Topics include an overview of observational and experimental study designs, graphical and numerical descriptive statistics, probability distributions for simple experiments and random variables, sampling distributions, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing for the mean and proportion in the one sample and two sample cases. Completion of an extensive statistics project is an essential component of the course. Students are taught to use statistical software and the graphing calculator to handle the computations. Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will improve their decision-making skills, be able to test new ideas, and make inferences to a larger population. A major emphasis of the course is on developing statistical reasoning skills and concepts; computational skills are secondary. Statistics is a key analytical tool used in education, the social sciences, and business administration. It is often a required college course for majors in those areas. Statistics is frequently used for data analysis in the sciences and forms the mathematical basis for quality control in manufacturing. Format and Procedures: 1. Class attendance is mandatory. If you do miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up the material and make sure your work is turned in on time. If you have a special circumstance that may interfere with your regular attendance, please discuss it with me. 2. The teacher and administrators will handle tardy procedures in accordance with school guidelines. If you are placed in the Tardy Tank, you are responsible for turning in any assignments that are due once you have returned to class. Tardy Tank is not a valid excuse for not turning in assignments on time or missing an assessment. 3. If you miss a test, you are responsible for making arrangements to take the test within two class meetings. If the student is absent on the day of the review, they are still responsible to take the test on the assigned day. 4. Students scoring below “70” on a concept standard shall be allowed to redo the assessment after completing corrections on the failed concept standard. The higher grade with a maximum of “70,” shall be recorded. Redoing a major assessment should be completed within 5 days of the teacher returning the assessment. 5. AP Statistics’ assessments will be graded by concept standards. This means that one assessment may be broken down by each concept in order to demonstrate mastery of individual standards. Students will be allowed to correct standards that are not mastered without having to correct the entire assessment and then re-test only the failed concept standard. 6. If you are absent the day a project is due, it is due the day you return to class. 7. Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned daily, but not necessarily graded daily. 8. Late Work Policy: Students may turn in minor assignments one day late for a maximum grade of an 80. 9. Conduct: a. Be on time and prepared for class to begin. b. Be respectful to yourself and others. c. Be responsible for your actions and lessons. Course Requirements: 1. Requested Supplies: Graphing Calculator (highly encouraged), 1 box of facial tissue 2.
