Information Literacy Unit 1: Examining the Course Profile
The following notes and the related quiz will assist you in becoming familiar with the
course profile.
The course profile - a source of information
Locating information from a range of information sources including print and
electronic sources is a requirement of university study. Your lecturers, tutors and
peers may also be important sources of study-related information. The course profile
is another very useful information source as it provides you with details relating to the
course's structure, content, assessment and contacts. Other information sources that
you may need to access at various stages of university study include journals,
websites, academic books, and reports.
At all times, however, you must be discriminatory in your selection of information
sources. Knowing what sources of information are available, and the type of
information they provide, will help you to make informed decisions about what are
appropriate information sources to use when finding information for tutorial and
assessment tasks.
The Library’s information literacy tutorial, Compass: Library Help Online, provides a
description of various information sources at:

Referencing style for this course
When you have read your course profile you will notice that you are expected to use
a particular referencing style. This expectation is common for most courses at CQU.
What can differ between courses is the actual style of referencing that is required.
There are only four different referencing styles that are endorsed for use by CQU.
Information about all four referencing styles can be found on the CQU Referencing
website, at:
http://www.cqu.edu.au/referencing/
For this course you are required to learn and apply the Harvard (author-date) style
of referencing but please be aware that other courses in the program you are
undertaking may require you to use a different style of referencing. Do not be
anxious about referencing as resources have been provided on this course site to
help you to develop your referencing skills. You can also seek assistance from
learning support staff and from your tutors, as well as using the guide to style
provided on the CQU Referencing website.
Note: It is necessary to read the course profile in detail to complete Information
Literacy Quiz 1. (You may be required to have knowledge of information on the
Compass website for later quiz questions.) You will find the quiz listed when you
select the Assessment link on the left of the course website.
