NDT Ranking Reports and Updates

This is the second of two official NDT Rankings Reports for the 2003-04 year. Each report includes overall rankings

(based on the top two teams from a school at eight tournaments), varsity rankings (based on the top two senior division teams from a school at eight tournaments), community college rankings (using overall points), and rankings by region (using overall points). The last page of this report explains how points are calculated. Teams earn points even if they are not members of the NDT, however only members are ranked in this final report.

In addition to the NDT Reports, Jon Brushke updates the NDT points as well as all results from college policy debate tournaments on a regular basis at his web page. You can access the pages at www.debateresults.com

You can see how NDT points are counted at: www.whitman.edu/rhetoric/ndt/

If you discover an error in the rankings or just have a question, email me at hansonjb@whitman.edu

Set up your tournament at www.debateresults.com

You are strongly encouraged to setup your tournament at www.debateresults.com and to use Gary Larson or Rich

Edward’s tab programs (“Smart Tab” and “Tab Room for the PC or for the Mac”). We urge you to use the latest versions of these tab programs as the older ones may not be fully compatible with Jon’s database especially the older Mac versions of

Rich Edward’s program. These programs are coded specifically to provide files that can be e-mailed to Jon Brushke. Jon inputs the file into his database and that puts the results on the web page and in this report. It creates an always up-to-date list of who is competing at the tournament, rankings of teams, NDT bid sheets, CEDA and NDT sweepstakes points, and a lot of useful and very interesting statistics. It also automatically sends calendar information to the AFA and CEDA.

Send results to Jon Bruschke

Send results when your tournament is completed to Jon Bruschke at jbruschke@Exchange.FULLERTON.EDU

Instructions on how to do this are at: www.debateresults.com (look in the lower left hand side of the page)

Join the NDT

The NDT, part of the American Forensic Association, would appreciate your membership support, even if you do not regularly participate in NDT events. The annual membership is only $30 payable to the National Debate Tournament, and can be paid in two ways: 1) to the NDT Board of Trustees Treasurer, Dr. Brett O’Donnell at Liberty University, or 2) to the

American Forensic Association, via executive secretary, Dr. Jim Pratt at Wisconsin-River Falls. Your institution can be invoiced easily if that is necessary to process payment.

Spring 2004 NDT Ranking Report Page 10

NDT Ranking Procedure

I. The ranking system will report the standing of all NDT subscribing programs in December and April each year. A threetiered system will be employed: (a) Ranking on a national basis for overall squad performance and for varsity level competition; (b) Ranking by districts; (c) Ranking of junior college programs.

II. Rankings will be based on a point system according to the following items: (a) Only results from the division of those tournaments with six or more teams per division from three or more schools will count towards the ranking. If divisions are combined for preliminary rounds and the resultant division meets the minimum size requirement, then the preliminary round results will count towards the rankings. The varsity rankings will only count the best two teams in varsity division; (b) The results of a school’s two best teams at any tournament in any division (senior, open, junior, or novice) of oxford-NDT debate will count toward the overall rankings. The varsity rankings will only count the best two teams in varsity division; (c) The results of a school’s best performance at a maximum of eight tournaments will count towards the rankings; (d) The first elimination round that qualifies for points must consist of no more than half of the participants in that division of the tournament; (e) Elimination rounds of teams from the host school of a tournament will not count toward the rankings; (f)

Lincoln-Douglas results or rounds in which a debater debated without a colleague or with a colleague from another school will not count toward the rankings; (g) If the elimination rounds of a tournament are interrupted by extenuating circumstances, the points remaining to be earned will be evenly distributed to the remaining participants, rounded to the nearest whole number.

III. Points are allocated as follows
