We hold a unique Beginners event in which the youngest members of the Club who have just learnt to swim, show off their skills by swimming one length of the pool (this is not a race and swimmers swim one at a time, with senior swimmers in the water alongside the beginners). The closing date for the Championships is in October and will be posted on the notice board. Ask your teacher for advice on which events to enter. Competitions We are a competitive swimming club and enter four leagues each year. We participate in the Central Lancashire Junior Swimming League, Intermediate League and the Jubilee League and also the B&D Mini League. If you are selected by the Team Manager to swim in one of these galas, please make every effort to attend and to tick your names off on the notice board. If for some reason you are unable to attend, please contact the Team Manager in plenty of time so that a replacement can be brought in. Club Colours Our colours are green and yellow for the swimmers and black T-shirts for the teaching poolside staff. Every swimmer is asked to wear a Club hat when competing for the Club which are available from the desk or the Team Manager. The ASA bans adverts for tobacco and alcohol on poolside and clothing. Club merchandise is available from the desk and includes caps, goggles, T shirts, costumes, shorts and bags. Atherton & Leigh A.S.C. Teaching Philosophy Teach technique before speed We believe that if we are to develop good swimmers we need to concentrate on developing good technique from the very start rather than speed. The old adage of “practice makes perfect” is not always true. Swimming distances with a poor technique only ensures that a fault becomes a habit that often takes more work to correct than if the fault had been corrected at an early stage. Be professional at all times As members of the poolside staff we must always be conscious of presenting a professional appearance and of the example this sets. When dealing with young people we need to remember that our words and actions are the first elements in building up good communications and respect. In order to build good communications and respect we need to treat all swimmers fairly, regardless of gender, race, physical ability, colour or background. There are no losers in swimming There is a verse called children “Learn”, parts of that are verse provide invaluable advice for teaching in any discipline. The verse emphasises that: If a child lives with criticism – a child learns to condemn. If a child lives with ridicule – a child learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame – a child learns to feel guilty. However If a child lives with praise – a child learns to appreciate. If a child lives with encouragement – a child learns confidence. If a child lives with approval – a child learns self-esteem. 9 Above all swimming should be FUN. If the pupils aren’t enjoying the experience, then the teachers need to adapt what they are teaching!!! Personal Best Times Log Book Date Stroke Distance 10 Venue Notes 11 12
