the course in any way, please meet with me as soon as possible.
Need for Computer Access
I will post the lab manual, lab book answers, study guides, online quizzes, and lecture slides on a student “courseware” site called
Moodle . The site is at http://online.peralta.edu/fall2013. YOU
NEED TO ACCESS MOODLE TO PRINT OUT THE LABS. I will post copies of the lecture slides to

Moodle, and you can print them before class and use them to take notes. Laney College has a nice computer lab in F170; however, they ask that you only print the outline version of the files. The lab book I have posted is 200 pages long. The computer lab will not let you print it. It is a good deal to buy it, in color, from the bookstore.
Grading
There will be 4 lecture exams and 3 lab practicals (see schedule for dates). It is your responsibility to know when the exams are and to study accordingly.
Lecture exams will cover the material gone over in lecture. The lecture exams will consist of multiple choice questions. They are designed to give you experience in taking multiple-choice exams. Lecture tests will NOT be cumulative.
Review outlines for each exam will be posted on Moodle.
Lab practicals are identification and fill-the blank questions. There will be multiple stations throughout the room with a few questions at each station. I will ask you to identify structures on a model or photo of a histological slide. You will have 1 to 2 minutes at each station to answer the questions. This will test your ability to identify structures including: cells, parts of organs, or organ systems, and other things you were to observe in lab.
There is no open lab time for the Fall semester. Therefore, I recommend that after you complete the lab for a given day, you spend time looking at models from previous labs so that you will be prepared for the lab exam.
There will be no MAKE-UP exams if you miss a test. It is expected that you come on time on test days as well.
On-line Quizzes Throughout the semester, there will be 12 online quizzes posted to help prepare you for exams and to test your understanding of the material. You can take these quizzes as many times as you like up until the last class meeting.
Lab and participation: It is extremely important to make good use of your time in the lab. On the days of lab exams, I will ask you to bring your lab book to class to submit to me for grading. Each lab is worth 10 points, and labs will be graded based on completeness and accuracy.
If you are absent from lab, I will not give you credit for that activity; however, I still encourage you to complete that lab in the book to the best of your ability to prepare for the lab practical.
You will get graded on participation during lab. You will get “free” points for coming to lab and being an active learner. Active learner means looking at models and participating in activities during lab class. I will have you check out of lab when you leave. Please keep in mind that participation in the lab is mandatory. Therefore, please don't just sign the sign-in sheet and then leave. Lab time is the only time that you will get to work with the models I will use on the lab exam. Please note that students who do not make good use of their lab time tend to fail their lab exams. You must keep a clean lab area and common space, as well as keeping all equipment in its proper place and in good working order. Please throw all trash away and return models how you found them.
Extra credit: I only offer one opportunity for extra credit: this semester, you are fortunate in that we will have a tutor who will be available for the last 45 minutes of lab to serve as an extra source of help, and she will also be available to meet with students needing extra help after class until 1 p.m.
The tutor is a student who took my class in the Spring and received an A, so she knows what it takes to get an A in this class! Each time you attend and actively participate in a tutoring session after class for at least 20 minutes, you will receive a half point of extra credit added onto your final

grade. Since we have a total of 30 class meetings, if you attended all the tutoring sessions, you would receive 15 points of extra credit…enough to bring a C average up to an A!

Grades will be assigned as follows by a sliding scale: 90 % - 100 % A; 80-89 % B; 70 % - 79 % C;
60-69 % D; 0 % - 59 % F. A sliding scale is a scale where the top student in the class is assigned
100 %.

 Please let the instructor know as soon as possible (before the first test at the latest) any accommodation that you need access to that will help to improve your experience in this course. (note: DSPS normally gives me this information)
Rules

Please do not talk to each other during lecture or exams.

Treat all in the classroom with respect.

NO CELL PHONES AND NO TEXTING; TURN THEM OFF DURING LECTURE .

Please do not eat in the classroom ESPECIALLY THE LABORATORY! The preservative used for the rats, hearts, and kidneys is a deadly poison.

Please pick up after yourselves. Everyone is responsible for seeing that all common areas are clean.

Make the most of your experience. Keep up on the reading. Attend class regularly be on time.
If you are confused, come before or after class to get help.
Study Pointers

Read each chapter either before or after lecture. When we are done with a chapter, do the online quiz.

Make flashcards (especially for lab material) to quiz yourself.

Form study groups where everyone brings pre-made questions.

Use time in lab wisely. Be sure to look at all models and complete all activities in class.

Study nightly. Keep reviewing old material as well as looking at new material.

Use online resources. There are lots of tests and study material online. All it takes is a little effort to find it

Make flowcharts or outlines to help you organize larger topics into smaller more manageable topics.

Do not get behind. Keep up on your reading and lab work.

Try to explain what you learned or are studying to someone else.

Come in early to look at models and take pictures of models and use online resources too.
