10/09/2012 Class 4 – Tudor Explorers! – Term 1 2012/13 Dear Parents, Please find details of our topic, events and other information below. All this information can also be found on the Hever School website. TOPIC Next term in Class 4 our topic will be ‘Tudor Explorers!'. The topic will be based around the themes of Tudors Exploration - Why and How? Early Colonisation and Life on a Tudor Ship. As part of this topic we will be investigating a crime on a Tudor ship! Attached is a brief overview of what we will be covering in each curriculum area plus useful web links for research. DAILY REQUIREMENTS Reading book and reading journal Pencil case and stationary PE kit Painting apron HOMEWORK Attached is an overview of homework for this term. PE PE will be on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. All children are expected to take part every week and must have their PE kit in school at all times. If your child does any before/after school sports clubs can we suggest that they have a separate kit for those so that their PE kit can remain in school for PE lessons. There is a weekly drop in session after school on a Tuesday and we are happy to see parents by appointment at other times. Subject area DT/Art Literacy French ICT/History Task Hand in date To make a treasure chest style box in which to keep their topic work on Tudor exploration. It would be helpful if the box could open and close. To write a descriptive piece of life on board a Tudor ship. This can be from the point of view of a sailor or cabin boy. Friday 19th October Vocabulary challenge: To learn to read, and say the words for rooms in a house/Tudor ship (see attached list for some help). Extension: Can you try memorising the spellings and label a diagram Tudor ship in French Use the internet to research one of the voyages which took place in Tudor times. You could present this in word or PowerPoint form to include in your topic file. (children can print these at school, just bring the file in on a memory stick in plenty of time for the hand in date). Tip: Don't copy and paste from the internet! You will learn much more if you use your own words to show what you have researched. Tip: Check the authenticity of the website you use. There is a suggested list on the newsletter. Sites like Wikipedia can be unreliable at times. Friday 12th October Friday 5th October Friday 28th September In addition to this homework children will be expected to do the following on a weekly basis Mental Maths books - 1 page only per week, to be handed in on a Tuesday to be given out on a Friday. Children are welcome to discuss any worries/problems with Mrs Corden/Mrs Davis/Mr Watts. Times tables – Children will be regularly tested on times tables and division during maths lessons and should practise those they find challenging at home. Spellings - These will be given out and tested each Friday. Children are expected to learn the spellings set ready for a dictation exercise each Friday morning which will include a selection of words on the list, and also will be checked for neat, joined handwriting and correct punctuation. Reading - Children should be reading regularly and recording this in their reading records. Reading records will be collected and checked every Monday morning. Décris ta maison.
