Chinese 4412 is an advanced Chinese course devoted primarily to reading and
discussing literature and culturally related topics in Chinese. The main purposes of this
course are to enlarge students’ vocabulary; to increase students’ reading speed; to
improve students’ reading comprehension; to maintain students’ conversation skills
through individual presentation, group discussion, and class debate; and to enhance
students’ writing ability through composition assignments, and a writing project.
After taking this 4-credit course, students can expect to be able to read Chinese
short stories with the aid of a dictionary. Students can also expect to increase their
knowledge of Chinese culture, history, and modern society through classroom reading,
and out of classroom assignments.
The intensive reading assignments are from the textbook 《Crossing Cultural
Boundaries 文化纵横观》by Kunshan Carolyn Lee, Hsin-Hsin Liang, Liwei Jiao and
Julian K Wheatley, and 《成语故事》compiled by Felicia Qiuyun Teng; The extensive
reading assignments are from《Capturing Chinese, Short Stories From 鲁迅呐喊》
Edited By Kevin Nadolny.
The supplementary reading assignments are from
《Advanced Chinese Reader (Focus on Fiction) 》 by Felicia Qiuyun Teng (check the
course web site for the audio version and the details).
