MLA Citation Style -- Examples
These examples are intended as a guide for citing sources. For further information, check most current edition (7th) of the MLA
Handbook for Writers of Research Papers or visit MLA’s FAQ: http://www.mla.org/handbook_faq
MLA Guidelines changed in 2009. Here is a summary of major citation changes:
All entries should include the medium of publication (i.e. Print, Web, CD, DVD, E-mail, Film, etc.).
URLs are not included for online sources unless readers will not be able to locate the source without it or when your
instructor requires it.
Journal citations should include volume and issue numbers.
Titles of publications are italicized rather than underlined.
PARENTHETICAL REFERENCES
Place the author's last name and the page number of the work you are citing in parentheses at the end of the sentence. If the author’s
name is mentioned in the sentence, use the page number alone in parentheses.
Example: The need for continuing education has become apparent to all (Jones 83).
Example: According to Rogers, this does not represent a conflict of interest (71).
