NOTES FOR METALS, NON-METALS AND METALLOIDS (Page 105)
Metals give electrons away
Non-metals take or share electrons
Metalloids can do either
Metals are conductors of heat and electricity
Non-metals are insulators. They don’t conduct heat and electricity.
Metalloids are semiconductors. They do an OK job of conduction.
Metals are found to the left of the staircase on the periodic table. Note that the
Lanthanides and the Actinides at the bottom of the table are all metals
Non-metals are found to the right of the staircase on the periodic table. Hydrogen is a
non-metal even though it’s in the upper left corner.
Metalloids are the elements that touch the staircase on the periodic table. Even though
Aluminum touches the staircase, it’s still a metal.
