HOMERTON COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE CB2 2PH Job Title: Development Director Reporting to: Principal The College Homerton College founded in the 18th Century, moved to its current location from London in 1894 and until 2000 was England’s leading teacher-training College. It became a self-governing College of the University of Cambridge in 2010 and offers all the normal Cambridge subjects with the exception of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Located within easy reach of the historic city centre, and within five minutes of Cambridge mainline station, the College has over 1,000 students, a Fellowship of about 70 and approximately 115 staff. The College has extensive grounds, over 700 residences on site and a well-maintained estate. Homerton is financially secure with a £50m endowment and a substantial conference business which presently delivers a healthy annual surplus. Development at Homerton College Homerton College’s Development Office was established in 2010, although the Roll had been maintained for over 30 years. The three year strategy adopted in 2010 saw an extensive programme of events established for alumni, an annual telephone campaign conducted alongside an Annual Fund and improved communications with our alumni. There are active alumni branches around the country. The College is now seeking to appoint a Development Director to develop the next stage of its Development Strategy that is likely to see new activity both with the alumni and beyond. This will be aligned with the appointment in October 2013 of the new Principal, Professor Geoffrey Ward who will play a leading role in Development. Page 1 of 4 Currently the Development Office has three members of staff: the Development Director, Alumni Communications Assistant and Database administrator. The College’s Development Committee reports formally to the Council. Overview of the position The Development Director will be responsible for developing and executing the strategic direction of the Development Office as well as its management. S/he will need to build a case for supporting new initiatives and strategies. A primary focus of the new strategy is likely to be the generation of donations and legacies through the identification and cultivation of major prospects. The Development Director will need to be confident in undertaking face-to-face solicitation primarily in the UK. The post holder will report to the Principal on strategic issues and the Bursar on budgetary and management issues. S/he will also work closely with the Vice-principal, Senior Tutor and other Fellows and staff of the College. In recognition of the increased status of this position, the Development Director may be offered a College Fellowship, and will attend Governing Body meetings as required. There will be some requirement to travel and to work outside normal office hours, particularly to attend alumni events. The College would consider a candidate who wanted to work fewer than 5 days per week. Key Responsibilities The Development Director will have direct responsibility for: i. Developing, implementing and reporting on the overall Development Strategy which will support the College’s overall vision and objectives, and agreeing this with the Development Committee and Council; ii. Producing and implementing an annual plan and budget for Development and agreeing this with the Development Committee and Council; iii. Management of the Development team ensuring high professional standards communication, database management and project management; iv. Drafting an inspiring Case for Support for approval by the Development Committee linked to a plan of events and fundraising ; v. Representing the College on inter-collegiate committees such as the Cambridge Colleges Development Group, and liaising regularly with the Cambridge University Development Office (CUDO) and Cambridge in America; vi. Working closely with the Principal and Fellows in development activities. Page 2 of 4 in Most importantly, the Development Director will be responsible for building relationships with donors and legators and raising funds from them where appropriate with the support of the Principal and others in raising funds. Success will be measured in terms of the level of funds raised that can be used to meet the College’s strategic aims. Success, measured against goals agreed, will be monitored in annual review meetings with the Principal and Bursar. Person Specification for the role of Development Director The successful candidate is likely to have many of the following skills, competences and experience: Substantial experience of all areas of development including, raising money for endowed funds, running Annual Fund and legacy programmes and of face-to-face fundraising; Proven capability to undertake face-to-face meetings with major donors and to manage a major donor programme; Strong communication skills, particularly interpersonal skills; Capability to manage a team and to lead groups of volunteer workers; A proven record as a team player and ability to engage and work with colleagues across the College, including the Fellows; The capability to understand the needs of the College and communicate these to potential donors; Proven ability to think strategically and to demonstrate good judgment; Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge software; Good IT and administrative skills. The single most important factor is a successful track record in fundraising. It would be preferable if the candidate had experience of development in the UK education sector. Remuneration and benefits The salary will be in the region of £55k depending on qualifications, skills and experience. The position is pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. Holiday entitlement is 25 days’ paid plus public holidays. The Development Director is likely to be elected to a Fellowship within their first year, becoming a member of the Governing Body and a member of the Governing Body of the College and will enjoy the usual benefits of a Fellowship.
