Student Teacher PORTFOLIO: Profile and Cover Letter Checklist, 2014-15
IMPORTANCE OF STUDENT PROFILE AND COVER LETTERS:
1. This is your first step in your ultimate job interview. Your profile is the first impression a school principal will
have of you, as I present your profile to them when seeking your student teacher placement.
2. The documents will show principals the degree of professionalism and dedication that you have, in regard to
your role as a future educator.
COVER LETTER:
1. The Margins are built into the template: Top 2”, Right .7”, Bottom .5”, Left .7”. Font size no smaller than 11. (I
will be putting your letter on OSU-Cascades letterhead for each placement request.)
2. Leave the letter’s date and salutation “generic,” i.e. “Date, Name, Address, City, State, Zip, Dear_______”.
3. In the Cover Letter Template, see the sections that define what is needed in each paragraph.
4. Provide 2-4 spaces for your signature—make sure you “sign” your name in scripted, blue font and have proper
identification: Your name typed, Master of Arts in Teaching student, Oregon State University, Cascades,
Enclosure: Student Teacher Profile. (The cover letter should be no longer than one page.)
PROFILE FORM: (Formatted Resume)
1. Please note that the cells expand as you type. Your profile document should not exceed 2 pages.
2. In the “Degrees/Authorization/Endorsement/Institutions/Locations” box, list your degrees in chronological
order with most current education first, including “Master of Arts in Teaching, OSU-Cascades, expected
completion, 2015.” The formal degree title that you are acquiring is a “Master of Arts in Teaching”. Your
authorization is “Early Childhood & Elementary Education”. Also in this section, list the completion dates, if
any, for other educational institutions you have attended. In the “Degrees/Major/2nd
Major/Minor/Institutions/Locations” box, list your undergraduate work.
(We refer to your undergraduate title as “Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science, or Associate of Arts or
Science, or Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer, or other.”)
3. In the “Related Experience” section, please be sure to include any teaching observation or any volunteer
experience that you have had in the public school classroom. Our outstanding student profile examples, define
specific experiences, rather than just listing places and dates of an experience. Bullet statements can help save
room and are easy to read. Use quantitative statements when appropriate.
4. In the “Bilingual/Multilingual Experience” section, please state your foreign language proficiency level, if any.
5. Your “Goals for My Classroom and Professional Career Development” should be carefully thought out and
described. (These can be written in a narrative or bullet form.)
6. The “Additional Information” section allows you to say what you haven’t included on this profile that you think
a principal would appreciate knowing about you, i.e., travel, certifications, trainings, special interests, etc.
(Think as if YOU were the principal: what would you want to know about this student teacher?).
7. Insert your name at the bottom of the second page. PORTFOLIO DUE DATE: FEB. 1, by 5:00pm (email)
nancy.hackbarth@osucascades.edu, or via Google Drive w/ email notification
NOTES: Don’t box yourself in by indicating an interest in a specific grade level and/or specific school. Remember, your
completed form will be submitted to a school principal, so make sure your written pieces are visually attractive as well
as well-written, grammatically correct, and have accurate punctuation and spelling. (You are the ultimate editor and
author of this document- I suggest that you read it out loud.)
