Survey Research Center, UC Berkeley Research Assistant - Summer 1999 to Summer 2001 - - Worked for this organization under Professor of Political Science Henry Brady. Together with Professor Brady and Professor of Political Science (UC Santa Barbara) Cynthia Kaplan, researched the role of mass publics in independence and democratization movements in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Developed and analyzed a database of mass public events in the region in the late 1980s and early 1990s, based on a reading of numerous secondary sources. Worked with Professors Brady and Kaplan to develop formal models of decision-making by political elites in response to and anticipation of mass protest. Central European University Labor Project Prague, Czech Republic and Budapest, Hungary Research Associate - 1995-1997 - - - Worked for this organization under Associate Professor of Economics John S. Earle, studying a number of topics related to the economic and political transformation of formerly communist countries and assisting in the provision of policy advice in transitional economies. Researched the relationship between economic reform and political attitudes in transitional countries, and the transformation of privatized enterprises in the Czech Republic. At the request of the Office of the Prime Minister of Mongolia, was engaged in a project to design and implement a privatization program for Mongolia. Met with and provided advice to members of Government of Moldova, particularly in the field of pension reform. Coordinated a large survey of medium-sized, privatized manufacturing enterprises in the Czech Republic, and disseminated results from that research through a seminar for Czech managers and academics. Performed statistical analysis of large data sets for a number of other projects coordinated by Prof. Earle. Worked with Professor Earle to secure funding for research activities from a number of foundations and multilateral organizations, helping to write grant applications. Central Europe Institute Prague, Czech Republic Senior Consultant - 1994-1995 - Managed an office of Czech and American consultants providing management consulting services to Czech entrepreneurs. Worked with Czech entrepreneurs to develop business strategy, write business plans, and acquire financing. Taught a series of seminars throughout the Czech Republic on business planning. Co-authored the first book specifically targeted to a Czech audience on business plan development. Co-authored a series of articles on management issues for Profit, a Czech business journal. Office of Congressman Thomas W. Ewing Washington, D.C. Legislative Assistant - 1992-1994 - Managed Congressman Ewing’s activities on the House Agriculture Committee, of which he was a member. Prepared legislation on a number of issues, including an initiative eventually passed into law to reduce trafficking in food stamps.
