Media –Rich Lesson Plan Language Arts Divide County High School/Jr High Name: Betty Dhuyvetter TITLE: Research Methods GRADE LEVEL: 10 TIME ALLOTMENT: One or two 45- min. class periods OVERVIEW: Students will learn about the difference between direct quotations, paraphrasing, and summarizing. After watching a video demonstrating the three methods, they will examine Internet sources and practice borrowing material from these sources by using each of these three methods. They will also learn the proper MLA format for citing these three types of information. SUBJECT MATTER: Research writing LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students will learn the terms direct quotation, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Students will practice quoting information from outside sources by using these three methods. Students will learn how to differentiate between material that must be cited and “general knowledge” information which need not be cited. Students will copy bibliographical information onto note cards (source cards). Students will learn how to properly cite this information using MLA formatting guidelines. Students will connect the information gathered with a proper bibliographic entry. MLA Style and Format (4:17) MATERIALS: Laptops and Active Board Worksheets Note cards PREP FOR TEACHERS: Have active board ready to present videos. Prepare an index card with information to be regurgitated. Prepare worksheet (paper or electronic) for students to copy information by using direct quotes, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Have note cards available for student use. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY - SETTING THE STAGE: MATERIALS: Role-playing activity Info. card 1. The teacher (or one of the students) will read a statement and then three students will attempt to repeat what the speaker said by using different methods: 2. Student 1: Direct Quote 3. Student 2: Paraphrase 4. Student 3: Summary LEARNING ACTIVITIES: MATERIALS: 1. Students will ask questions about and discuss the three different presentations. 2. Then we will watch video clip #1 (7:44). 3. After watching the video we will restate the terms and their definitions. 4. Then we will use our laptops to research a particular topic. 5. After searching and limiting information on that topic, students will take notes using the three different methods (worksheet or electronic document). 6. Then we’ll watch video #2 on MLA Style and Format (4:17). 7. Students will then use their note cards to record the necessary information for citing from that site. 8. Students will make a works cited entry for that site. 9. Students will then practice connecting their information with the bibliography (works cited) page, using a parenthetical citation. CULMINATING ACTIVITY: MATERIALS: Students will submit their worksheets with three citations properly connected to a one-source bibliography using MLA style and format. printed doc CROSS-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY: MATERIALS: Students may research a “hot topic” from another of their classes, e.g. history, science, math, or health.
