Course Number: DANC 2303
Course Title: Dance Appreciation
Course Description: A course in the understanding of dance as an art form. Emphasis placed on
the aesthetics of dance as a performing art. Students will discuss primitive, classical and
contemporary dance and its interrelationship with cultural developments and other art forms.
Note: This course does not satisfy the PHED/DANC activity core requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able
to do the following:
1. Use effective oral, written, and/or visual means to communicate an informed personal reaction
to socially/culturally/historically/aesthetically relevant works of art within the dance discipline.

2. Demonstrate critical thinking by correlating a choreographic or performative work with the style
period from which it originates. (Critical Thinking)
3. Recognize essential terminology relevant to the dance genre, choreographers and artistic
contributors of a stylistic period. (Communication Skills)
4. Synthesize different points of view while working effectively as part of a team. (Teamwork)
5. Illustrate and contrast how regional, national, and/or global traditions in dance have been used
to reflect a social value or civic movement. (Social Responsibility)
6. Describe theatre terminology, lighting design and essential responsibilities required for a dance
concert production.
7. Identify dance education and career opportunities for the dance artist, educator and scholar.
8. Understand the value of dance as a lifetime fitness activity
