ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY RESOURCE AND DEVELOPMENT COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2006 REC 345 MEETINGS AND CONVENTION MANAGEMENT Instructor: James A. Fausel, CMP, CMM Office Hours: By appointment or Thursdays 3:00pm – 4:00pm Phone: 602 496 0161 Room: 580L The Conference Connection - 480 949 8472 Classroom: Room 279 Class Hours: Thursdays 4:40 – 7:30pm Course Description: Focuses on basic aspects and skills involved in planning and managing meetings and conventions. Covers the meetings industry with a broad approach. Emphasis on types of meetings and meeting markets. Examines entire sequence of events, from conceptual state of first meeting plan though completion of the event. Strong emphasis on the meeting participant as the adult learner. This course will help candidates prepare themselves for employment in the hospitality industry. Course curriculum is based on the 27 Meeting Management Functions as identified by the Convention Liaison Council. Course Objectives: This course is to provide students with an understanding of the meetings industry and with technical/ professional skills required to properly execute and manage a meeting or convention. Focus will be on application of knowledge and techniques to real world situations. As such, students successfully completing REC 394 will obtain knowledge and understanding in meeting related topics. Course Materials/ Required Texts Barbara Nichols, Professional Meeting Management (Education Foundation of the Professional Convention Management Association, 4TH Edition =2001) Text books are available in ASU’s Downtown Campus Bookstore MIForum ( instructions to be given in Class) APEX FOR MEETING AND EVENT PLANNING Printed Materials for this class: (instructions to be given in class) as indicated by Instructor Department and Instructors Course Policies: 1. Class Participation and Attendance: A successful learning experience is based on students commitment and participation. Therefore, students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in all class discussion. Also, it is impossible to participate in class discussion if the student is absent, so attendance is required. Quality of class participation will carry more weight than quantity. EXCESSIVE ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN LOWER COURSE GRADES. If absences are excessive, but medically excused, a student will receive an "I" or "W" depending on the circumstances. Tardiness constitutes an absence. More than 2 absences will be considered excessive. It is the students responsibility to sign in on attendance sheet for each class. 2. Handouts: Handouts will be provided frequently throughout the semester. It is the responsibility of students to secure these materials from the instructor. The instructor will not be responsible for providing materials to students who have missed class. 3. MIForum For the first 10 weeks of the course, each student will be responsible for signing on to the MIForum (Meetings Industry Forum) and read the various posts each day on meeting matters. An oral quiz will be given at random each week on the topics posted that week and each student selected will be responsible for explaining what they observed. 4. Late Policy - There is no valid excuse for turning in assignments late. All assignments are due at the beginning of the assigned class period. Assignments turned in after the instructor has called for assignments to be turned in are late. 5. Assignment Format Policy - All assignments must be typewritten or word processed. Exceptions will be given in specific situations. Work done for this class is to be original, done exclusively for this course and comply with course standards as outlined by the instructor. 6. Examination Policy - Students will not be allowed for any reason to exit and reenter the examination room. Students must submit their exam as completed before exiting the examination room. Students exiting the examination room prior to submitting the exam will receive a "0" for that exam. The Mid Year exam must be written in pen. 7. Make up Examinations: Students should notify the instructor immediately of any conflicts with scheduled examinations. Failure to do so could result in a "0" for the exam.. If the student has a valid excuse, the exam will be rescheduled at my convenience. 8, Field Trip - Field Trip attendance will be treated as class attendance. Students are responsible for arranging transportation to/from each trip. We are planning on a field trip to the Ritz Carlton and the new Phoenix Convention Center.
