. The San Diego Peace Memorial: (Two Plaques & statue of Jesus) dedicated on June 13, 1969, “For God and Country.” The San Diego Peace Memorial is dedicated to “The heart of Jesus, Prince of Peace; honoring Father Junipero Serra, founder of the first California Mission San Diego de Alcalá, 7/16/1769 and the memory of the gallant men of the United States Armed Forces who served and laid down their lives in the Vietnam War for peace…” as San Diego’s 200th Anniversary was honored & celebrated in Old Town San Diego. November 10, 1974 two additional plaques were placed at the Old Town San Diego site honoring more Vietnam War casualties. Early in the year 1994 the Catholic Diocese sold the property on which the memorial rested. A final “retirement-relocation ceremony” was held 2/3/96 at the Peace Memorial. The San Diego Peace Memorial was re-dedicated at its present location outside the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center on Memorial Day 5/27/96. On Memorial Day 5/26/97 an additional plaque was added to include the remaining San Diego Vietnam War casualties and missing in action, bringing the total honored to 455. New names will also be inscribed on the memorial when authenticated.
