Abbey Hill Technology College Music Lesson Plan: Week 3 W/B: 13.3.06 Module: Unit 8- Jazz improvisations Class: 8BJ Support: Bernie Resources: ‘Let’s go Shoolie Shoo’ text, CD player, Interactive whiteboard, instruments, ‘Jelly Roll Blues’, images of under the sea, Learning Objectives: -To recognise individual instruments played in a jazz/ blues style. -To understand the origin of Jazz music. Introduction: -Focus on how Jazz began. Listen to examples of Scott Joplin’s music, and use PowerPoint presentation to explain how he started jazz music. -Listen to the song ‘Jelly Roll Blues’ by Louis Armstrong. Discuss the instruments featured and show illustrations. -Display an image of under the sea on the board (See video clips on CD ROM). Play the song again and imagine what you could be seen. Main Activity: -Split the pupils into groups (of about three). -Give each group an underwater animal. Ask the pupils to choose an instrument and create a rhythm to describe their animal. Each animal is matched to a symbol. Ask pupils to share their rhythm and then try to put the symbols together to create an underwater song (ensure each tune uses 4/4 time rhythm so they can easily fit together to create a song). Plenary: -Play the song together as a class discuss any improvements that need to be made. -Listen to the original ‘Jelly roll blues’ by Jelly Roll Morton. What differences can you hear? SNA role: -Work with the groups of pupils to create a 4/4 time rhythm. Encourage pupils to think of tempo, pitch etc. of their underwater creature.
