Course Description:
Study of structures and functions of the human body. Topics include cells, tissues, Integumentary
system, Skeletal system, Muscular system, and Nervous system.
This Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) course is designed as a prerequisite to a variety of allied health
programs (nursing, dental, pharmacy etc). It is necessary to successfully complete this course before
enrolling in BIO202.
Required Texts:
1. You must purchase a full length anatomy and physiology textbook. I suggest you get
one that was printed since 2008 and that is at least 1000 pages in length. The following
is a strongly recommended title:
o Human Anatomy and Physiology by Marieb and Hoehn 9th Ed.
 Note: All required readings will reference this textbook. If you use a
different book, you will need to determine the appropriate pages and
content to read.
o Please bring your textbook every lab.
2. Zao et al. PhysioEx 9.0 for A&P: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology
Lecture Materials:
All materials (except textbook readings) necessary to complete the lecture portion of the course
are provided on Canvas. The instructor is available for questions via email, discussions or
phone.
General Course Requirements and Policies:
1. This course requires enrollment in this virtual lecture and enrollment in a face to face
laboratory at Phoenix College.
2. It is expected that you will complete a minimum of six hours of online lecture
instruction per week, including but not limited to; completing assignments, viewing
powerpoints, reviewing materials, reading textbook chapters and other associated
coursework. Be sure to schedule regular hours for working on the course.
3. In addition, you are required to attend your in-person lab section twice each week.
Plan on staying the entire two hours and 50 minutes.
4. You must log into the course on a weekly basis throughout the term and respond to
the messages sent by your instructor.
5. You must complete the online “Getting Started Module” during the first week of the
term.
6. You must complete all the assignments in the course by the assigned due dates.
Refer to the course calendar for details.
7. You are responsible for knowing and following the information in this syllabus.
8. You are responsible for knowing College and District policies included in the College
Catalog and the Maricopa Community Colleges Student Guide.
9. You will be notified by the instructor of any changes in course requirements or
policies.
Grading:
1. The grade for the semester is determined by adding together all individual scores and
dividing by total possible point to arrive at a percent score.
Percent
89.5-100%
79.5-89.4%
69.5-79.4%
59.5-69.4%
59.4% or below
Letter Grade

2. Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments will not be given.
Attendance Policies:
1. Students must be registered for both a lecture and a lab section concurrently. Anyone
who is not registered cannot attend classes.
2. Daily attendance will be taken in lab. An attendance sheet will be next to the door at the
beginning of class. It is your responsibility to sign your initials on the attendance sheet to
be counted present for that day.
3. Tardiness is extremely disruptive to the class. When tardy please enter the room quietly
and take a seat in the back of the room.
4. According to class policy you are allowed one unexcused laboratory absence. An
unexcused absence is one in which you have not contacted me by phone or e-mail on
the day of the absence. Absences and tardies in excess of the class policy can
result in your withdrawal from the class.
Assignments and Exams:
1. Lecture assignments: Assignments must be completed and submitted by 11:59 on the
due date. Assignments for lecture are due by midnight on Sunday of each week. Late
assignments will NOT be accepted.
2. Lab assignments: Assignments for lab are due at the beginning of class on the date
indicated. Assignments will be considered late after the first 10 minutes of class. Late
assignments will NOT be accepted.
3. Lecture Exams: There are 5 lecture exams through the course of the semester, each
worth 100 points. These exams include multiple choice (80 pts) and short answer (20
points). In the final week of the course there is a mandatory cumulative final exam that
will count as a grade and can also be used to replace your lowest test score.
4. Lecture Quizzes: 10 point quizzes will be administered through Canvas. You must
complete the week’s quizzes by midnight on Sunday. There is a quiz associated with
each powerpoint lecture. The purpose of these quizzes is to encourage you to keep up
with studying for the course rather than cramming at the last minute prior to exams.
There are no make-up quizzes so be sure to meet the deadlines for each quiz.
5. Lab Exams: You will have 3 exams in lab. These lab exams will focus exclusively on the
anatomy and physiology covered in lab. Spelling will count on the lab exams! Correct
spelling is essential in the allied medical fields; therefore, for each misspelled word on a
practical, ½ point will be deducted.
6. Lab Work: Face-to-face labs are twice a week and many will build upon previous labs.
Therefore, it is essential that you attend every lab session. Phoenix College utilizes
cadavers and animal dissections as a part of this course. If you anticipate a problem
with the use of these materials, please contact me immediately. Your lab grade will
comprise a significant percentage of your final grade in this class.
7. Cumulative Final Exam: One mandatory comprehensive final examination will be given.
The final exam will count as a grade. The final exam score will also be used to replace
your lowest exam score (including missing scores). The grade replacement will only be
done if it will help to bring up your grade. The final exam will be 50 multiple choice
questions (no essay or short answer). The final exam will include material from units 1-4.
8. Grade corrections: If you feel that an assignment has been miss-graded in some way,
you must discuss the assignment with me within one week after receiving the grade!
9. Late work: Credit will NOT be given for late assignments.
Makeup Exams:
1. Lecture: Five lecture exams will be given. There are no make-ups on exams. The
Comprehensive Final Exam can be taken to replace your lowest lecture exam grade or
as a substitute for a missed lecture exam.
2. Laboratory: Three lab exams will be given. Because of the heavy utilization of DB109,
it is not possible to re-set lab exams. Since this class is the only late start, hybrid BIO
201 semester course you will not be able to make-up lab exams with another instructor.
Withdrawals
Students who enroll but do not participate in the class may withdraw themselves by calling
Admissions and Records, or their instructor may withdraw them. Either case will result in a
grade of "W." Note that participation means the completion of a single homework assignment or
an exam. Students who complete assignments or participate and then cease to participate must
contact their instructor to initiate a withdrawal. It is your responsibility to initiate a withdrawal
from the class. Failure to do so may result in a failing grade for the semester, a "Y" or a "W"
grade at the instructor's discretion.
Please note that if you participate all semester and end up earning a failing grade in the course,
the instructor will not do a last minute “W” for you. Please make your withdrawal decisions prior
to the official withdrawal deadlines for the course.
Student Services:
1. It is a college policy to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. If you
would like to request accommodations due to a physical, mental, or learning disability, please
contact the Disability Resources & Services (DRS) office, Hannelly Center (HC) Building, 602285-7477.
2. Phoenix College’s Success Center provides free tutoring, educational materials,
computer-assisted instruction and student development workshops. Some lab models
are also available for additional study outside your regularly scheduled laboratory.
Netiquette and Disruptive Behavior Policy:
Netiquette refers to the generally accepted rules of behavior for communicating in the online
environment. This list will serve as a general overview of these rules.
1. Be professional and careful with what you say in your posting. Express your thoughts
clearly and concisely.
2. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Internet communications are very impersonal
and others may take your words as criticism.
3. Be courteous and respectful of other people. If you use abusive or offensive language,
you will be blocked from the discussion area and potentially removed from your course. If
that is the case, you will not receive a refund for your tuition.
4. Use common sense - is this message something that you want to be sent to you? Will
you understand it in 3 days if you were to go back and read it?
Disruptive behavior on Canvas or the Phoenix College campus will not be tolerated and will be
dealt with in accordance with college policy. (See Phoenix College Student Handbook.)
Disruptive behavior includes harassment of other students or instructor and inappropriate or
unsafe activities with respect to other students, instructors, equipment or supplies.
Financial Policy
Students may be withdrawn from the class for non-participation. If you are receiving financial aid
of any kind, it is your responsibility to protect your eligibility to receive financial aid by meeting
the requirements of this class.
Communication
It is best to contact me by email (amy.bell@phoenixcollege.edu) or course messaging in
Canvas. Please note there is up to a 24 hour turn-around policy on these messages during
evenings and weekends.
It is highly recommended that you:
1. Save all of your email correspondence for the semester.
2. Keep a back-up copy of ALL the work you submit to your instructor.
3. Save all returned assignments
