Overview of Mekong Delta Located on the lower basin of the Mekong River, the Mekong Delta (MD) has the population of around 18 million with 13 provinces and cities. It is surrounded by 700km of coastline. The biggest difference to most visitors to this Delta is its weather and soil. The average temperature of 280C with relatively strong sunshine makes a great influence on the characteristics of soil and plants in the region. The MD is considered as a rice-bowl of Vietnam and also the King of fruit and aquatic products. Originating in the Tibetan Plateau,Tien River and Hau River pouring in the delta are the two branches of the Mekong River. Being the lower basin of the Mekong River, the rivers in this Delta contain a bulk of water by nature that facilitates more than 1,200 different species of aquatic creatures with more than 60 species with high economic value.Annually these rivers carry about 150 to 200 million tons of alluvium which makes the Delta more and more fertilizable. The MD has a labyrinthine water way system with over 28,000km of river way, thousands of kilometers of canals and hundreds of green islets and nine estuaries towards the sea in which is suitable for several river tours. With the names of Nga Bay, Phung Hiep-Hau Giang; Cai Rang, Ba Lang,Vam Xang, Phong Dien-Can Tho; Cai Be-Tien Giang...., the flooating markets have been existing for nearly one hundred years as “the soul” of the region. It is the sublimation of the Southern waterway civilization. A lively space is created by boats with full of countryside products gathering at one place. Thousands of long bamboo poles are put on the head of the boats with a lot of suspending products, inviting the visitors. Both of sellers and buyers move by boat in the immense river, creating a picture of the typical vivid life in the floating MD markets. Floating Market 8 In flooding season, the MD looks more primitive and wilder. Flood annually starts to overflow in July and August. The climax of flood is in Septenber and October when water level highly rises up.This season is also the season of immense fields being covered by the yellow of dien dien flowers and the bearing time of Linh fish (a kind of fresh water fish). Back to the countryside, where is home to over 2,000 rice varieties, rice of Go Cong and Vinh Long that have represented all the country, pave “the west journey” at the soonest. Three ranges of islets An-Minh-Bao’s Ben Tre are famous for fruit-tree engrafting, especially the two locations: Cai Mon and Cho Lach. And there locations are also the homeland of animal bonsais (following the animal designations of lunar calendar) that shows differences in the highly aesthetic creativity of the countryside people of the Delta from the bonsai-bending styles of Chinese people as well as people from the Central and the North of Vietnam. Reaching Dong Thap Muoi (plain of Reeds),visitors can discover a 700,000 hectare of wilds flooded region reaching Ca Mau- the tip of the South Vietnam to penetrate through the ecological area of mangrove forests, endless indigo forests, which is called the Amazon of the MD. Indeed, the MD, which is known as “dat lanh chim dau”(good land for birds),especially migrating birds, is one of seven large reproducing regions of herons, striped storks, white storks, Western red-crowned cranes. Tram Chim Sanctuary has 92 species; U Minh forest has 81 species and tens of other birth yards in Can Tho, Bac Lieu….also gather in this region. Ba Dong sea (Tra Vinh), Khai Long (Ca Mau),… have gigantic natural beauty full of sunlight all the year. Ha Tien sea and Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang) are the Creator’s special offer on a plenty of aquatic and nautical creatures to the Delta. Vong Co or Cai Luong (special types of Vietnamese traditional opera music)-an artistic type of typical uniqueness only available in the Southern area and “Da Co Hoai Lang” (missing her husband late at night when listening to the sound of drum) has made one deep in its lofty humanity for over 80 years. The MD is also a place where converges, exchanges the culture of four peoples: Vietnam, Khmer, China, and Champa people. It closely follows Oc Eo Culture, Phu Nam hallmark being anciently famous thereby attract exploring journey of culture, manners and customs and beliefs of the local people. The local residents do not put themselves into a range of bamboo, and communal houses but live in an “open” space, mainly distributed along the special traffic routes nearby the rivers. 9 Beside Vietnamese ancient communal houses are temples and pagodas of Chinese people. Islam Chapel with high dome of Cham people has meditated by Chau Giang River. Khomer pagodas of Hinayana are colorful, and the image of the spiritual snake Naga is cleverly carved. Con Phung Islet (Ben Tre Province) is a “Mecca” of Coconut Faith with dragon yard and tower; Tay An Ancient Pagoda in the Seven Mountains (An Giang Province) is the place where people worship the persons who set up Buu Son Ky Huong,… Among hundreds of antique houses by the MD River, a 130-year-old house in Binh Thuy District (Can Tho) with five compartments and two roots is one of the ten reasons that attract tourists to the MD. It is also a place entering the world literature and movies. The MD is the land of festivals. Thanh Minh festival (falls on 5th March, lunar calendar) brings both Chinese anf Vietnamese people to do cleaning and decorating their ancestral graves. Cham people have Hat Gi and Ramadan festivals; Khomer people perform their fivesound music in Cholchman Thmay, Dolta, Ok-Om-Bok, as well as Lady Worship season on Sam Mountain, Buffalo Race in Bay Nui (An Giang), and Whale welcoming Festival by the sea,… Bull race in An Giang province Beside festivals, the cultural and artistic characteristics of our ancestors, one-product-making villages have been maintained for hundreds of years such as An Giang with brocade weaving of Cham and Khmer people and floating villages; Phu Quoc Island with the best anchovy fish sauce and peper; Soc Trang with mat weaving; Go Den-Long An with sticky rice spirits; Tra Vinh with Luong Hoa rice papers; Hau Giang with Nga Bay boat-making village (7-river mouths); Can Tho with Thom Rom net-knitting village and Thoi Long tiny shrimp trap,… Local cuisine is a must in your trip. The typical dishes here are the famous Lau Mam (Fermented Fish Sauce Hot Pot served with over twenty different kinds of countryside vegetables). Some other delicious dishes are pancake, pork cooked in coconut juice, sour soup with snakehead fish, straw-grilled snakehead fish, grilled snake, cooked salted fish, roasted rice-eating rat, eels steamed with gourd, banana fish in clay-pot, dua goby cooked with fish sauce and pepper, My Tho noodle, Bac Lieu grilled-in-stick shrimps, Phu Quoc boletus, Tunglomo (Chinese beef sausage mixes with cold rice), Hapaychal cake of Cham people, Sim loa Soup (banana flower soup cooked with fried salted fish), Bun nuoc leo (rice noodle soup with snakehead fish, shrimp, pork, lemon grass broth) etc,... All create the “color and fragrance” to make the Delta more charming, pervasive and unforgettable to tourists. 10 2.
