Assignment: You will be delivering a commemorative speech honoring a person or
place as we have discussed in class. Refer to your notes, class handouts,
and page 432 in your speech book for assistance.
General Purpose:
Occasion:
To Commemorate
A commemorative speech is given to mark an important event or to
honor a person. A testimonial speech honors a living person, and
a eulogy honors a person who has died.
Content & Tone:
* Discuss the significance of the event or person honored.
* Include brief anecdotes to illustrate your points.
(anecdotes should be light & illustrate person’s qualities)
* Include details and ideas that honor the person/event.
* Adopt a respectful/formal tone.
* Avoid slang and informal language .
Your speech will be delivered extemporaneously.
- Your speech will be prepared using a detailed outline.
- You should practice your speech a minimum of two times (with timer).
- You will be able to use a note card.
Topics: Everyone will be required to sign up for their speech. You should print
your name and the topic of your speech. The order that you sign up is
not the order that you will be speaking.
Time:
Your speech must be a minimum of two minutes, maximum 10 min.
Students should have no difficulties in reaching 2 minutes. Practice and
rehearse to ensure that you will make time.
Visual Aid: You are required to have a picture of the person or place that you’re
commemorating. Points may be deducted for not having a visual aid.
