Invention Description
Brief Description:
The goal of this project was to integrate information, recreation, and technology into a cohesive design solution for the
hospital waiting room. Focused primarily on children ages 6-12, the project revolves around a ball pit in which each
individual ball is encoded with a RFID or micro chip which holds information. When the ball is “plugged in” to the matrix,
the computer will read the information encoded into each chip and display it on a monitor. On the interface there are three
main demos, a virtual aquarium, a virtual doctor environment, and an interactive game. When each ball is read it will
display information related to the three demos. The child can then learn about hospital procedures, common ailments, or
even check themselves into the hospital. In the future each ball can be encoded with personal information for the child,
and each child can have their own ball. When they go visit the doctor after the first visit and plug in the ball to the matrix it
can then recognize the child, welcome him or her, and pull up medical records in the back for check in purposes. The
purpose of this project is to teach children about hospital procedures and relieve the check in process through the simple
action of play. A more detailed description of each demo and purpose is attached.
Virtual Aquarium – The demo works by displaying an aquarium on the screen. Users can then select various balls from
the pit with fish on them. When the ball is inserted, the fish on the ball begins swimming in the aquarium. When the balll is
removed, so is the fish.
Virtual Doctor – Users are asked to insert a ball describing the ailment that they wish to know more information about. The
balls are labeled with pictures relevant to various conditions. When a ball is selected and inserted, the user will see a short
slide show or movie about the condition as well as its causes, preventative measures, and treatments.
Interactive Game – In its current incarnation, the only game available is tic-tac-toe, played by inserting colored balls into
the matrix in the appropriate places just like in real tic-tac-toe.

Commercialization Potential
A.
What are the commercial applications for the invention?
It can be applied in the waiting rooms in different hospitals, especially children hospitals. It makes the waiting experience fun and informative.
We can tailor our database and interface according to different needs of hospitals, like including different information about different target
diseases (e.g. asthma, sickle cell, diabetes etc.)
B.
What are the limitations that must be overcome prior to practical application?
The limitation we need to overcome is to improve the disinfection approach in this system.Error! Not a valid bookmark self-reference.
C.
What are the advantages of the invention versus present technologies?
This invention has integrated the play with information for the children that is presented in non-conventional ways to help get and keep their attention. It can
also facilitate the patient check in process by providing them “personalized ball”. The technology has combined many different technologies together, yet
provides a more thoughtful approach to create a friendlier care environment. Error! Not a valid bookmark self-reference.
D.
Please provide any available data or information on market potential/size.
E.
Is work on the invention continuing?
F.
