Name __________________________ Section 01 03 04 Dear Parent/Student: Chemistry uses its own set of symbols to represent certain substances, somewhat like foreign languages that have their own alphabet and vocabulary. For students to be successful in chemistry they must memorize the names and symbols for elements and ions. We are providing a list of names and symbols that the students will need to know and use in Chemistry I. Students can expect to be quizzed over element names and symbols by the end of August. The polyatomic ion names and formulas should be mastered by mid September. After the initial quizzes, students will find that this material continues to appear in a variety of questions throughout the year. We hope you will take advantage of this early presentation of the list to build a study guide, develop practice sheets or possibly make flash cards so that you can begin to memorize this material as you have time over the summer. -SJ Chemistry teachers Elements (for now!) Names of elements are only capitalized at the beginning of a sentence. Elemental symbols are either a single capital letter or a capital letter followed by a lower case letter. There is never a period after the symbol. (AC students will be expected to know element names and symbols 1-88 and 92.) aluminum lead arsenic magnesium barium manganese bromine mercury calcium nickel carbon nitrogen chlorine oxygen chromium phosphorus cobalt platinum copper potassium fluorine silicon gold silver hydrogen sodium iodine tin iron zinc Chemistry 1 2008 Spiering Name __________________________ Chemistry 1 2008 Section 01 03 04 Spiering
