Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to parents new to the school. I am sure that your child’s intermediate
education will be a rich and rewarding period of their life. Everyone on the staff will
endeavour to make this happen.
The intermediate years are a period of change and growth for children. It is
traditionally a period when they begin to emerge from childhood into adolescence.
An intermediate school has a significant role to play to ensure that this transition
gives children the capabilities to be confident and successful lifelong learners.
Students also become more independent and parents may feel disconnected from
their child’s learning and development.
As parents and caregivers we want you to take every opportunity to remain actively
involved in your child’s education. We believe that positive partnerships with
parents and caregivers are an integral part of the Belmont Intermediate School
learning community.
One of the most effective ways of keeping up to date with what is happening at
Belmont Intermediate is through our website www.belmontint.school.nz
I hope this booklet provides you with the information you need to best support your
child and the school throughout your association with Belmont Intermediate.
Regards,
Justin Somerville, Principal

BIKES
It is compulsory that students wear a helmet when riding to and from school. Traffic is very
dense on all roads leading to the school. The Principal or Associate Principals reserve the right to
withdraw permission to cycle to school if any breaches of roadworthiness or the Road Code occur.
Riding in the school grounds is prohibited. Students must dismount their bikes at the gate and
walk down the drive and do the reverse on the way home. All bikes are stored in the bike sheds
by the front entrance. Bikes must have a safety chain or padlock. The school will take all possible
care of bikes but is not prepared to accept any responsibility for bikes left unlocked.
NB: Skateboards/scooters are NOT PERMITTED at school unless is it a pre-approved mufti and
wheels day.
BISTECH TEAM
These are students who will help teachers and classes use ICT effectively. They will meet regularly
with an Associate Principal.
BUSES
The school bus service is provided by Ritchies Bus Company, which determines both routes and
fares. However, the school works in co-ordination with the Company to ensure that all students
behave on the buses. Complaints from drivers are dealt with at school and parents are involved if
any serious misdemeanours occur.
The Company has the final say as to who will travel on its buses and the school reserves the right
to suspend from travel any students whose behaviour is a threat to the safety of others.
Students line up on the concrete path above the car park on Winscombe Street (close to the
Takapuna Grammar School driveway) by Gate 1.

see ..........................
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
If your home address or telephone number change during the year it is very important that you
notify the School Office on 489 4878 or email office@belmontint.school.nz Sometimes your
emergency contact phone numbers or place of work might change.
CLASS CAPTAINS & VICE CAPTAINS
Each class elects a Captain and Vice Captain every two terms. Teachers will outline responsibilities
and regular meetings will be held with an Associate Principal. Class Captains wear badges at all
times.
CLASS LIBRARIANS
Each class will have a Class Librarian who is responsible for managing library books issues and
returns. Homeroom Class Librarians can also be involved in duty rosters for lunchtime opening of
the library.
COMMUNICATION
The school communicates with the parents and caregivers using a range of methods. A school
newsletter goes home fortnightly. The school website www.belmontint.school.nz is also a wealth
of information for parents and caregivers. There is also an expectation that teachers will contact
parents and caregivers via email every fortnight to keep them informed about the classroom
programme and activities.
All teachers have a phone in their room; extension numbers are listed on the staff list and also an
individual email address eg:
apaterson@belmontint.school.nz
Any teacher’s name can be substituted at the beginning of this address.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Learners of the future will need to have a range of skills, attributes and attitudes that will enable
them to work with changing and ever expanding knowledge.
At Belmont Intermediate School we have a set of five competencies or ways of behaving that
students should develop to become confident and successful lifelong learners.
These are based around the concepts of:
1.
Adaptable Thinking: How to think in different ways to learn effectively and move
forward to new challenges
2.
Collaborative Learning: How to work effectively with others
3.
Effective Communication: How to successfully interact with other people to gather
information and express ideas effectively
4.
Global Citizenship: How to relate to other people, the environment and the world
5.
Selfdirected and Reflective Learners: How to become a better learner
Throughout the year teachers will be focusing on the development of these competencies as part
of the students’ learning.
CORE VALUES
As well as these competencies we have four traditional core values of showing respect, taking
responsibility for and demonstrating commitment to their learning and acting in a caring way
towards others: aroha. These values are important to our way of life at Belmont Intermediate
School. They are talked about in assembly and reinforced in the classroom. The school is always
looking to recognise and affirm students whose actions reflect these values.
CULTURAL PROGRAMME
Students have a range of opportunities to be involved in our extensive cultural programme. The
following groups meet on a Thursday or Friday to practice:
o
o
o
o
o

healthy teeth, diet, general health habits etc. Students are called from class to attend the dental
clinic. Should a student have a dental problem or an injury she may be visited during school hours.
The Dental Clinic is situated on Winscombe Street, Gate 1, the phone number is 445 6664.
DISCOS
Discos are held once a term and are run by our PTA and are held in our school hall.
Below are some guidelines for our school discos:
o The students are supervised by parents and teachers at all times and are not allowed to
leave the hall until the conclusion of the disco
o All students must be delivered to and collected from the hall by a parent, caregiver or
nominated adult
o All tickets must be pre-purchased with a permission slip. Student are advised when
tickets are on sale
o Students are permitted to bring a small amount of money as cold drinks and snacks will
be on sale during the disco
Parents are asked to enter the hall through the main entrance when collecting their child and are
asked to exit through the side doors. This avoids congestion at the main entrance. Thank you for
your co-operation.

MOBILE PHONES
Student mobile phones must be taken to and left at the school office before school and collected
at 3pm.
NAMING OF CLOTHING
With over 500 students in the school there are always instances where clothing is mislaid. To enable
misplaced clothing to be returned to its owner all clothing should be named (including hats and
shoes). From experience, it is better to write on the uniform rather than on the label. Over the next
week there will be checks made on the naming of student clothing.
NEWSLETTERS
School newsletters are published every two weeks throughout term time. Newsletters are
emailed and printed copies are given to students who do not have internet access at home. To
ensure you are on the school email list please email jstone@belmontint.school.nz or subscribe via

advised about the role a peer mediator performs. Peer mediators wear a red cap, which allows
students to identify them easily in the playground.
PHYSICAL AND VERBAL HARASSMENT
