INSTANT VOCABULARY 141 – 145
VOCABULARY
KEY
DEFINITION AND USAGE
These ROOTS are JUS and JUR meaning LAW. JURIS
JUS - JUR
TEMPO - TEMPOR
TRIB
ARCH
DROME - DROMOS
means “of Law,” from Roman Law. Please notice change
of accent in conJURe and conJURer. Also notice the use
of ad and ab: adJURe and abjJURe. The prefix here is
most important to the meaning of the word.
These ROOTS are TEMPO and TEMPOR, which mean
TIME. It comes from the Latin tempus and temporis. Do
not confuse this Root with one which is spelled temper.
That is something entirely different. Words like
temperature or temperate have nothing to do with TIME
- TEMPOR. Another word, which looks similar, is tempt.
This too, has nothing to do with TIME - TEMPOR. So,
when a word has TEMP in it, just take a hard look at the
next letter. Not e, not I, but o.
This ROOT is TRIB, which comes from the Latin
tribuere, to PAY and BESTOW. These two meanings
seem to be contradictory, but both imply giving. To PAY
tribute to a hero means to BESTOW honor on him. To
PAY tribute to the conqueror means to BESTOW money
on him. The two meanings come from the same root; to
know which is being used you must read the text.
This ROOT-WORD is the Root ARCH, which means
RULER. It comes from the GREEK archos. From this
basic meaning it is associated with chief or head or king
or origin in one way or another. You can make many
words with ARCH, from ARCHbishop to ARCHfoe, from
ARCHfriend to ARCHilar. Sometimes it is pronounced
ARCH and sometimes ARK.
These ROOTS are DROME and DROMOS, which come
from the Greek and mean RUNNING. Sometimes this
ROOT is spelled DROMOUS and is found at the end of a
word. Then it is called a Suffix, but that is very rare. I’m
certain you know that there is the two-humped camel as
well as the DROMEdary. The DROMEdary is the swift
one and can run a hundred miles in one day’s travel. It
is my guess that because of this speed, he was given a
name with DROME, running, in it.
